    No matter how good the primer and paint, you MUST prepare properly which means light sanding with a fine (200 grit) sandpaper, then vacuum and clean/dry really well. Keep in mind, most window manufacturers (Andersen/Jeld-Wen) says the warranties are void if the original finish is painted. But of course, you can't wipe one's behind with their warranties anyway, so . . . it wouldn't stop me. However, I would use caution painting vinyl windows which are exposed to direct sunlight all year round. Also, I would avoid drastic color changes; like from white to black etc;, It's usually best to stick with similar colors.

    I’m not sure that I want to paint the actual window itself but just the frame on the exterior...what do you think? Would that look odd...part of the window interior being white and the outside frame being a darker grey/black color?
    What do you recommend for painting them?

      Hey Todd I might be able to help the situation. To me it sounds like you aren't actually talking about any part of the window but what is around it rather. If that is the case then you should look into getting your windows "wrapped". They will use an aluminum trim coil that you can pick the color for. It does not look weird at all having 2 different colors!

    • @marcus6425

      I did some research on this before and I know that paint stores do carry darker colors specific for vinyl applications and use a green base instead of straight black and it has an affect on how the plastic underneath handles direct sunlight and heat.
      A lot of concern floating around, but if researched and done correctly with the right paint, it’s a creative solution.

      I've used some sort of light sanding on virtually every project I've painted for the past 40 years. There's no downside, and you mitigate any dust, hair, grit etc. that may have fallen on the surface. I like using those thin sanding sponge sheets from S-W, followed by vacuuming any dust, followed by a damp cloth or tack cloth. After the second coat the surface is usually like glass. Just shooting the unsanded surface with another coat cannot smooth out a pronounced lump.

I went into SW asking for PRO Industrial Multi surface acrylic as mentioned in this video & they gave me a very tough time when I told them it was to paint my windows. They were certain it would cause warping, but I’m not 100% convinced because the sales rep was a kid, not a contractor. I’m ok with taking a risk, seems to be a lot of contradicting opinions out there???

      Warping comes from heat. If you paint a white or light colored vinyl window black, or dark colors, instead of reflecting the light/heat, it will absorb the heat. So if you paint the windows in traditionally cold climate areas, or you have many large shade trees, large roof overhangs, porch, etc....you should be fine. If you are painting on the side of house that gets regular and direct sunlight, you could be in for problems, such as premature window replacements that can be expensive.

      remove windows? the issue you are speaking of is not an issue. there is a gasket that is the break between the glass and what he is painting. what he is doing is not different than if a customer orders a clad window with vinyl exterior and wood interior and both being different material and color. If you are speaking of the interior track where the window opens and closes, it would not be wise to paint that because the window would rub the paint off or even stick to the paint. not a wise to paint beyond what he is painting.

      @Brent Waits he is referring to sun exposure over time, and is correct. Heat factor causes the vinyl to lose integrity. Sorry, but poor video with zero value. Am dealing with a horrible experience with custom Simonton windows purchased through the Home Depot. I live in a community that has custom exterior color windows (dark brown). The windows come in white and have to be painted to match the color scheme. Although the windows look good on the outside, the interior portions of all of the windows have overspray. Vendor is stating that the overspray is so called "Standard" and is pushing back on remedying the matter. Am considering filing small claims lawsuit.

      @camdecorations9779 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No the paint will bond to the window in the UK we have the same sort of paint, we do use a cleaning agent to make sure the surface is clean before we spray

    • @dougburgoyne2418
      @dougburgoyne2418 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are counting on the selected paint to make the bond. Sounds like they were painting over previous paint (faded). I wouldn't bet my money on that lasting 5 years! If I painted direct to the vinyl window, I would prep with light sand of 200 grit, wipe with denatured alcohol and then use an adhesion promoter made for vinyl and plastics. That is what auto guys spray on bumpers and trim that are not metal prior to top coating. Allows for much better bond, and some flex without cracking as well. Bulldog makes an excellent adhesion promoter.

    You should probably remove this video. Right after I watched it, I called in an order for the exact same color and product at Sherwin Williams. When I picked it up, the label they printed and stuck to the top of the can says “Not recommended for use on vinyl” with “Non Returnable Tinted Color” right below it. I thought I would try it anyways. It flakes off with my fingernail, even 3 days after I painted it. It’s a brand new window sitting in my garage waiting to be installed by our window company. Talk about upsetting... $55 down the drain, not to mention all the time and effort of removing it all now.

    • @jerrybauer6736
      @jerrybauer6736 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      its the color you chose that is not safe for vinyl. All the labels say that unless its a vinyl safe formula. Paint takes at least 20 days to fully cure. There is a difference between dried and cured.
      An adhesion primer wouldn't hurt, Sherwin makes "extreme bond" for problem surfaces. De-glossing also helps.

    • @cjones22p
      @cjones22p 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You have to let them know it will be used on vinyl and they will adjust formula. He used the correct paint in the video.
