I Want More Chickens, So I Built TWO Chick Brooders of My Own (Rudimentary) Design

  • With 40 cornish cross chicks arriving the next day, I needed to build a brooder fast! I had already built one to fit in our garage storage rack for my turkeys so this went a little faster and smoother. I'm definitely no expert, but I'm happy I could design and build my own brooder to house my upcoming poultry orders.

Thanks! It's really fun to open the garage door off the kitchen and see them all together!

Good job on the brooder. You give me hope one day I can actually build something

Thank you! I bet you can! It's worth a shot to get what you want, at a fraction of the price of someone else building it for you :)

do the turkey chicks not need a heat lamp? Those brooders are awesome. We are in the process of building a brooder from plywood that slides together at the corners so we don't have any screws or nails to mess with on the box part. It also breaks down easily and can be stored away til I get chick fever again. LOL Got the design from The Mindful Homestead channel. It would have to be modified for a shelf set up like yours so I think your design is better suited for shelving.

I have a coop heating plate in the turkey brooder, but I also found that the heaters from below them actually heat their ground. The shavings are 85 degrees right above the heat lamps below. So that's kind of cool! I do like the idea of the brooder that breaks down. Good luck with building yours and enjoy your chicks!

Great job. I also cut down 2x4, have to use table saw. Kudos to you 👏

Thanks! We don't have a table saw, so half the fun is figuring out how to use what you have :)

Love the video and the brooder look great! Please Don’t use a heat lamp! The fire hazard is so high. I have known of two of my friends who lost all their chickens and coop due to a fire😉

Use common sense and secure it, they work fine
