outstanding work on your process. I do like your attention to detail.
Fantastic ,love your work and stones
Great video for sharing, I am learning so much. I just started RH this spring 2024. Just started hand polishing this last month 8/24 for the first time ever. I have only begun to get my toes wet in the world of Lap. Awesome work beautiful pieces.
Soon you will be celebrating 1000 subs. Great video today !! Opals are like magic
Thank you for commenting! I'm glad you enjoyed the video, nothing is quite as unique as opal.
Yay! one for the algorithm! (great work, too)
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed the video!
Have to give this a go. Really appreciate then info !
I got lost and couldn't get back in.... TH-cam has been acting funny lately. Love your channel... Just got a flex shaft dremel and really need to watch your videos... Thanks for sharing
Thanks for watching! I hope you get good results with your new dremel, it's always fun trying new things and getting the hold of a hobby.
I was thinking of using Obsidian on my doublets and for glue Star Bond, which We have been using for Doping.
I've got a crazy idea for you. I was just going through my fridge when I noticed that some of the fridge magnets I've got are just like triplets, the way they're made. I'm thinking that if you opened them and put in some opal flakes, you'd have triplets for fridge magnets.
That's so crazy it might just work lol. I might give that a shot sometime when i have the materials, sounds like a fun project!
First ones well done a lot of work in those and you got great results. I love that first one stunning colour. Also the moonstone addition very creative.Thank you for all the sun stones. Giving you shout out on my next vid which i just finished.
Thank you for commenting! I'm glad you liked the doublets as much as I did. I was a little nervous at first, but I'm happy with the way they turned out. I hope your sunstones turn out well, I wanted to give you a few different types to work to see how you like it. I'll definitely go check out your video soon, got the notification. thanks for the shout out aswell, that's really awesome and I really appreciate all your support 😀
Very Cool stones! Interesting/great video!
Thanks for watching! Glad you enjoyed the video!
You did very well for a first attempt 👌 gives life to stuff that sits in the “bits” jar for months 🙂 one small tip I give to avoid bubbling is just before you sandwich the colour to the backing, give the epoxy a quick lick with a blow torch. Literally 3-4 quick passes. It will draw any bubbles out of it
Thanks for watching and commenting! That's a super helpful tip! Next time I make some doublets I'm definitely going to give that a shot!
Good stuff. That tiny dremel blade, though. Gives the phase "roughin it" two meanings. I'm no different I use the 2" blades. Another great video.
Thanks for watching! I'm glad you enjoyed the video! I got the cutting bit not long ago but I've been loving it since I got it. It's nice to have something more course, and I like how easy it makes it to get a nice flat back.
nice work mate
I really enjoyed this one, I just cut my first cab last night, it's andamooka Matrix. It was tricky because I was holding the stone in one hand with the tool in the other one.
I have a lot of chips that are more flakes than chips, and I was wondering if they were possibly good enough for doublet material, but I think they're closer to triplet thickness.
I have been wondering about the slicing discs, I have a few flat grinding discs that are pretty rough, and I was wondering if I could use those cutting discs for grinding too, like you just did. So, that answers that question.
The more I play around with my dremmel, the more I appreciate what you are doing with yours.
I really like doublets and triplets, they're a bargain for all the time and work that goes into them, and they are all beautiful to look at.
I think that I would only want matrix and triplets for any rings I might wear, because they probably take a lot more of a bump to damage than other opals.
I hope you start making videos more often, I need the inspiration and examples of the end results. Kind of like the joy of painting videos get a lot of people motivated to try painting.
I was just thinking about painting a little canvas board black and sticking my flakes to it, like a doublet mosaic type of thing.
You know, I took all the host rock off of a huge water opal and it lost all of its flash. It looks like a chunk of amber coloured glass now. I got the idea that I could try smoking it, but I dried it too fast and it cracked all over. I have ground it down and have it back in the water now. I was still thinking about trying to smoke it, but now I am thinking about the doublets and the black backing. I wonder how it would look if I flattened the back of it and then painted it black? Maybe the flash would come back. It would be a lot easier than drying it and smoking it and.....I can just paint the back now, before I even flatten it. If it will work, I will know right away!
Thanks again for your inspiration!
I don't expect you to read all this, I talk too much and I have discovered that I write just about as much, sorry. 😊
Thanks for watching and commenting! When I first started with the dremel I would hold it in one hand and the stone in the other like roys rocks, but it can be frustrating, so that's why I clamped mine down, but it can be a bit shakey if it's not on tight. If you have some black stone that's smooth that isn't australian potch you can use that for backing if your desperate. Also you can just use black glass as a backing if you have it or got some from 53 frogs. As far as triplets, you can make a mosaic triplet if your pieces are really small and thin and those look cool, and you can find broken clear glass on the ground some places and take it home and use it as toppers for triplets if you don't want to break the glass yourself. I agree that I need to post more videos, It's just a busy time for me right now so I haven't had as much time to edit as I'd like. I've been working week on week off on a berry farm and me and the farm owner are going to be running a shop at a renaissance fair at the start of October so I've been spending any time I've had making stuff for the fair. But in late october- early November I hopefully will be able to get back on a regular posting schedule. And you totally can just paint the back of that opal, but I'd try holding it up to something black first just to make sure the colors will come out enough to make it worth it before you put in the effort.
Yeah its surprising how well doublets can look but its slightly depressing at the same time cause you want those SAME colours from a solid stone but finding those.... much harder to do..
It always feels good to get anything out of australian opal for me. I just love all the colors and any way I can make it work ill be happy. I've never really had a superb australian opal result yet, but either way I'm thankful for what I can get lol. Thanks for watching and commenting!
