- I walk around Dewsbury in West Yorkshire known for it's rapid decline and for being one of West Yorkshire's worst towns. I try and find a decent pub as drinking seems like the only thing to do anymore. I also chat to some locals to see what their thoughts are on the town.
Join me on a search for what Dewsbury has to offer.....and to drink!

You should go to Galway. There some very good Pubs there.
Please visit Goole in East Riding mate.
It’s honestly the most depressing place I’ve ever been too and I’m from Medway Kent.

@@lewisadams8077 you’ve not been to Dewsbury then? Goole is much nicer!
1. High Street Rates rise
2. Pubs Close
3.Council stops caring
4. Amazon
5. Small Businesses Close
6. Subsidised Charity Shops take over
7. Bookies & Vape shops buy up rest of medium sized premises
8. Turkish Barbers and more Vape Shops take remainder of the small shops
9. Rates continue to rise
10. Death of the high street.
1. Immigrants and the loss of social cohesion
High street rates rise,is number 1..all by design by bankers colluding with g0vernm3nt
"I believe that banking institutions are more dangerous to our liberties than standing armies," Jefferson wrote. " If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation, then by deflation, the banks and corporations that will grow up around(these banks) will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered."
"The issuing power of currency shall be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."
We should all meditate on that amazing prediction of things to come that are not necessarily beneficial to the 99%-- but only to the 1%.

A walk around Dewsbury town centre would make the happiest person in the world clinically depressed with 5 minutes 😂
🤣
Does it I think it's ok.. better than some places I've been
I live there, and trust me whenever I walk round there shaking my head in despair, snd remembering when it was a town with all the shops it had, and the hell 🕳 it's become now
It's like a lot of towns that have suffered the same. A lot of traditional market towns have suffered greatly...
🤣
You chose two pubs and you drink Guiness?
One pub there, West Riding Refreshment Rooms, has won multiple Camra awards and was nearly Campaign for Real Ale National Winner.
It's at the Railway Station and you've missed a real gem. It really is a great pub.
Poor planning, zero research.
One of the few reasons to go to Dewsbury. Criminal to miss it out.
Best pub in Yorkshire
Superb pub!!!!!!!
West Riding is an amazing pub. However, this channel is about recording the decline of towns and cities.
That was really sad to watch. All the market towns up & down the country seem to be in a similar state.
Dewsbury still has a market just rarely opens but when it is it's nice to visit at times.
To get a fair view of dewsbury he should of gone on market day... when the town has life
Got old photos of Drwsbury in the early 70s. My gran was a Saturday girl in Woolworths. And was in the collegians shows at the Town hall.
The town was gorgeous. Really well kept.
This is heart wrenching.
Yep, my home town, wisbech in Cambridgeshire, started to fall 25 years ago when Blair opened the country to the former eastern bloc citizens, I seldom go back there now and when I do it's a flying visit, the wisbech I knew was a hard town full of hard men but there were no muggings or murders, these days it's full of Albanians and Lithuanians drinking in the streets, dealing, trafficking young girls, attacking locals out with their families, I don't recognise the place and most of the people I grew up with have moved now like I did in 2002 when my car got broken into for the umpteenth time. I still own a house there that i rent to an English couple but I don't think I'll ever live there again.
