    Dear Tom,
I must say, I really appreciate your refreshingly honest and realistic approach. Unlike many others, you’re not peddling the fantasy that one can live a "luxury" lifestyle in Pattaya on just $1000 a month. This kind of misleading advice can be dangerous for potential expats who, based on such claims, pack up and head to Thailand with unrealistic expectations. They often end up unable to afford basic things like health insurance or even decent entertainment.
While I'm not advocating for a lavish lifestyle, I do believe it’s crucial to be honest about the true costs of living in Pattaya, especially if you want to enjoy your time there. Things do cost money, and anyone claiming you can live well on a shoestring budget is simply not being realistic.
The Real Costs: My Own Estimate
For my part, I estimate that I’ll need about €3000-€3500 per month to live comfortably in Pattaya. Here’s why: I enjoy eating well and often, I like to take extended trips, and I want to live in a very bright, immaculate, and well-maintained apartment. The cost of a place like that is simply not going to be less than €400-€600 per month, and even then, I would want it to be high quality. Beyond that, I plan to have comprehensive health insurance, which, as you know, isn’t cheap.
If you factor in eating out at quality restaurants and taking occasional day trips, it's clear that living well means investing more than what the typical "1000 Dollar" reports suggest.
    The Risks of Underestimating Costs
The danger of the "luxury on a budget" myth is that it sets newcomers up for failure. Too many people arrive in Pattaya with a low budget, only to realise they can’t afford the basics - like health insurance or a decent social life - without making severe compromises. This leads to frustration, as they’re forced to either downgrade their lifestyle or face unexpected financial strain.
    Frugality Isn't for Everyone
While frugality is certainly an option, it’s not for everyone. Living cheaply and being disciplined enough to maintain a minimalist lifestyle takes a lot of effort and isn’t sustainable for many. People need to understand that to live comfortably in a foreign country, a realistic financial cushion is essential - and that includes both everyday living costs and unexpected expenses.
Conclusion: Be Realistic About Your Budget
I wholeheartedly agree with you, Tom, that it’s important to be clear-eyed about the costs involved. Living in Pattaya can be affordable, but a comfortable, fulfilling life will require more than just $1000 a month. For anyone planning to move, my advice is to plan on at least €3000-€3500 per month if you want to enjoy your time there without compromising on health, comfort, or quality of life.
Thanks again for your honest and thoughtful perspective. I hope more people will take your advice seriously, rather than relying on the unrealistic portrayals of life in Pattaya that are so common.
Best regards and see you soon again :)

I don’t recommend completely giving up alcohol, but drink very, very little, and only the best there is: from France, Germany, Switzerland, and Italy. Otherwise, total abstinence from getting drunk. That is truly unhealthy. Don’t isolate yourselves in completely remote areas. Find something to do: learn Thai, teach your native language, get involved socially, read great books, make TH-cam videos… but stay active! Don’t forget your medical check-ups, have regular checks! Love the T-shirt, Tom! Btw, I am impressed you are not drinking alcohol, that is a good way to save money. Your budget obviously depends on your lifestyle, I have talked with a lot of foreigners about that. Retirees are mostly done with the nightlife at bars, so a budget between 1200 and 1500 USD a month is common for the ones I know. Not only to survive, but they thrive and are very happy with their life. That gives you a variation of local and foreign food as well. It depends a lot on your choice of housing though, and what you are comfortable with. Your housing can be everything between 6000 baht rent, and up to 50.000 baht or more, if you want. So there you go. The most common option for retirees in Pattaya, I think would be paying around 15.000 baht a month, a one bedroom condo 😊😊

I probably have over 100 shirts and I definitely don't need another but sometimes these colors just call to me. About a month ago, I reached my all time high in weight and decided I needed to loose 20kgs. I'm down 5kgs now with 15 more to go. I decided on eliminating alcohol for now and most cane sugars, I'm also to not eat between 2000-1000 daily. I've upped my daily workout and walking significantly. My budget could be double what it is but in the last year I'm trying to live the way I talk about on YT in a comfortable level. Thanks for all your great content, I really appreciate how you answer questions and things like that.

I have been budgeting and very frugal for the past 7 years so I am positive it's been established as a habit. I live on @2500 a month or less depending on utilities and unexpected expenses. Food is always 300 or less. That is here in South West Florida where the insurance is high and property taxes are high. Anything above the 2500 I put into my savings account. If I move there, several of those expenses will go away, like pool maintenance, lawn care, property taxes, insurance, auto insurance so I think 2k will be a very comfortable budget for me. I have a 2/2 house and barely use half of it. I spend most of my time in my recliner or out by my pool. A nice high condo with a breeze and a decent balcony would be ideal. 1 bedroom separated from kitchen/living area. the main things I need are 1. a comfortable bed 2. a recliner or something like it and 3. a big vanity in the bathroom or at least room for a cabinet next to it. those stand alone sinks with no room for toiletries are useless. I traveled a lot in 2022 for my job and discovered the things that are really important to me to be comfortable no matter where I am. I think those are pretty simple.

