      A point I would like to put here if I may. A long time ago, Australian mower manufacturer Victa built a mower designed to cut wet grass. They had an oval shaped disc, on which the blades were fitted, FOUR of them!! This disc was very weird to look at (my dad had one of these mowers, which was later passed to me). The disc had rectangular holes cut at equal spacing. The cut piece was not completely removed. It was bent up toward the deck side, & acted like a fan, to create vacuum under the mower, thus making the grass stand up to be cut by the blades. The engine was odd too. The starting assembly formed the top part of the crank case, & was sealed by a large neoprene "O" ring. This was called the "Power Torque" engine, & was a 2 stroke job. They rarely packed up.

      @@christophermarshall5765 Jacobson made one, a regular 2-cycle that had a cone shaped engine adapter under the deck that had 4 teeth off a sickle mower mounted on it by rivets in 1/4 intervals around the bottom of the cone. Don't think it had any lift but it cut.

    There isn't anything wrong with an economical, redneck fix at all! As long as it functions safely, you're good doing it.
    My dad was infamous for his redneck fixes lol. We had an old snapper self propelled mower from like 1988, and the cable from the lever on the handlebars to the pulley Assembly broke. So, whats dad do? He used a small metal chain off of a porch swing to connect it. And I'll have u know. The self propelled never broke again! It was an amazing fix, and was very durable!

After changing the oil and fixing the high speed issue, the mower runs great other than a little bit of sputtering once in a while. Likely from the spark plug. I filled the 'mulching holes' by the 3 support legs for the blade spindles full of resin on the opposed and painted it well so very few places for rust to start. My brother has one just like it in his shed next door , it has one of the best running engines I have ever seen
    But the self propell was the first problem it ever had and he had to fix one of the rear drive gears once , other than basic maintenance it is the only thing he has had to do to it, those wide wheels 😞 roll through the grass like butter
    On one of our other mowers it's deck had a problem similar to that ,I did a redneck fix on it by cutting out the rusty part and taking a piece of sheet metal and forming it to fit the space cutting it slightly larger than the hole thin drilling several holes in it and the deck and pop riveting it into place I used about 12 rivets spacing them close together,in don't have a welder so that was the only thing I could use to hold it in place fairly well in all the time we used none of the rivets ever came out so it worked for the that

    If the deck wasn’t rotted out I would have simply put a new “Z” bend on the end of the cable, nothing’s wrong with the cable itself and Z bends are only a couple bucks. I always keep a pack of them in my parts box and order more when they get low. As for the deck; no way, no how, nope. I see a deck rotted out like that and I won’t touch the mower for any repair, too much of a liability risk. Parts donor and deck gets scrapped. Considering that Lawn Boy is a Toro brand and has been since 1990 or so, I don't think there's any "homage" to Toro's personal pace system here. It is Personal Pace under a different name. My interest is in 2 cycle Lawn Boys and I know little about the 4 cycles, but back in the late 90s/early 2000s there were two different high end two strokes sold along side each other with different drive systems. The 10525 had the Lawn Boy 3 speed transmission, and the 10550 which had the "Easy Stride" system-identical to the Personal Pace models of the same age. Somewhere in my stack of files I have a combined Lawn-Boy/Toro self propelled drive service manual that covers the Lawn Boy single speed, Lawn Boy 3 speed, and the Personal Pace/Easy Stride/Sense-a-Speed. The latter are all in same section of the book.

    I save Z bends from cables that have broken. I keep about 5" of wire at the end (or as much as I can salvage) and will simply crimp them together to repair a cable - essentially, a free repair because the sleeves are super cheap. Toro/Lawn Boy are notorious for the self propel Z bends breaking for some reason. Since the cable is adjustable on those, there's a bit more leeway in the repair if you're a bit short/long compared to the original.
    As for the deck.....I'm thinking a thin piece of sheet metal could be welded to it - a bit of work, though, esp given the contour of the top of the deck. JB Weld does make "steel weld" in a stick/putty form. Would take a bit to repair this, and some time, but can't be any worse than duct tape. Either way, sounds like the owner is on borrowed time, and just wants to keep it going until it's finally beyond repair.

    If I were going to the headache to fix that deck. I would have insisted on getting a new cable. It's one thing to do a redneck fix if you just are going to get a new mower, but if you plan on continuing using it for a considerable length of time (more than a mow or two) I'll just get a new cable.

    Totally understand helping somebody out with their old mower, but any push mower with a rusted out deck like that becomes a parts mower for a better deck and dead engine and totally not worth the possible liabilities to resale. No, I would have patched the cable again for them since this mower is getting close to heading to the “last quarter acre in the sky” just to help them out, but for a nicer resale mower, I would have replaced the cable with, at least, a good used one.

    If the customer doesn't want a cable then not much else you can do. As for the deck though i just wouldn't do anything to it unless the the hole gets fixed. I don't normally have time to screw around cutting it out and welding bits in so i don't normally entertain something like that.

    I think as long as a "redneck fix" works and isn't going to cause any further harm to the machine or hurt anyone, then it is fine. If it were something like an air filter or a blade adapter which could damage the machine, or hurt someone then it is nolonger okay. There is no reason in spending money on something like this when you could get a couple more years out of a free fix that worst case scenario has to be fixed again.

    Redneck fix works. As for the deck, I'd put the engine on a good deck. Trying to weld that one might create a big headache, because the immediate surrounding metal is most likely too thin to do satisfactory welding.

    • @TKC_
      @TKC_ ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HomeGaragechannel I actually use files a lot for machining stuff so am good with a file. I would just angle the file and go almost straight down the blade so no hands get near it. Try a nice thick sharp lathe file (for something nicer then a mower blade), they are very nice and remove a lot of material pretty quick. This is all hypothetical I suppose because I either use an angle grinder or bench grinder to make it go fast. For a mower blade with the rocks I hit it would take forever to file all that material off…