@@Norfolkbiker50 Everyone knows its immigration that kills towns, but not many will dare admit it.
It's not just Dewsbury, it's every ex Northern Mill / mining town. I see you missed the best pub in town the West Riding, winner of countless awards for it's beer and people come from Leeds and Huddersfield to drink it. You weren't far from it when you walked across the bridge at the Asda. The opposite way Leggers, fantastic pub. Town centre pubs usually are crap, everywhere
Agree the train stat pub is ok. He ort to have a walk round Batley too , its the same there. Huddersfield has to some extent too. Its M and S shut down there, and its market.
That guy was spot on about why High Streets are screwed.
Culmination of out of town shopping centres with free parking, everyone shops online (usually the non tax paying Amazon) plus councils nationwide are making parking charges extortionate in the towns.
Our small independent shops don't stand a chance
Yeh spot on mate. Same with alot of towns init 👍
We can have a pop at Amazon but next day delivery and at a fraction of the price its a no trainers really
@@Billybunts yes Ive not bin able to buy trainers for ages mate
@RustyBanner 🤣🤣 I've just noticed the typo! I'm leaving now can't be arsed to change it
That's the plan, no independent shops!
Heartbreaking to see my hometown in such a state loved growing up in Dewsbury we left in 1976 my dad took our family to Canada.
Canada under tyrant Trudeau won't be much better soon. Such a shame.
The days of pubs and friendly banter and even eye contact seem to be going now ,Ive noticed when you are in a bus station for example and you strike up a coversation with someone the other people around seem to look at you as if to say why are you talking to each other as they look at theirs sceens .Back in the 90s was best time for pubs ,thats all gone now and beer was miles better ,you didnt get a hangover off 3 pints either cause its made cheaper with more chemicals in it.Great vids man.
Yeh mate, interactions in pubs etc seem like your harrassing someone now. 100% agree with you
Still used to get a nasty hangover off of Hurlimann lager - wasn’t called hooligan for nothing. Happy days the 90s
Think the hangover now might be an age thing 🤣 but totally agree even when i was in my 20's in early 2000's I could go to pubs not arrange anything with mates and strike up conversations with anyone
The 70's and 80's for pub life were pretty good too.
Was even better in 60s and 70s .live bands every weekend. People would be queing outside at opening time. They where jam packed.atmosphere was electric. Happy days.
As an Irish man watching this it's so sad to see the decline of so many towns in England...but believe me it's happening here in Eire also!
Shame init pal 👍
Another Irishman here. It’s awful what’s happening all round the country. Towns just turning into dumps, shuttered shops everywhere, councils broke, but why are they broke? We pay enough for services don’t we? The councils like the useless government are only good at wasting money. And in ireland with their traitorous government are busy destroying what was once a beautiful happy country where people actually liked each other. Every where we look it’s just bad news.
No one here in Ireland calls it "Eire".