You sound like me. 😀 I was living in SW Florida before Tampa, then Naples, then Key West but my budget was just to high. I lived in an RV and I felt like I needed ocean front properties which always ate up most of my budget. Living in Thailand, I learned to minimize. My most expensive piece of furniture is my mattress and then my sofa/recliner set. I like to eat so I budget $800 but rarely spend half. I have an income available that's more then double of my monthly budget as I have also learned to save for a rainy day. 😂😀😂

Someone told me, it the one piece of furniture that you spend the most time on nightly, why wouldn't you want the best? I would lay down on every mattress, get comfortable, sometimes I even took short naps in the stores, I'm sure I drove the sales people crazy. Still when I finally found it, I'm 100% positive I found the best mattress in Thailand. Today, I fall asleep with 5 minutes of laying on my bed every night. It's the most comfortable piece of furniture I have ever owned.

Good to bring this up, Tom. Too many TH-camrs are just talking nonsense when it comes to cost of living not just in Thailand but also other places in the world. I especially get ticked off, when someone is making $5000,00 to $6000,00 from TH-cam and they are spending between $2000.00 and $3000,00 on the places they write about, but they are telling you that you could live well in those same places for $1000.00 a month.
I know how to budget myself and I live comfortably in Vegas, averaging about $3.000.00 a month. To live like me here, most people spend about $4000.00. For me, the most important things are accommodation and food and I've done my research and know where to go to eat and buy groceries.
I kind of got grandfathered in a 2 bed, 2 bath condo in a guard gated community in the most premium part of town, where my lease is only $1200.00 a month. If you count in car and health insurances, power, mobile, wi-fi, cable , water, garbage, I am close to $2000.00 and I spend about $1000.00 on food and entertainment. My car is paid off and so are my credit cards. I have no debts but instead of owning a condo, I rent.
The money that I would use to buy a condo, I simply have in in a special cash deposit that yields me about 5% interest ($1000.00 a month) which basically pays my lease and I don't have to worry about HOA nor Morgage and my cash principal stays the same. It's just another extra source of income, without headaches. If I moved to Thailand, I know I could live just as well, if not better on $2300.00 a month, downsized to about 800 sq. feet , one large bedroom, with all amenities, where I would be looking to pay between $600.00 to $1000,00 a month, depending on taste and location.

I'm confused on your comment. In this video I only talked about monthly budgets. I stated as example $1500 as a basic budget Approx 40K-50K baht a month. From those budgets you pay for accommodations, food, nightlife, Transportation, insurance, phone ect... Do you think these budgets are inflated?
I have other videos that talk about accommodation prices. Even my building you can find rooms as cheap as 8,000 baht, I have a friend living in a Thai style ground apart with no ac for 3,000 baht a month, if he keeps his electric under 700 baht a month he gets it free. I live in a 48 sqm unit that I have talked about many times with electric bills of 2600 baht a month but I run my ac 24/7.
I'm guessing the average expat pays approx. 15,000 baht a month but many pay much more.

Some constructive bonus to my comment:
For those on a $1000 monthly budget, unfortunately, I don’t have any advice for living in Pattaya permanentely in luxus style.
They should probably stay most part of the year in places like Pittsburgh, Paderborn, or Perpignan (not Pattaya), rather than relocating PERMANENTELY to Pattaya if they want a lifestyle that offers at least a minimum of comforts and a reasonable standard of living. With that budget, you're more likely to achieve that in the social welfare states of Europe.
However, I do have some advice for those with a €1500 budget, who want more than just scraping by in Pattaya but can't afford to live there solely on their own means. If you're a native English speaker, consider finding a part-time job before you leave for Thailand, ideally teaching English for around 20 hours per week at a language school. This is perfectly legal, and the language schools handle all the necessary paperwork - I've checked this out myself out of curiosity. It's crucial to arrange this before you leave, not after you’ve already arrived. Although, if you're on vacation there, you can always visit a few schools to get a sense of the working conditions. I estimate this could bring in an additional €300 to €500 per month, which can really make a difference - that's roughly what you'd need to cover health insurance costs in Thailand.
If you want to boost your income even further, you could also start writing travel blogs on TH-cam ahead of time. This could bring in an additional €100 per month, but let’s be conservative about these estimates. However, remember: don't become dependent on these extra earnings. They should serve as a supplement - a way to bridge the gap between living comfortably on €1500 per month and enjoying a truly comfortable lifestyle with real amenities, which would be closer to €2000 per month.
For those on the $1000 budget, I don’t want to leave you completely frustrated, so I have a small suggestion: consider a part-time "expat" approach. Work from home in a well-paying job for 6, 7, or 8 months, and save the money. Use that to top up your $1000 pension or fully finance your stay, so it doesn’t feel so tight. Essentially, a retiree receiving $1000 a month could bring an extra $2,000-3,000 with them for four months, and during the winter months when it's cold and dreary in the Northern Hemisphere, they could have a fantastic time in Thailand.
But I want to be clear: I'm not writing any of this to dictate anyone's decisions. Free people should make their own choices and take responsibility for their lives. For people like me, the language teaching option could also work in German or French. My advice keeps you active, engaged, and opens up many social opportunities - and who knows? Maybe you'll meet a lovely Thai woman among your students. When I taught French on the French Riviera back in 1990, I had a lot of fun with the local teachers by the sea. After three months of teaching in the summer, I was able to live comfortably for six months in Germany and finish my studies.
So, remember: there’s always a solution!

