The whole experience was awesome. The feeling of unity and teamwork was amazing, and I'm glad to have worked with my fellow community members
BTMC's stream was so fun to be in too. His help in the defenses and especially his argument with xQc were absolutely great to witness live lol. It's still insane to me that an osu representative fricking TALKED TO XQC. The concept of BTMC being in a discord call with Charlie, ironmouse, Mizkif, and xQc all the some time is so surreal and only could've happened because of r/place!
And also I agree that the bot accusations are dis-heartening, but in the end it doesn't matter. We know the bot accusations make zero sense, and that we succeeded because we're the greatest community of r/place, not because of bots.
Also, I send love to all of our allies. It's wonderful that osu had so many people supporting it this year :)

@@speedweed6203In fact, white pixels are not proof of botting, but France got caught many times with bots simply because if you changed a pixel on the French flag, it was almost certainly going to be fixed by an account with no activity that was created during the event or a few days before. You got some order of stuff wrong and things missing from the day of xQc's canvas invasion. Here's what happened:
    - Mizkiff was scared of osu, because of how poorly he ended up after messing with osu; he tells xQc to not mess with osu
    - xQc attacks Turks
    - he starts building tentacles to ruin the canvas
    - attacks Hololive, which was defended by osu, despite not being an official ally at that point in time yet
    - goes past osu cookie, unaware that he stomped pxls space, osu's ally
    - decides to settle with a Twitch logo on pxls space land
    - osu helps them get their land back
    - xQc in response attacks osu
    - he gets confused, and thinks it was actually Turkey attacking him, leaves osu and attacks turkey
    - osu recovers
    - xQc decides to build his logo over peppy, unaware it's osu's land
    - osu tries to defend peppy
    - xQc at some point finds out osu defended Hololive as well
    - BTMC vs xQc negotiations happen
    - xQc, because of wherever he goes osu defends it, assumes osu either claims a huge part of the canvas or is allied with it
    - negotiations fail, xQc attacks osu cookie
    - some more negotiations happen, in the meantime osu rebuilds the cookie, also puts a clown nose on xQc's logo
    - xQc ends up leaving osu alone under the condition osu doesn't attack him and stops with the clown nose, also moves his logo to the blue corner
    - peppy is rebuilt
From this point I didn't participate, so less details here:
    - some more purple tentacles happened
    - xQc covered Star Wars (another osu ally) with his logo, someone gives it a clown nose, he writes xQcL over the osu cookie
    - Star Wars and osu cookie recover

For the bot argument, I'll be repeating someone elses argument on the r/place reddit. If there were bots maintaining the osu logo (which there were likely more on peppy being that he's harder to maintain seeing as people can help with the osu circle w/o overlay) then any bots over said osu logo would have two jobs: 1. Find pixels of the wrong color 2. Replace said pixel with the right color. I think most of us can agree that this would be the simplest way to pseudocode a bot, and most other ways would be a waste of time to code or cpu. So therefore, when reddit changed their code to only accept white pixels, bots would see the white on the canvas on the pink circle then say "hey this pixel is wrong lemme fix it rq" and try to place a white pixel over the already white pixel (or essentially the bot does nothing) which would mean that even if the osu community was 100% bots the destruction of osu would not have gone any faster than if there were no bots (also most bots would have crashed seeing that they couldn't find the colors that they wanted in the ui, there's more information about this in r/osuplace

    • @HoloTWWOriginal
      @HoloTWWOriginal 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No the simplest way to code it would be to have the accounts automatically place a certain color every 5 to 20 minute time intervals (depending on whether or not they took the time to get the accounts placing them verified or not). Just some details about the third, fourth day and the white ending (around the frenchies):
    - Most of the heat and focus of attacks on the last two days were directed at the oversized french flag which may explain why the OSU logo took less hits
    - At the end the french streamers quickly realized that everything was going to turn white and with the focus of spanish and american streamers their flag was one of the first thing to diseappear.
So they decided to write "France" in white as their last feat and used the OSU logo as a landmark to construct it (it eventually turned into "Free" instead of the "Fra" or the "Fail" the american streamers tried to make as well)
(I downloaded and looked at the script the french used as they were accused of botting and I was surprised to see it was just an overlay.
And most of all, they credited the overlay OSU used for the event as they apparently used the same code for their)
Overall the event was incredible to follow.
All the communities building together and interacting with each other was stunning.