Great content thanks 👍 Makes you appreciate having good pubs in your town (I’m in Edinburgh)
Cheers pal. Still yet to do Edinburgh
I spent a few months behind the bar at the Welly back in the late 90's. I came in for the last few hours after the topless barmaid had finished through until the landlord took over at 11:30 to let the coppers in the back door after the late shift finished. 🤣I left Dewsbury in 2010, and it was well on its way down back then. I still go up and see family every few months and it just depressing to go into the town centre nowadays. I think its the only place I know where both McDonalds and Wetherspoons have shut down. Like the guy said, most of the good pubs in Dewsbury are out of the town centre. I went to a wake at the 'Crack' up Crackenedge lane about a mile out of the town a few weeks ago and it was really nice. The staff were really friendly, it was warm and welcoming the prices were good and the spread they put on was really nice. Dewsbury town centre is a lost cause now, unless they can find a way of getting people to go back there, but there is nothing to do anymore, so no reason to go
The Crack is a good pub, think its a Free House so they can be a bit more competitive price wise, good landlord and landlady
Great video....😂 you wanted the dingiest place and boy did you get it 🤣👍
Deffo up there of dingiest places 🤣 cheers pal

One of the reasons why town centres are dying is the internet. I buy 95% of my stuff online. Why wouldn't I? No queues, no parking problems, no noisy, smelly obnoxious people to endure, no carrying heavy bags, no crossing busy roads. I can shop 24 hours online, buy from other countries and the options I have are immense. I have no need to go into town.
True mate....i do it myself
I do it because mostly it's cheaper... But I miss my high streets... It's all very well saying cafes, pubs, restaurants, will survive but they need the "footfall" of general shoppers... What kind of society do we want to live in? We all stay at home and order everything, including, meals online? I would favour lower VAT on physical shops and a radical reduction of business rates on shops..
@@yellard6785 I understand your point but life changes whether we like it or not. I'm not the sort of person who likes high street shopping but I love surfing the net for cool stuff. I don't like eating out either. I like cooking and my food's better than the overpriced mass produced stuff on offer in town centres. And just look at the price of beer. Why would I pay £4 a pint when I can buy it for half the price in a supermarket and drink in the comfort of my own man cave?
@@gumbo7215 I am not a great cook and there is something nice about meeting with friends for a meal in a nice environment that none of us have had to cook... As for drinking in pubs.. I love the traditional style pub and it's unique Britishness that one can go to one in a business suit or jeans and baseball hat.. I love one can drink alone and watch others or be with a large crowd. If we lose them all, it will be a great loss. Of course, there are rough pubs that one wouldn't enter, young people "disco" pubs and "upmarket" wine bars.. But they aren't the traditional great democratic British pub.
@@yellard6785 Fair enough. If you like that sort of thing it's up to people like you to keep it alive. I don't care about it so I don't feel any responsibility to fund it.
Everyone keeps talking about the pub attached to Dewsbury station. It looks quaint from outside with the Virginia creeper covering the entire pub. Yes, it's got a good reputation for a great range of pints etc. The only thing that bowled me over when I went in there one afternoon was the overwhelming smell of body odour. The bar staff mustn't like opening the windows for fresh air! I've never been in since!
Just settled down with a beer after work and heres the main man on you tube 🍺🍺 love the videos mate 👍👍

I was born in Dewsbury in 1973, grew up in Mirfield and moved to the South East of England in 1998. I will NOT be back. What a depressing shit hole it is now. BTW Ravensthorpe between Dewsbury and Mirfield is like a demilitarised zone.
Christ mate, you're a glutton for punishment
You should have a pop back up to Mirfield for a visit, it's still nice and going strong. Plenty of pubs still open and new places opening over the years.
I lived in Ravensthorpe and Dewsbury Moor from the 1970's to 2000 then moved away for a while. Moved back to Ravensthorpe in 2006 it had changed so much. East European gangs, prostitution, money laundering take aways, terrible traffic. I now live in Somerset, its a different world, I'm s happy
LOL @ "tell you what, if you like gambling and vaping......" the tourist board of Dewsbury are already thinking of adding that to their leaflets

Back in the 70's I lived three or four miles away, there was a cinema, and my girlfriends posh mum used to shop at Marks and Sparks. There was a pub on the Batley Road which was the only place locally that sold Old Peculiar. In 1982, our kid's stag night started in Batley and crawled it's way towards Dewsbury, whilst the hen night ran the opposite way. When the two met up he and his fiancée buggered off at about 9:00 pm! We skipped a few pubs and spent the rest of the night drinking Old Peculiar. The next time I was there was in 2006, I went there to register Betty's death and it was pretty dire, I didn't go there again until 2015 after dad died to get a copy of his will certified. By then it had really hit rock bottom. Batley and Morley seem to have improved a little since the 70s, and maybe Wakefield too, but Dewsbury is dreadful.

You should try Grantham mate. There’s a few decent pubs and it’s a town that has had decades of decline. It’s quite historic with Margret Thatcher and Issac Newton but in terms of shops it’s almost like a ghost town now, but it’s really decent for a drink.
Same happening all over the UK were slipping into the cess pit
I agree. I'm nearly 73 and remember in the 50s & 60's when towns were bustling and shuttered up shops were hardly ever seen. No one in authority gives a sh*t these days and to be honest, I just don't go out to the town centre anymore. The plastic pubs and the plastic beer are not worth it and nobody wants to talk anyway...unless you are part of their clique, otherwise they just glance over to see if you have a few bob or might have a warrant card. If you were to find yourself in Durham in the Queen Victoria you would find the landlord knows everyone drinking in his pub (I toddled in the other day) - plenty of regulars to strike up a conversation with.

There are a few nice pubs there though, particularly the one on the Railway station and there’s an Ossett Brewery one.
There are so many of these "wander about the UK" channels, all likely inspired from Bald and Bankrupt / Backpacker Ben - but they all have one thing in common, the same comments about specific demographics / races "ruining" in Britain.