Education visa is good option for you, Sir. If you qualify for a DTV visa, that is even better. But that requires showing 500.000 baht or equivalent in a bank. A DTV visa will give you 180 days of stay each entry, unlimited entries as it`s a multiple entry visa, in a period of 5 years. Each entry can be extended with 180 days within Thailand as well. You may even renew that after 5 years. If you apply based on learning Thai, be aware that you must attend classes over that period. When you reach 50 years of age, you will be safe to get a visa based on retirement, which you can extend every 12 months.

I don’t live there YET, but I’m 65 so my insurance alone - if I want a comprehensive policy - would be close to $1k/month. For a CIGNA International policy. Add in rent/visa/elec/water/wifi and that’s at least $1500/month right there. I’m thinking $100/day for food/drink/entertainment/travel/misc. on the high side

    • @MargaritasinParadise
      @MargaritasinParadise  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Sounds like you have already done some research. I think your health insurance cost could be lowered by going with a Thai company here for approximately $300 month. Otherwise, I think you're definitely on point with your estimates. I budget $24 a day for food for instance but seldom $12 a day. My entertainment can vary as well, some nights I spend $150. Other nights maybe $15. Fortunately I only go out 2-3 nights a week.

Mahomes escaped 1 sack with a foul and another by ducking down and slipping out, still he was sacked 4 times! WTF is that about. Defense was decent and won the game. This 15 game train ride has been bumpy lately but better than a wagon ride.

Actually the $1K budget is a survival mode. It doesn't include any transactional relationship and very limited alcohol. Zero western food, & no golf.
A westerner wanting to invest themselves into the Thai culture will have to still maintain the basics which doesn't leave much extras.
      $200 - accommodations,
      $300 - food/water ($10day),

    • @MargaritasinParadise

I love a good debate. Spell it out? Where would you save money? I know many people who live in Thailand on less than $1000 a month. All of them don't have monthly accommodation cost for instance because they pre-purchased their condo ahead of time. But they still have maintenance cost. Most farrang can not survive on only $10 a day for food. Even eating strictly Thai food will likely cost most people more. Insurance is the possible savings. Many people skip this altogether, a 20 yo obviously doesn't need it but a 60 yo would be foolish not to have it. I have a friend name Warren that lives on a budget of less than $1200 a month and saves $400 a month. He lives in my building. He drinks 2 beers a day, eats 100% thai food, is super happy but lives a meager lifestyle by most peoples standards. Anyway, what would you do differently?

My first trip was 1987, my first time in Pattaya was 2006. I'm definitely still learning though. I'm a positive person and have little time for negativity and zero time for complainers. (You know the type that complain about everything. Nothing is ever good, they’re always right.) I'm the skeptical type guy that relies on double checking. Thailand can be an easy transition following certain channels or it can be a train wreck. Navigating the visa system for instance has probably saved so many people time and effort. Knowing where the best pizza or not to go to the Crowne Point Space for their 300 baht World Famous Pad Thai when they go to the No Name restaurant for the best 40 baht Pad Thai has probably save a few people some baht. I started my channel because I didn't believe what many of the channels were saying. Traveling up North to Ban Chiang and finding a video in english about a World Heritage Sight is so useful. I think the TH-cam platform all comes down to perspective.

I find a place like that ,and I would sign a year lease in a hurry and just live with it for the first year and be more than happy .l see that it's very doable from what I can see available online .As soon as my house sells ,I want to email Nathan and tell him I'm a friend of yours and you sent me ,and could he please help to hook me up..I can live anywhere for the first year,no problem .I will be just very glad to be there

Nathan only does Jomtien, have you already contacted him?
Here is another friend info@happyliferealty.net name Rich he can help you when you arrive.
Many of these guys want help people that are here looking for condos right now. Working with someone abroad creates issues unless that put down deposits. Most people are lookers, they want work done for free.
I also think you could walk into my building for instance and probably rent something that day for approximately 15,000 baht.
      Your options are plentiful.

