Im always amazed at how humble Ella Fitzgerald appeared to be about her talent. She didnt "big" herself up or act like a superstar. Yet she was greater than all of those who do. How times change!
She was America’s treasure, that’s true of course. But I want to add : she was the entire world’s darling. I am Canadian, I live in Europe and I can assure you that still today, in 2021, many people know and cherish Miss Ella Fitzgerald !!! We can hear this lady singing all her beautiful songs on radios. And televisions are still having programs about her life and career, that’s comforting. We don’t forget her. She still the Star of the jazz in 2021 !
Man...i was already crying watching Ella still shining at the end of her life. But maaaaan.. When they showed Esther Rolle holding back tears then WHITNEY...I lost it. Sobbing like a mug.
I was very moved by Ella's performance.(to tears) What a gem this whole clip is. Nancy Wilson and Al Jarreau were fantastic!........and words can not express how much I love and admire Ella Fitzgerald! They don't make em' like those 3 any more!
The fabulous Nancy Wilson & Al Jarreau (sing Ella's signature song) just proved these 3 could sing ANYTHING. Can you imagine what heaven must sound like with all this talent. RIPEllaNancyAl 🎼🎼🎼💖💖💖
Ella started out at a young age at my Grandfather`s Jazz lounge in Boston. It was called Eddie Levine`s Lounge. Also the High Hat Restaurant in Boston. I was about 6 years old when I had dinner with Ella!
I thought that Ella had started out in Harlem clubs? Did she PERHAPS first tour the Boston area at your grandfather's place? What year/s? Oldtime friends/co-workers of mine saw her the first week or so that she sang with Chick Webb at the Savoy in Harlem..think that was . early 1937. By January 1938 Ella, I believe, was already doing some singing with Benny Goodman. (snippets of long ago conversations)
al Jarreau is my favorite male artist. I remember crying so bad when hearing of his passing n I never cry for artists. RIP Mr Al Jarreau. U r sorely missed
I've watched this clip probably dozens of times and it always makes me happy/sad/grateful. We have now lost Ella, Al and Nancy. What a gift to the world they were and are.
This is why I LOVE TH-cam! All 3 of them are gone now but we can all have the opportunity to see great performances and moments like this over and over and over again!
I cried too b/c Ms. Ella was the greatest. Even before the camera showed Whitney, I thought of her and said that she should be here still. Just like Ella, it would have been great if we could have seen Whitney in her later years singing beautifully still. For all those reasons, I cried.
I cried too. Ella was my mom's favorite singer, and she became one of my favorites too. I was amazed how Ella voice's was as strong and often stronger in second half of her career, and I often thought that Whitney with her rare talent and super strong voice would follow Ella in that regard. When Whitney had her difficulties, I kind of mourned the partial loss of her voice skills and said I wish she would be more like Ella. I selfishly wanted her world-topping voice / talent to go on for another twenty years. Now I feel sort of terrible that I was rooting more for her voice and stage presence and not as much for Whitney the person. I am so sorry she did not have more happiness. My roommate who had bought everything she ever did, was defending her even in her more difficult times. He said her voice will return, and that no singer could ever keep their voice in top shape as they got older anyway. I always brought up Ella and her fabulous voice as she aged. He, the silly guy did not seem to know much beyond Motown, Pop, Disco and dance, and would say "Who is Ella?"" Then I'd have to remind him of the variety shows she often guest-starred in the 60's and 70's when we were kids, and sing A-Tisket, A-Tasket. My roommate never gave up on Whitney, always talked about the 12 steps and said she could recover. He would say, " I hope she makes it" I would think; Oh she will be alright, she has the resources to get help, and kind of be judging her for messing up her gift. Now all I do when I think of Whitney is pray that she is happy and miss her, not so much her greatness, but she herself, that beautiful soul and spunky, sparkly girl / lady / woman. And ache for her daughter. I will always love both Ella and Whitney.
This was me and my grandfather's song. I remember so clearly this memory. My grandfather and I were on the porch and I was sitting on the bench with my grandfather with the laptop. I pulled up this song just to listen to it and my grandfather told me "You are the sunshine of my life". I miss my grandfather so much. He passed away at 1:30 p.m. today. I miss him so much. R.I.P Papa I love you forever. You are the sunshine of my life. Forever and Always.
So much Black Excellence, they're gone 2 glory now. the incomporable Ms. Nancy Wilson and Mr. AL Jarrau. Class Acts 4 sure and of course the beautiful Ms. Ella Fitzgerald. They are all American Treasures. Rest in Peace beautiful people
Three of the baddest musicians, vocalists, entertainers to ever walk the earth. When I tell you that Heaven is constantly jammin'! I'm talkin' bout all day and night.
Ella sounded so good there. I just closed my eyes and it was like I was listening to her when she was still in her prime years. Oh I just love Ella's music and performances.
