Interesting that Queen Elizabeth had her mother and paternal grandmother, who were each outstanding queens, as guiding lights to help her on her way to becoming one of the greatest herself.
Her mother and grandmother were consorts not reigning in their own right. However, Hitler called Queen Elizabeth the most dangenerous women in Europe. She did a remarkable job backing up her husband King George.
Queen Elizabeth is exactly like Queen Mary. Hardworking, disciplined and dutiful.
Queen Elizabeth learned a lot from her father also. She dearly loved her father and his death was a deep shock to her.
they were Queen Consorts, our Queen is a Queen regnant, totally different roles
they couldn't guided her in her role as Monarch

It's so reassuring to see the format of the State funerals are the same. They are done with all the pomp and ceremony that only Britain can do. I have found all the royal funerals to be incredibly moving.

I find it hilarious that Queen Mary would send flowers from her vase to thank people for their "gifts" which she stole. She was a snob, cheap and a very entitled person.. Royal yes, but she had a low class attitude when it came to dealing with others, that's how Narcissist behave.
I am pro royal and in these days such respect. Funerals are never good but the send offs like these are a fitting goodbye.
March 31, 1953
@gdmstudying Yes you are right. This is not the funeral. which happened on the 31st. but the procession to the lying in state at Westminster. She died on the 24th so I doubt this occurred on th same day, but I get your point. All this is historical minutia but it amazes me that the lazy dimwits who post this material for British Movietone can't be bothered with looking up basic info.
From what I had read, Queen Mary has insisted that Elizabeth's coronation go on as scheduled.
Katheryne, you are correct. That was one of her utmost wishes, that her passing would not delay her granddaughter's coronation.
Its depressing to realize she didn't make it to the coronation... So close.. :"
That is correct. She died in March, 1953, and she insisted that the coronation, set for June, 1953, go on as scheduled. As a practical matter, though, it would have been extremely difficult to reschedule the coronation, given the advance planning, travel schedules for people from all over the world, etc.
Katheryne Koelker yes she did
It was hinted in a documentary that she was instrumental in making sure her death would not affect the coronation - how she did that was not gone in to but left to the imagination
Queen Mary was so regal...a true Queen. If you are not going to play it straight then what's the point? Queen Mary knew this by instinct...she was revered. People were in awe of her... Rightly so!!!

Marching with arms reversed must be very difficult as the torso is twisted with one arm behind the back holding the barrel/shaft of the gun/sword.
I wonder how many people know the difference between a State funeral and a Ceremonial funeral.
State funeral - the most visible difference is that the gun carriage is drawn by members of the Royal Navy, on foot.
Ceremonial funeral - the gun carriage is drawn by horses.
In addition - State funeral - the actual ceremony is held in King George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Ceremonial funeral - the ceremony is held at Westminster Abbey.
The burial of members of the Royal Family is usually at Windsor Castle.
Examples - State funerals - King George V and King George VI
Ceremonial funerals - Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth (wife of King George VI), Diana, Princess of Wales, Sir Winston Churchill, Baroness Margaret Thatcher.
Exceptions to the above were - Duke of Windsor (his funeral was a mixture of state and ceremonial), Duchess of Windsor and Princess Margaret - private ceremonies in King George’s Chapel, Windsor and burials there.
Also - there may be a period of lying in state in Westminster Hall -
Done for - George V, George VI, Duke of Windsor, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth (wife of George VI) and Winston Churchill.
Not done done for Diana, Margaret, Duchess of Windsor or Baroness Thatcher,
Churchill had a state funeral. The Queen made an exception for him, given his role in history.
Sir Churchill and Baroness Thatcher had their services at St Paul’s Cathedral.
Virginia Fry Churchill was given a state funeral and The Duke of Windsor's wasn't given a mixture of state and ceremonial, there is no such thing as a mixture of both
his lying in state was at Windsor Castle and his funeral service was at St George's Chapel
and was buried at the Frogmore Burial Ground

what would she think of the Royals today there falling apart in front of our eyes
Well her son (known for having kinky three ways with Nazi's) ditched his crown & country for a slapper. So I suspect she'd think todays Royals are doing rather well.
when our queen goes I think the Royal Family will change a lot
I think William will do a fantastic job, he's gotten loyalty and duty from his grandmother, compassion from his mother, and his wife has helped him be a good father & husband.
I think William and Kate will do a great Job But we will see a much smaller Royal Family doing public duties If you look at the Queens Grandchildren few do public duties Now Edward and Ann and that's it the Young members don't want to do a lot from what I can see Times are changing and the Royals will change a lot after the queen goes
@@Jeffybonbon I think so too, from my pre retirement service at Buckingham Palace. The Prince of Wales is planning to make the Royal Family smaller and more economical. He would prefer to stay at Clarence House and use Buckingham Palace the way that most of the European monarchs use their big palaces, just as the office. Probably a good idea. Even though the monarchy is self funded, it is still subject to often unfriendly scrutiny. The European monarchies seem to employ fewer people. The Danish Royal Household is only about 100 people. There are about 360 at Buckingham Palace.
Old times can seem so odd

They say she was quite a collector. People would hide their most favoured posessions before she came to visit, because if she liked something, she wouldn't leave till you gave it to her. O6t was also said that talking to her felt like talking to St. Paul's cathedral
The St. Paul's comment is accurate. Yes, she was a collector, often of jade, which was sent to her by a dealer in India, and for which she paid. She also tried to get back pieces that had been in the Royal Collection. The stories about her demanding pieces have no basis in fact. There is no documented evidence of any of those stories. She would certainly accept gifts, but demanding would be against her nature. She would have seen it as vulgar and demeaning.
@@mscott3918 My understanding is that it was more passive than that. She'd express a like for something, then not leave till she was offered it. Demanding something would have indeed been vulgar. It was more about giving someone ample opportunity to show their generosity. Lol
@@wfcoaker1398 She did certainly admire things, saying that she was caressing them with her eyes. But the only things she tried to get, and she did offer to pay, was things that had been in the Royal Collection, and left for some reason. Quite often it was a chair from a set that Queen Victoria had allowed one of her children to take when they married, things like that. I have known a few people who knew her well, including my mother, who was her God daughter. One antique dealer remembered her from when he started in the family business in the 1930s. I knew him in the 1980s, and he remembered her with great affection. He also said that she wasn't demanding or expecting things to be given to her. I think it's one of those myths that spring up around people. She is one of the people that I would love to have met, but she died 3 years before I was born. My mother told me quite a few stories about her. She called my mother to Marlborough House before my parents married, gave her a lecture on the the virtues of marriage and what a good wife should be. She then handed her a box of jewellery as a wedding gift. I inherited it, along with the rest of my mother's estate 10 years ago. A beautiful tiara, necklace, bracelet and earrings. In the documentary about "Prince John The Windsor's tragic secret" she and her husband were labeled as deeply dysfunctionel parents. I believe they were - even the time considered.
The pre WW2 world was a very different place.
The regime that the Duke of Windsor, his sister and brothers were raised under was the norm in other aristocratic houses at that time.
They failed utterly as parents, but succeeded as grandparents. The king and queen spoiled their granddaughter, princess Elizabeth. It was said that the icy heart of Queen Mary melted in Elizabeth's presence.
I believe, in a similar context, that QEQM discovered in later life she had 2 completely unknown cousins who had spent their entire lives in, what was then known as, a “home for incurables” due to mental ability issues.
The past is a different country, they do things differently there.
