UCLA beat #1 ranked Ohio St.just hours prior to this game in the Rose bowl 23-10• so this game became the National championship game. The 10-10 tie in 1973 between Michigan & Ohio St and the controversy that erupted with the B10 commissioner's vote forced the B10 to finally allow more than just the league champion to go to a bowl game.
Starting in the 80's with the proliferation of bowl games 🗑 teams with barley 6 wins make bowls, but back in this era 1975 with only a dozen or so bowl games you had to be good.

I agree. I like the playoff but it's reduced the bowl games that are not part of the playoff to meaningless status. So much so players are now skipping them to help their draft chances.

Karl Baldischwiler is from my hometown (so is the longtime MLB Manager Ron Gardenhire), Okmulgee Oklahoma. I remember pickup Football games (I think we played Football every day that we didn't have School, or a School Activity....rain, sleet, snow or sunshine....freezing or boiling hot it didn't matter lol) down our street and Karl would be involved in some of them with us. He was a gentle giant....until he got pissed off lmao. He had a nice 9 year NFL career with the dreadful Lions (5 yrs) and the Baltimore/Indianapolis Colts (4 yrs). Unfortunately he didn't get to open holes for the legend Barry Sanders, he was already out of the League by the time Sanders arrived in Detroit. He's a Lead Engineer for a Civil Engineering Firm in OKC so....he either missed out on the multi-millions players make now or, he made his millions and still wanted to work. Hell, he's just 65....however, that makes me 60 so, in my eyes 65 is still young lol.

I do have a recollection of this game because I distinctly recall noticing that Michigan wore the all white uniforms and had not seen that before as they always wore the maize (yellow) color pants. Maybe that was only for the '75 season..?? Everything back then just seemed better and there was a wonderful simplicity to it all, if that makes any sense. The announcers were far better over the ones used today who are mostly clowns. Without sounding overly nostalgic even the commercials back then were better..

    • @stephaniegormley9982

Michigan losing bowl games was almost like watching the hands on a clock. A supposedly national elite program that came up short under Schembechler. To be fair, Ohio State was lilliputian on many new year's days as well.

When did Oklahoma’s probation end as well as the TV ban. OU had been on for probation and had served a two year bowl ban and a TV ban as well. The TV ban included the 1975 season. I’m going to guess this game didn’t count under the TV ban as the Bowl Games were not part of the NCAA TV Contract(and never were)

I love watching the antics of the refs back in those days. The side judges are actually lined up just outside the players on each end, in direct line of the play. You will often see the referee running backwards to get out of the way of the play, and expected to make calls while running full speed. Compare that to today’s official who calmly stand on the sidelines, out of the path of the play, taking measured steps to either side to get a better angle to make the proper call.
And referees run and skip and hop and jump in the air, making excited gestures that are supposed to be officiating mechanics.
    These guys crack me up.
If a referee acted like this in today’s game, they couldn’t get hired to call a 3rd grade B-team game at the local YMCA Flagg football game. But back then, these were the accepted mechanics, and these guys were at the top of their profession.
    Honest
Y though, I laughed at them back then too. And that laughter once got me a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty, which culminated with a royal ass-chewing by my coach, followed by a week of extra running. Later that year, my senior year, my coach admitted to me that he also thought they looked goofy. 😂

    • @bloqk16
      @bloqk16 ปีที่แล้ว

With you pointing out about the position of the refs in the game . . . it reminded me back in the 1980s when John Madden had a five-minute radio segment [via phone] with Gene Nelson at KYA, San Francisco; where one of those segments had Madden pointing out that the Bill Walsh coached NFL 49ers of that time would design offensive passing plays where the refs' positions on the field would be used to the offense's advantage.

    2-7 in Rose bowls.
This ended up being the National championship game,#1 Ohio st. got their ass kicked by UCLA earlier}had Michigan won they would of been voted NC (lost 14-6)
Bo hated to pass until Anthony Carter #1 came came along.

He began to throw a LITTLE more when Rick Leach gained more experience. Anthony Carter did help open the offense up some but Bo always remained a run first coach as he HATED to put his defense in a bad spot.
