My wife is from this area. She took me to visit her family early on in the relationship and told me it's lovely little slice of Yorkshire... fuck me, I had to wipe my shoes comming out the supermarket... and that's saying something as I grew up in blackpool.
The number of pubs in Ravensthorpe has declined significantly in the past two decades, with the Ravenswarf Hotel being the sole remaining establishment. Mirfield, the neighboring town, has some right boozers! The navigation and the flower pot being the most outstanding! Thanks for this video! Nice little surprise
I got the train from Greenfield to Mirfield and was gonna walk to Marsden down the canal and go a few pubs! Missed Mirfield accidentally and had to walk back from Ravensthope. Thought I was back in Oldham, not surprised there's no pubs when I looked around. Navigation is a nice pub though went in there. Loads of good pubs in Slaithwaite and Marsden too.
Agreed, there's a few pubs gone in Mirfield past 30 years but we've still got plenty compared to most towns, as well as the ones you've mentioned there's ...The Railway, Airdale Heifer, Pear Tree, Saville Arms, Shoulder Of Mutton, The Plough, Dusty Miller
Dewsbury and Batley used to have lots of cracking pubs and clubs. It's a totally different clientele to cater for now. Around 90% of the pubs in Batley have closed down in the last 20 years or so.

In majority Muslim areas yes probably as the locals don’t drink. But most pubs can’t handle the onslaught of supermarket alcohol bargins. It’s a really shit time for a pub at the moment.

yep. same as a lot of the old drinking towns in the west mids. my town had about 25 boozers all within a mile or so of one another. now there's about 4. shocking really!
Yep, the first thing they tend to do is get jobs in the Local Authority's planning department, who being public sector are forced to hire a minimum quota of minorities, and see if their colleagues can be bribed by much wealthier rellies with portfolios of 12-20 properties into converting pubs into flats. Been quite a few landlords who have quietly reported they and their families being threatened if they don't sell up to Muslim (or Muslim-connected) developers.
Not quite, of the 2021 census, Dewsbury's religious makeup was 46.4% Muslim, 28.9% Christian, 23.7% No Religion, and has small Hindu and Sikh communities