Love these superb performers, not just “singers” but their impeccable performances, & connection to their audience are overwhelmingly delightful. 🌹🌺🥰 Leilani
I started crying to see Ms. Ella, she was sooo humble. She was a beast! yet she was so very humble. She is amazing and my eyes just welled with tears. She had so much swing so much rhythm she was truly and still is a legend. I love you Miss Ella, we are so blessed to have had you for a while.
I’m grinning watching all those mega stars watching Ella like kids in a candy shop. Knowing how lucky they are to be in her presence for just one song and the reverence exuding from them is so touching! Especially from Al Jarreau and Nancy Wilson masters of masters themselves! Man! And to think I had the same experience for even 3 songs, when in Ella’s Devine presence ( coz I think people like her and Piaf and Louis are Demi-gods) one feels like touches by an angel and traveling light years in a moment! Sounds corny but it’s the best way I can describe how life altering a song can be, from a Giant!

I will never forget a comment from her i read many years ago. She was asked her age and she freely gave it. When asked why she freely gave it when many are resistant to give their age, she replied, " I've Earned These Years ". Man, that comment has stayed with me since. Rest in Peace, Ms. Nancy Wilson, you have truly earned it.
The Queen of Jazz....Ms.Ella Fitzgerald!...Nobody does it better!...Even n her old age,She was a MEGA BEAST!...Truly AMAZING...Christ gave a wonderful gift to music ...especially when He gave us Ms.Fitzgerald!..Nancy Wilson and Al Jarreau did a lovely job!
All are a master class. But I was raised that a "gem" can come from any age, but MOST DEFINITELY pay attention to a "young pearl that stays one til the end, because they gleam in different ways, NEVER throw it away". Ella, WOW 😳😳...can barely see & walk, & hit notes, runs, & range with clarity that was sight to hear, and a sound to see. Wow! What a treat. Al Jarreau and Nancy Wilson are the perfect singers to give tribute to ALLA FITZGERALD, THE STYLIST. RIP Ms. Fitzgerald, and Al Jarreau.
Rachel Jordan I’m watching this, today, on December 14, 2018 and Nancy Wilson’s passing has just been announced. She will be missed. February 20, 1937 - December 13, 2018
I remember watching this tribute when it aired originally on TV. I had never heard of Nancy Wilson so when Moses Gunn and Irene Cara introduce her and Al Jarreau, I did not remember the name Nancy Wilson. All I remembered was The VOICE. The second time I heard that voice was on The Cosby Show when Nancy Wilson sang as Denice's mother-in-law. From then on, I have been in love with Mrs. Wilson's music. Thank you Nancy for sharing your gift!!! Thank you Mr. Cosby for featuring Nancy Wilson on your show. Because of you, I found her again!
Wow! What a treat! Beautiful singing by the mother of scat-hum herself!!!!!! The outstanding, honorable, and amazing Ella Fitzgerald!!!!! [because of the date of this event, there are also many great ones in the audience like Esther Rolle aka Florida Evans from "Good Times", may she Rest In Peace as well].
OMG, this is around the time I saw her in Austin TX. She performed at a small college auditorium...Joe Pass opened for her, quietly bringing the crowd to silent attention. Then she walks out, just like on the video and sang for almost 90 minutes. My glimpse of the divine. A soul I still listen to whenever I need a smile. Bless you Ella you are still sunshine in my life
My friend met her in an airport and gushed with love and admiration. After a while she sighed and said “Thank you, but it’s is the only thing I know how to do!”
Wow! Was that Brock Peters an ICON and Irene Cara? Fancy Ms. Nancy Wison and Al Jarreau are such jazz stylists extraordinare and bless Ella Fitzgerald. May they alll RIP😔
I saw NANCY and ELLA in concert..to see vocalists of this calibre live.was a true magical experience..THE CONCERTS HAVE STAYED IN MY MEMORY ...THANK YOU..MAY THEY BOTH RIP...THANK YOU FOR THE MUSIC. XX
I was lucky enough and old enough to see Ella perform live in LA and Vegas. She was even better live than on record. And Nancy in this clip is amazing and so is Al. What a tribute. I know Ella was touched. You can see by my email address who my favorite females singers are and, dear Lord, I miss them so much but the legacy they have left will live forever.
two of our great talents honoring one of our great talent. we will never see the likes of these great talented people again. r.i.p. ella, al, and nancy.

Her voice didn't weaken at all with age! Just incredible!
I agree her later PABLO recordings for NORMAN GRANZ are my favourite especially the 70s album ELLA AND OSCAR
Yes, Ms. Ella's voice stayed fabu!
Ella's vocal resources had been greatly diminished, but her ability to make great music was never compromised.
Stevie’s voice stands the test of time as well.