      Some things you got wrong.
      1. The Spanish and American streamers didn't fully realize what was happening until probably around a minute after the white out started. At which point the then hard focused the french flag. By that point it was already around 50% gone.
      2. The white "France" never made it to "free* it went from " FRA" to " FAIL" and then immediately to "ERAI " because the Americans decided to just stop it with turning F to E.

As a french viewer, I'm deeply apologize for griefed the Osu logo at the end and hope you didn't get too mad for this.
We knew that r/place will be whited anyway, so to proof that french viewer weren't bots, we decided to write "FR" in white.
And since your big and handsome Osu logo was easy to locate, we chose your spot to begin the F.
It was, at least from what I followed, nothing personal.
For the boting accusations, we know that Osu didn't use bot. Or at least not a lot, as people said. Lots of analysis proof this fact.
Another hand, lots of proof show that Hispanics and US people used a bot, plus lots of them were banned for it.
You fought and defended well and did a great and beautiful logos, we love it.

tldr: the people who genuinely believe the osu logo was whited out because we supposedly botted are braindead. bots would have just changed all incorrect pixels (from before the white out) to white and stopped at that.
can we talk about how stupid the idea that the osu logo was whited out so quick was because we had bots is. like, it would imply that the bots we were supposedly using would overwrite pixels that are already correct (which makes no sense) cause thats the only way they would white out our own logo. if bots were actually being used they would only place on incorrect spaces (pixels that dont match the overlay) and would either try to correct already incorrect pixels or the white pixels that other bots would have put over incorrect pixels. once all incorrect pixels were whited over, bots would just continue trying to fix the same spots, not destroy the logo. the quick destruction of the osu logo is proof of how much of a target the logo was (same with the french flag)
sry for writing a whole paragraph but it made me really mad when people started saying the quick whiteout of the osu logo was because of bots we were supposedly using like it was an obvious fact.

Beware of the wall of text(My own side of the story and opinions):
Clarification: osu did have bots indeed, just like almost every other community. The bots that people were using on osu were only good for repairing the small details and not large scale wars. Which is why they didn't help all that much.
Information regarding bots and the situation around them for those who are interested:
I looked into the code of many bots that were created, plus ran a few myself to test them making my own art around the canvas(had 100 accounts with each one having a unique IP; [This only takes 10 mins to do, so you can imagine how easy it is to have 1000+ accounts running).
The Websockets and API used to place pixels changed. I can confirm that as my bot also ended up 'breaking'.
(And no I never destoryed nor protected osu with a bot, only on an empty places)
By default the bots repair and place the top left pixels of a build first then scan, row by row unless specified a certain row to check from the start. (Which is also why you can see heavy activity on there on heatmaps)
PSA: The 'Public' bots were trash. In no way could you run 200 acounts, let alone 1000+ accounts using them efficiently on singlethread.
The only way some people could bot efficiently was if they created their own from scratch. (Sure it's not hard, time was the main issue.) The main bot everyone used had 3 main problems that prevented it from being efficient.
    1. It wasn't multithreaded, it could only place one pixel at a time.
    2. Most of the time you'd end up with 3 accounts placing onto the same pixel at the same time due to no "work queue" this wasted a lot of time and effort.
    3. Most bots didn't cache the image used. So it checked each individul pixel including transparent ones one at a time to see if any pixel is the wrong color. Then the next account would do the exact same thing increasing the time it takes to place each pixel.
I have no doubt that there are private bots that some people made that were amazing, shame I didn't get access to those. Then there's the whole other subject on the botnet tampermoney scripts people had that entire communities were using that had placed pixels automatically based on commands given from the 'control center'/'leader'.
"osu turning white instantly because of streamer"
That was incorrect, it was already half white before they called it out and started raiding it.
We can just assume this is because osu was the very first pieces of art to be built on the canvas and stay there.
Maybe because it survived many attacks so people just wanted to get rid of it once and for all.
It's possible that a massive group of people targeted osu before the french but we didn't know who and no one owned up to it. If they did then we missed it.
All in all Hasan is an idiot for instantly spreading misinformation to all people watching the streams without knowing anything at all.
(He was the one who originally said that the bots were placing white and that it's proof that france and osu were botting.)
Everyone had botters no one could control that, people just seemed to forget that and push everything onto osu and France placing them in the limelight.
In the end all we need is the pure data from Reddit to find how much of it was truely botted that we don't know of, we could also check the accounts for which community targeted osu when we do get it.
The truth will come out in the end.
Bad publicity is still publicity. I am glad osu is in the limelight even if it's for the wrong reasons. More people will now know of its existence maybe even try it.