Of all the places you can live in Thailand why would you choose the area with the most crime and violence. Just wondering.

    • @MargaritasinParadise
      @MargaritasinParadise  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Just out of curiosity why do you think this is a dangerous place to live? I'm not trying to answer a question with the question but I personally believe this is a super safe area. I've lived here for a number of years and I've never heard of violence or the crime that you're talking about other than the occasional drunk driver or somebody stealing a gold necklace.

@joeshmooo5327 I listen to the Pattaya news everyday and seldom see any of this, I'm not doubting you, I just need to see it. What newspaper are you talking about? I can go out at pretty much anytime of the day or night and other than maybe a territorial soi dog will never see an issue of concern. I've been coming to Pattaya since 2006, Thailand since 1987 IMO this is truly a safe place.

I lived in Pattaya for 2 years and my budget is always above 100000 bahts per month. I live in 45 square feet flat and I pay 25000 per month. My electricity bill is between 3500 and 4500 per month. These are just examples. Thank you for being realistic unlike some other utubers

I live in a 48sqm condo and run my ac 24/7 during most of the year, my electric is consistent at 2600 baht a month. I get the 100K a month, it took me 10 years to break some of my habits, now I'm down to 50K but I own my condo. Thanks again.

Thanks for the input. I love the critical feedback about the beginning. I definitely should have mention an emergency cash fund. I know at least 10 people in my immediate area that survive on $1200 or less a month in Pattaya. That lifestyle isn't for me. I just called a buddy and verified his cost of doing his visa himself, 1,900 baht. My visa cost 12,500 last July, I have other friends paying as much as 22,000 baht for the same visa as I have. I asked him why he pays so much, he likes the girl. 😂

i agree no way u can live in thailand on $1000 a month unless you dont go out just going on holidays there u dont get the rate there now compared to 10 years ago .im hoping to make the move to thailand in next few years but not until i have at least $40000 in savings not possible at the momment just holidays at momment and then theres the visas at well which u need a level of amount of money in the bank to get the visas .when i move in a few years will be a digital nomad visa which u need half million in a thai bank account .

@MargaritasinParadise yes I know about the bar girls margarita in paradise been to pattaya 5 times learn the hard way money for family ect money for gold I won't get mixed up with bar girls again unless it's pay as u go buying drinks in bar and that's all u can get out of them .I'm on Thai friendly and meet genuine thai girls on there that are not after money all the time.someone connected with me yesterday about the education visa apply for that where u learn Thai or Thai cooking and you can stay in Thailand for 3 months and keep applying for the 90 day reporting which is 20000 baht for that and I don't need to have the amount in the bank like other visas so will make my move to Thailand in the next year thanks for the advice 👍 margarita in paradise.

Do you trust youtubers to tell you the truth. I don't...
TH-camrs only want to make money off youtube by doing the same old thing like eating street food, showing hotel rooms and this goes for all these southeast asian youtubers.
Buy a one these condos in southeast asian countries and watch you take a loss on it. When you go to sell it. Watch when you get a serious health issue like cancer or heart disease and see the costs goes high or these private health companies drop you. 😅

I'm thinking you haven't followed me before. I created my channel because of things you mentioned. I would watch others and I would say "what are you talking about". My father always told me, I was to straight forward; I would maybe say things before I thought them through. I have another YT channel on metal detecting, it's like 7years old, has a few subscribers and doesn't make money. When I started Margaritas in Paradise I had no plans, I knew most channels took 3-4 years to make $100, so I knew doing this channel wasn't about the money. I literally love my life. I love living where I live and I love talking about it. I have nothing to sell, well actually I do have some shirts but I feel guilty even mentioning them so I seldom mention them. Oh, I don't lie. Well not intentionally. Anyway, I hope you have a good day.

@MargaritasinParadise again you do make money off these silly things that all youtubers do before you and after you stop. Wait until you get a serious health issue. Then you will leave for real health care that the advance countries can offer.

I know you’re right about health concerns. I've seen many people leave for this reason. Most expats in my opinion don't have health insurance. The ones that do, get top of the line health coverage in Thailand.
I have a good friend that had insurance with Pacific Cross here in Thailand. He was over weight, taking high blood pressure and cholesterol meds, and had many health issues. He failed to mention any of this when applied for the health insurance. He didn't use his insurance for just over 2 years but needed to have a heart artery stint procedure. His coverage was denied/cancel due to non-disclosure of prior heart conditions. He was pissed, blamed everyone but himself. He did get all of his premiums back for over 2 years but he was stuck paying about $30K in medical bills. In the USA, it would have been free but he didn't want to leave Thailand. To this day he complains about the price of insurance in Thailand which half of what it would cost in the USA.
