I am not an Oklahoma fan but this was an incredible ending and win for the Sooners! I can still remember watching this game on a Saturday afternoon when I was in high school.
Me too, a junior in high school at the time. Great game. Ohio St should probably have won. But I loved watching the Sooner wishbone in action, with Lott and Billy Sims.Fun memories
That offsides penalty on Ohio St with 2:59 left on 4th down cost the Buckeyes the game. Too bad , because they had stopped them short of the first down. Would have been game over
Was at this game, September of 1977, freshman at OSU. The wind gusted so strong, the good year blimp left the stadium area. Very physical game, took a lot out of both teams that season. Bucks season opener that year was a 10 to zero win over miami of florida.
I watched this on tv as well and I recall the OU kicker taunting the crowd during the OSU time out that was to “ice” him. Crowd chanting Block that kick and he had his helmet off egging them on. Great big balls. Didn’t see that in this version.
@Crfrd80 pac ten f 🏈 conference had bunch of passing offense teams, ever hear of Don Air Correll, NFL football coach threw the air out the 🏈 ,, problem with wishbone offense, still had to defend a complex passing attack
I remember all these oldies of OU Sooner Football. Steve Davis . My favorite player .. but he's Dead and Gone now because of the plane accident he had in Illinois also with others. Rest in Piece Steve Davis .
In remberance of Tom Blinco, #29 freshman inside linebacker who stepped in for Tom Consteau who was injured in this game. Tom played for my high football team in 1975 and 1976 (Lewiston Porter) and played both ways. He was awarded for being the best football player in Western In 1976. However, it is with great sadness that I have been informed of his passing at age 64 last week on March 21st 2022
Stop embarrassing yourself, OSU didn't have their starting center and lost their best defensive player early with a shoulder separation. Neither of these teams were great, as they both showed on New Year's night in Bowl games when they both got destroyed.
@@jackprecip5389 OU lost three NFL running backs and a quarterback that could outrun any one on OSU's team. The bowl games at the end of the year had nothing to do with this game. Stop embarrassing yourself. Woody could not catch any of OU"s players to sucker punch them either. Besides, it was Big Ten tradition for that time to get beat by the speed of the west coast teams in the Rose Bowl. It was not until the late eighties that the Pac Ten started having champs that would lose to the Big slow Ten on occasion.
Next to the last season in the Woody Hayes era. No doubt this game was a test to his anger management which would cause his demise a little more than a year later. This year they would later lose to their rival Michigan 14-6 and were pummeled in the Sugar Bowl by Alabama 35-6. I think that was the game Woody punched a cameraman. Uwe Von Schamann went on to play for the Miami Dolphins for six seasons. His last game was in their Super Bowl loss to the 49ers. Ron Springs fared decently with the Dallas Cowboys.
I think the 1985 OU vs Nebraska game might beat this one...OU had Spencer Tillman, Lydell Carr, Patrick Collins, Leon Perry and Anthony Stafford. NU had Doug DuBose and Tom Rathman. Of course Keith Jackson lead both teams in rushing as he rushed for 138 yards on just 3 carries! Oh, and Jamelle Hollieway wasn't a bad rusher either that day.
Interesting that each team's momentum shifted with the wind direction. This was a classic college football game. One year before Billy Sims won the Heisman, and he was flashing greatness. Woody Hayes was one year from retirement. How many All-Americans suited up and were on the field that day?
Yeah…everyone watching should really take a close look at that, maybe starting just a couple seconds earlier than your time stamp. Just watch. This guy…this coach…Woody Hayes…WASN’T a great coach…or even a good man. He. Was. A. Prick. To wit: the following year at the ‘78 Gator Bowl against Clemson “Woody Hayes grabbed the back of Clemson player Charlie Bauman’s jersey, wound up and punched him in the chest, just below the neck. Bauman looked over at the Old Man like he might have looked at a poodle nipping at his pants. Bauman was in full pads and a helmet; Hayes was in a windbreaker and a black cap, flailing at him. Bauman didn’t strike back. He didn’t even push Hayes away. He just retreated toward his teammates on the field as Hayes kept grabbing at him. Clemson players ran over to the sideline; Ohio State players scuffled with them. One of Woody’s captains, Byron Cato, pulled him away.” Class act indeed.
@@patricksweeney1924 Woody was a great coach and a great man.Sure he made mistakes.Still he won 3 consensus National Championships and lasted 28 years in a program not known for job security. He did a lot of good on and off the field.
At 3:00 about Billy Sims, he turned 22 years old a few days before this game as only a sophomore. Herschel Walker was 20 years old when he completed his football career at Georgia.
Gee! It is unusual to watch an Oklahoma football game without hearing the constant droning of the "Boomer Sooner" fight song being played by the OU band.
Watching this and other 1970s games with asymmetrical running teams like Alabama, Ohio St and Oklahoma you can see that none of them when faced with truly great balanced teams would rarely win - 1970 and 1971 Huskers, 1972, 72 and 78 Trojans and 1973 and 1977 Irish all ate the lunch of their running (wishbone, 3 yards and cloud of dust, etc.) opponents
good point !! I am now 56 and remember well....Billy Sims, Elvis Peacock & Kenny King and the next year the late great Overstreet with Lott at QB , They were AWESOME { 1977-79}
The running teams won more national titles in the 70's than the "balanced" teams. bear Bryant went from passing to running the wishbone and beat USC in LA too. The Huskers ran over 80% of the time all the way until Osborne retired. People only remember Miami beating the running teams in the 80's. One of Jimmy Johnson's assistants said the reason they did so well against the option teams was cause Jimmy was a former d line coach at OU and knew all of the line calls and tendencies.
@@Mr.56Goldtop The 71 OU o line was the fastest off of the ball that I ever saw and one was of the finest units ever. But what put OU at the top was their backs and receivers could block well too.

Loved these clash of titans between 2 power house teams. This was an all time classic.
Got my vote 🗳, woody Hayes & Barry Switzer wishbone offense & Billy Sims 1970s college 🏈
I *LOVE* watching these old games! _Especially the ones where a team 'steals' the win from ohio state!_

That game was wild. I was born 1975. I never knew how great the games were in the 70s. Built tougher in the 60,s 70s 80s.

Love 1970s college football
College football in 70's had some of the best games & styles of play - the wishbone, I-formation, etc. More emphasis on the run, not as much passing.