    • @xen9936
      @xen9936 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Oh and one other thing. I really gotta shout out the Dutch/PlaceNL for the amazing script they made for tampermonkey. They even got away with it because of the focus on osu and France in the end. Heck, even their subreddit openly talks about the usage of it with pride. It's a bloody open secret.
They created the autoplace script that most other communities used(Including the r/PlaceFrance)
No need to create your own accounts and hide them behind a different IPs if you can use an entire community of 4000 accounts running it instead.

Though I would say that, no it's not for the "wrong reasons" personally. While some in the community might've taken it in their hands, it was never really encouraged.
It's mostly everyone's bias that they hate a particular community for being able to represent themselves because they believe it's not possible.

I have to disagree with that. I remember that the "vegan" script gathered all of the pixel differences and then picked a random one.
Similarly, the possibly most popular bot script uses one thread per account.
Granted, that's pretty inefficient resource management, plus it's python, so I'm not sure if they have taken steps to support "real" multi-threading.

The thing that was upsetting about the event this time around is apparently xqc had his stream try to replace the french flag with a big ass (like there were a lot of asses on the canvas at this point) and the Reddit mods responded by permabanning anyone who put a pixel down in that area, without any warning, and regardless of streamer association or whether or not they were building the ass. So tens of thousands of users just got permenently banned for no good reason from participating in the canvas. A lot of french users too who were just trying to put their flag back, and any user who put a pixel down close enough to the butt to get hit by the purge. Unfortunately I was hit in the fray just as an osu! member putting down pixels where needed.
I don't really use reddit, but it's this kind of reaction where I see how Reddit mods get their bad steryotypes. Just no concern for the community in a poorly executed effort to get rid of a participating streamer, without warning either. r/place was fun, but I don't know how I feel about participating in another one if they do it again. May not have a choice anyways if my permaban timer is still ticking by next event.

Unfortunately I missed out on the event due to other commitments. Which did leave me full of regret. But just watching this video alone made me feel warm inside, the teamwork and resolve the Osu! Community has is astonishing and I say that with great respect and emphasis. I’m glad to be part of this community. Thanks so much for the video mate. I enjoyed the content

participating on even placing only not too many pixel, really makes me truly happy that i can participate in this event, and its genuinely funny that the moment that I turned on my computer on the second day and watched BTMC's stream for a bit, the xqc vs btmc negotiation happened lol

Despite all the people taking this r/place thing just a tad bit too serious, it was all so heartwarming to see. I loved it so much and the artwork that came out of it in the end is absolutely phenominal! I can't wait to see next year's edition

I'm from r/mysterydungeon (represented by the little white and red egg with wings right under osu) and I can probably speak for our entire community that we are grateful for the protection granted to us during that time.
    Thank you and happy exploring.

Don't mess with osu, their entire gameplay loop is based around clicking circles for hours.
It was good being your neighbors. Our group was behind all of the Miku's scattered around the canvas.

  • @ultraninja5783
    @ultraninja5783 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I would say another factor to osu's longevity was due to the fact that it also had a ton of supports and alliances. like when osu was attacked, other anime and vtuber communities also helped out with the logo when they had pixels to spare

I was right next to osu (GFL community and also helped Omori), was fucking wild seeing the raids over your territory, glad you guys won out in the end. I think it would have been a lot more interesting if they had made it like last time where you couldn't just make a new account the day of and it had to be a week old.