Oh please give it a break. The death of the high street and government underinvestment have affected towns badly all over the country. I love stout including Guinness but I pretty much gave up drinking it in pubs many years ago due to the inconsistent quality - clearly evidenced here. So hats off to you although I don't feel like celebrating the point.
Can't remember the name of it sorry as over a decade ago and out of my immediate area but there was a nice pub in or near Todmorden I called in out walking that served perfect Guinness and the landlord was a great welcoming type of fella, actually asked me if I wanted a top up and did so for nothing. Hebden Bridge not far away was also a place with a few good pubs back then don't know if that is still the case. They have good trade as that region has a few outdoor organizations and literary associations etc although they can be a bit too arty-posh crowd for some folk. There's always summat as they say in Yorkshire.
You did the right thing leaving that pint on the table outside. Anybody thinking of ordering the same drink and seeing that would immediately be suspicious. The glass collector would also get the message without you having to cause a scene (although quite reasonable to have done so - I mean that wouldn't happen in Ireland right). 'Chemically.' Sounds like they had not rinsed the tubes out after sterilising. Probably a fresh keg that would have cleared after the first couple of pulls. You were just unlucky enough to land with the bad timing somewhere with a poor cellarman (showing my age) or today's equivalent. Looking at it the other way: if they'd taken better care of liquid refreshment and customer think of the great free publicity... . Thing is these days too many of them DO NOT.
Most of the country has gone to a 💩hole
So what do you think the problem is as Darth Vader's daughter walks past. I wonder???
That’s really made me laugh. So bloody funny! 😂
That's a quiet day, loads of Darth Vader's Wednesday & Saturday
This is because Dewsbury is under kirklees council. It's a poorer part of West Yorkshire. Lots of the shops has closed down. The outdoor market is pretty good and Cosmc Toys is an amazing shop.
You've gotta go back and go to the west riding!! Great pub is probably one of the best in West Yorks
Presumably the vape shops are like Turkish barbers and candy shops i,e, money laundering premises.
Why presumably? Everyman and his dog vapes, they're open for a reason, I don't vape, but I call in one once every fortnight to do some work and the amount of people who come in and buy them are easily 10-20 people in about a half hour span.

It is well known that such businesses are often used in connection with money laundering. The police have admitted they do not investigate as it takes too much time. Hence the vape shops, Turkish barbers, African cosmetics and wig 'installers' in abundance in every main street. Observation shows many of these shops rarely have customers.......
A lot of History, Great to look at old pictures of Dewsbury, shops railways Mills
......... But now!!!!! The centre needs serious cash investment. But it seems almost too far gone. Hanging eaton/Shaw Cross best parts on the out skirts. We go to Ossett or Wakefield centre. What a shame what its come to. Id love to go down to Dewsbury centre and be proud. Have a good afternoon shopping, eating but you can't. Not sure what else to say. Depressing.....just keep driving through! Glum.
Bargoed town centre in Wales is much the same. Once a thriving town called " The metropolis of the valleys", Bargoed is now a ghost town. Empty shops. High level of unemployment.
hate to see beer wasted but the whole place is shit like the beer
Was hard to leave it. Would of been ill if i had it 🤣
The irony of the burka walking past while on the "why" subject. Pubs and clubs are fucked in areas like that!💥🇬🇧..stand to!
Also the fact that beer is so expensive.. everything has been designed to make this so expensive so people will either buy elsewhere or do without.
I clocked that. And I thought ‘state of that’ just shows why country’s on slippery slope innit.
I think if you want proper Guinness you have to travel to Ireland; the toxic pint - there's no way they wouldn't run the pipes out fully. Great vid. 🍺
Going to have to mate! Cheers pal
I used to deliver to the market twice a week in the early 90s always busy.
Atleast try and split the G bro
Need 2 for it....more of a game
@@honestplaces 😅
That lass in the second pub to her fella "I dont wanna be babysitting you today" 😁
🤣 classic
Did you try the WestRiding pub at the train station or walk abit further away to the Leggars?
2:48 - is that some kind of Stormtrooper/Jawa cosplay?
Seems like it might be fun!
The pubs use to be packed in the 80s and 90s but now the area is mainly muslims and they don't drink, the shops and market were the best too , the council needs to stop all the gambling and vape shops as they bring the place down, the wool merchants who's money built Dewsbury would turn in their graves if they could see it now, ps don't give up faith in God, he will give you a better Guinness next time.😎
🤣 i hope god does serve me well. Cheers pal
It's the fault of the mill owners in the first place for importing cheap labour from India and Pakistan.
