Janine is amazing. We were classmates at Cook College, the Ag school at Rutgers, in the 70s and she was passionate and brilliant about science and nature then.

These undertakings should address the problem of the *high-modernist authoritarian failure formula.* See A Big Little Idea Called Legibility on Ribbonfarm, www.ribbonfarm.com/2010/07/26/a-big-little-idea-called-legibility/ which succinctly explains _James C. Scott’s fascinating and seminal book,_ *_Seeing Like a State: How Certain Schemes to Improve the Human Condition Have Failed._* Basically the argument is _the map is not the territory,_ and we must be careful not to impose a simplification of reality through our modeling. If we base decision-making in complex systems on flawed premises we can be led way astray. Jack actually touches on the topic a little. I believe a wide vista of possibility is ahead of us - now that we have more processing power to crunch more high res models, but it's essential to be weary of the "here be dragons" areas: high-modernist authoritarian failure modes.

Janine is brilliant, but don't give too much credit to Dawkins, we are imitators, not copying machines. Memes obviously resonate with people because ideas no doubt compete with each other in a sense, but the metaphor was coined in his Selfish Gene and is synonymous with the now outdated gene centric view of evolution. Dawkins has joked in the past about poor design in nature such as backwardly-wired retinas, so its doubtful he's any friend to biomimicy. I hope I'm wrong, but really just don't want people going to his books for all the answers on biology because people won't find them. EO Wilson is a much better biologist. As is Frans due Waal and of course Janine..