11:32 Osu! was set as the starting point for the "F" letter, because it was already white and thus was an easy pinpoint. It's not a ahte move from the frenchs, it was just the easiest pinpoint on the whole map

The osu! community wasn't even the only smaller community to maintain such a large amount of space. I'm sure most people here have seen the post from u/JordiTK about the top 30 pixel counts by community that place osu! at 30th with 21,500 pixels. That's honestly incredible given how many countries were getting top spots from their oversized flags (that I only had a personal problem with if they didn't do anything neat with them, like India before the last few hours). In the comments, Jordi left some extra notes. One of those was 31st going to the Gacha Alliance with 21,000 pixels. I don't have an accurate estimate on the amount of people that were actively doing r/place for osu! but BTMC's stream had more viewers than the Gacha Alliance has as a whole. They used the overlays pioneered by osu! to do their projects and also refused to use bots to do the work. One of the three key defining differences are that the Gacha Alliance was formed during the event after the repeated attacks on the Genshin Impact logo in the top left, while osu! was already unified, naturally. Another was that the osu! community was very open with their projects (after the Genshin Impact logo was abandoned) and attracted more attacks on their turf because of it while the Gacha Alliance opted to have a very large collection of smaller projects scattered around that wouldn't attract invasions and their most recognizable work was the collection of gacha game logos in the bottom left. It wasn't the only large project, with the CN Genshin Impact logo that most people wouldn't recognize, the keqLove emote, and a Gudako being other larger projects that escaped the attention of the masses. The third was that osu! was more coordinated by far because of the streamers on their side at all times. That's not something the Gacha Alliance had. The most help the Gacha Alliance got from influencers was the one time they were being attacked by a Russian streamer named 5opka with his 5k viewers. In that skirmish they held strong for a bit before the lack of numbers made them attempt to get assistance from BTMC and Enviosity, whom both came to their aid and 5opka was pushed back and had to attempt a different location. They never fought off Mizkif or xQc, as a matter of fact, xQc deliberately avoided the Alliance's keqLove on his day 3 voiding, and the intel I was given on why this is would be because "she's cute", but they did manage to hold their ground and slip into the shadows to avoid a community that would have attacked them as much as they attacked osu! if the multiple discouraging posts about the gacha logos says anything, and they did a lot of active negotiations to gain as much space as they did in that bottom left corner. Jordi put their pixel count at 21,000 but because of the methods applied, I'm honestly not even sure if Jordi found all the affiliated projects to count their pixels or was even able to recognize that they were affiliated with the Alliance. It's entirely possible they had more than osu! and I don't mean to discredit anyone with that, both communities did astounding things and nothing can take that away. In the meantime I'm sure Jordi used the final version of the canvas which has a lot of unfinished projects that were started last minute, so when the clean up crew decides what they're restoring it's entirely possible that the Alliance gets back 2 of their larger projects that were bulldozed by Zerkaa in his last minute attempt to make a portrait of KSI (which did not even get close to finished). I'm sure most people will prefer the version the clean up crew provides since it won't have nearly as much random splatters of pixels in certain places. If there is anything that anyone should take from the things these two communities (and honestly the VTuber fans, too given how even large streamers wanted nothing to do with them, and how fast they fixed ANY minorly out of place pixel on their projects) it's that weebs are some of the most determined and dedicated people on the internet when it comes to pixels, and they should not be messed with.

I loved being a rep for r/foxholegame in btmc and osu’s vc chats. I can absolutely say, i enjoyed every second. For the hours i sat in there coordinating foxhole and osu players to help eachother, it was fun. Nice to see osu getting the rep it needed during that time in a vid.
Also felt great to quite literally piss off xQc. Specifically ME. He called Me out, it felt great.

i remember that the attack on the osu! logo happened after the xqc logo on top of ppy
the purple void traveled from turkey, to the UK, to hololive, to peru, to touhou and komi, and then they settled on top of ppy, btm told him to fuck off, and then he attacked the osu logo
i know the whole story because i was collaborating with hololive as well xd

Having our logo pretty close to osu was pretty fun. Always had a view of what was going on.
It did mean that we were caught in the cross fire every now and then (I was part of the rust community, just above osu. That's Rust the programming language, not the game), but we had a powerful ally ourselves in Foxhole.
Those guys were absolutely insane. Much smaller community than osu, but the amount of area they held and helped defend was just surreal. I guess it helps that Foxhole as a game actually has some similarities to place.
As an osu player myself, I did advocate for diplomatic relations with osu and we did eventually get a communication channel open. For the most part, we were pretty capable of defending ourselves, though.
(Well... apart from the bots near the end. It was confirmed in Reddit DMs that it was indeed bots, but they never told us what their problem with us was...)
