It makes me happy when people clap after the first movement of this concerto, because it means there's a lot of new people in the crowd discovering it for the first time. 💜 And that is always wanted. I always think the first movement of the Tchaikovsky kind of invites you to clap when you first hear it because the ending is so explosive, so a lot of people instinctively clap first time they hear it.
'Not clapping between movements' is a relatively new invention. In Mozart's days the audience would clap even during a movement, e.g. at an unexpected harmonic turn.
They clapped in the first movement because they don’t know the music, not surprised ,they think the music is done.Not all anybody understands the classical music, even Leopol Auer before didn’t know this piece music and said it’s anti violin, refused to play it. Today they know completely the technics of this piece music and it becomes one of the four masterpiece violins : Mendelssohn’s violin concerto in E minor, Brahm’s violin concerto in D major, Beethoven’s violin concerto in D major and Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto in D major. In the future I think maybe one more it’s Max Bruch’s violin concerto in G minor.
Clapping between movements is made out to be such a terrible thing, supposedly showing the ignorance of an audience. In Mozart's times people even applauded during the pieces, if there was e.g. an unexpected harmonic turn that showed the composer's skills and imagination. Being a classical musician myself, it doesn't bother me if people get carried away and break our into enthusiastic applause between movements.

He taught Itzak Perlman,also Michael Rabin, Pincha Zukermann, Wang hoa Chung etc.. Jascha Heitzfet is a great virtuoso , perfect violin technic, a championist of violin but a bad violin teacher, he just said watch me , watch me when he teaches the violin for his students.
