As a life long Brian Winters fan and collector, this game has been on my holy grail list. I remember watching this game on local Milwaukee TV with my dad. What a shootout between Winters and Gervin.
I can hardly believe this game isn't more famous. Two teams playing amazing offense and defense, heroes all over the place, quite a few players approaching 30 points and of course a few reaching over that. Brian Winters and George Gervin in particular had monster games. Best I've ever seen from Winters. Gervin played amazingly considered how well the Bucks shut him down in the later part of the first period and especially the second period. Gervin's long-range attacks in the the last two OT's really punished the Bucks. I can't recall ever seeing two more evenly matched teams. What a thriller.
I was actually at this game! I lived in Corpus Christi at the time and it was the first Spurs game I ever went to! I remember bragging to everyone for years that I went to the highest scoring NBA game in history. Thank you so much for for posting this!
Bob Lanier, Moses Malone, Patrick Ewing-probably the three best double, triple, quadruple-faking centers the league as ever seen. That's tremendous dexterity and patience for such big men.
So I've been saying this for years now - cause it is kinda overlooked and forgotten but these 2 teams changed conferences prior to the 80/81 season. And the Bucks actually won 60 games in their first year in the East. Though San Antonio was pretty good as well I don't think they were as good as Milwaukee was from say 81 to 87. I do feel that if Milwaukee had stayed in the West they may have provided the Lakers with a little more consistent threat during those years. Maybe even break through a make a Finals appearance which they just couldn't do in the East with Boston and Philadelphia.
