  • We all have that one hen. A hen who is glued to her nest for weeks and pecks you anytime you try to collect eggs from the nesting boxes. Here's how I put my broody hen to work, how I've broken broodiness in the past and even how and why you might want to induce broodiness!

Ha, I just had a broody hatch out 6 eggs for me yesterday and this shows up in my feed. I had 11 in the incubator and gave her back her own eggs when she went broody about 6-7 days ago. All 11 hatched, only lost one back on day 6 due to quit. I'm kind of lucky with this hen, as she won't leave the nest until all chicks emerge or 72 hours -whichever comes first. Not even sure how she knows to do that but it's amazing. I bring her food and a little water though, as I fear for her health in the FL heat. I'm going to wait a few days and then see if she's up to fostering the 5 I hatched in the incubator as well. She has fostered in the last, so hopeful.
