DIY Chickens: What to do with a Broody Hen?

- Should you allow a hen to be broody or do you try to break her of it. If you choose to try and break a hen of being broody, then is their a right way vs a wrong way of doing it.
In this video I share some of the experiences and insights I have gathered over the past few years of keeping backyard chickens.
Plus I share some insights into letting a hen be broody and allowing her to sit on a few eggs.
Our lady is at day 21 and we are eagerly awaiting the results of her hard work.

Wow...your right...I closed off access to the nest box, and sat her in cold water for 5 minutes....what a difference...now she is out in the run eating with the rest of the hens

My hen is broody and we don't have a rooster so we asked our friend cause they have a rooster to give us some fertilized eggs so I hope that's good xD
Last summer (we are in New Zealand, so that was almost 12 months ago) our son put about a dozen fertilised eggs under two broody hens. From those we got 4 chickens. Unfortunately cats got 2 of them while they were small, but we still have 2 that are now laying well. We got the fertilised eggs from the local feed shop.

Sometimes giving them a nest box that has a wire floor that way air circulates under her lowering that temperature
My broody chicken love to swing on the tire swing with me when she is broody it keeps the chicken happy but they she goes back. Ugh but cute!! 🌸🐓💕💞❣🐓

That was really helpful thank you my hen is Brody since yesterday and she was sitting on her egg and the egg off her sister.. they are little bantams and the rooster is a Mille Fleur so I am very excited.. we will have to separate her from the others so she can breathe better but in the afternoon I will give her the chance to free run with her flock..
I have one hen and one hen only that goes broody regularly... So we called her Brody!!!! I found the best way to break her brooding, was to simply continuously remove her from the box. Sooner or later she gets the message and stops.
Have you noticed although, that brooding hens get picked on?
My chicken ran under the trailer and came out a couple of weeks with a flock numbering up to 12. Note I didn't go down there cause I thought she was dead and yes I do have a rooster

Mine growls and pecks so dang hard🥺
She leaves them every couple days to forage, poop and drink but today she left her clutch and only moved a couple eggs under her😟

great info, my chicken is broody but does not stay in coop?? stopped laying eggs for 3 weeks
I let my hen lay eggs and then take them until we have 10-12 eggs then we put it back to the nest box for her to go broody. When she lays the egg do you take them or just leave them until the chicken has a lot and goes broody. Cause i've been taking it and waiting her to go broody and snuck it in idk if thats good or not someone please help me
when you separated the broody hen into the A frame cage, did u provide a roosting bar only but no nest box?
+KikiB1121 If I am separating a broody hen and sticking her in the A frame that means I do NOT want her to be broody. Providing a nest box would merely negate the reason I am separating her in the first place. She would sit in the nest box and continue being broody. If she is broody then she isn't laying eggs anyway. Hope this helps.

you have different chicken breeds, dont they come out cross mixes if they breed?

A friend of mine has that same breed of chicken...and MAN does that rooster make things painful for anyone who enters the backyard!
+Steve Collins Some roosters can be pretty aggressive for sure.
I have a Buff rooster also. He is like my pet dog, will follow me around and sit on my lap. Just dont mess with his girls though.
I had a large white rooster and he was a sweetheart listened to me like a dog
Idk why but to me it sounds like when a humans in the mood they take cold showers. Ik it's different bc the mama thinks she's protecting and taking care of her babies. We do it bc we feel some type of way.
Interesting ...what if you took one of those little blue ice plastic blocks if not frozen at least very cold? Seems like it logically might do the same thing without getting henny penny all "mad as a wet hen" ...thoughts?
btw should you ever feed and water a broody hen sitting on eggs you want her to? Cause you said a hen will sit until they DIE if eggs are not fertile ... I am assuming they would die from lack of nourishment??
@@dougiequick1 dehydration is the bigger threat. They need to get up and go drink water.
You said that broody chicken gets rid of some of the eggs that are not viable... how does she get rid of the eggs?

The hen sells them by putting an add on craigslist.

Do you... uh... harvest the chickens themselves? Allowing afterwards a batch of eggs to be fertilized and born as the next flock?
+Adam R lol I like your delicate way of phrasing the question. No, we usually do not cull our egg layers. We raise a breed called Rainbow rangers specifically for meat production.
What breed is that mine is due Sunday and I don't know her kind is
The yellow bird is a Buff Orpinton breed. Their are several different varieties of Orpintons but the yellow or sometimes called "blonde" are Buffs. They go broody easily and make great mother hens. Very docile for the most part. Good breed to have if you have small children around.

so what's the difference between white eggs and tan/brownish eggs..and donu scramble the eggs or are they little chicks? never knew what a broody chicken was I never heard of a broody chicken learn something new everyday

Weve got a broody hen!! We have no rooster. She hasn't left her nest in days. Im concerned about her dying.
Get her off the nest box and do not allow her access back to it for a few days.
Female don't need a female to go broody
