  • In this video I give you the condensed version of building a stove hearth and other cabin updates....a condensed version because I lost a full 4-5 days worth of footage!!! Regardless, I still get to show you some impressive shots I managed to capture since the loss and show you exactly where I am in the Off-Grid Cabin Build
    Thanks for tuning in,

    Beautiful job on the Hearth and mantle. Somedays modern technology is just a pain in the arse. Glad you were able to save some pictures for us and for you as well of the building of the hearth. I hope some day you build a staircase to the roof so you don't have to climb a ladder every time you need to clean off the solar panels, especially in the winter when its super cold. Give the pups a pet for us and tell Mel that her colours in the kitchen are pretty (teal coffee maker etc), take care, and stay warm, until next time.

    Lithium iron phosphate batteries such as the Bluetti are the way to go. Charging 0-100% doesn’t hurt longevity as much, more cycles, no cobolt, less risk of fire and cheaper too.
    I have a 100ah for my trailer and love it. Base model Tesla’s come with them, they are heavier and less energy dense but still substantially lighter than my lead acid deep cycle.

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors

    I watch a ton of off grid channels as an off grid person myself . I’m always looking for ways to make my cabin better. I know lots of channels are sponsored by Bluetti. How long will it power your place ? Also what is the washer AB’s dryer? Thanks

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว

      The bluetti length of power per day depends completely on the sun. If it’s sunny, with the 1900 watts of panels I have, it stays up on 100% (or thereabouts). If it’s cloudy, I can go about two days, depending on whether or not we wash clothes. The washer and dryer consume most energy at about 1000 watts continuous when two of the machines are running simultaneously. The washer and dryer are a GE product (combo). The dryer uses propane for heat

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes they can run into the septic tank. However I was concerned about the long run from my kitchen sink all the way to my septic line, specifically to free up in the winter time on such a long travel. I had the travel and I had the container so I went for it. All working out this far 👍

    Your place is coming along nicely Chuck.Thanks for the updates.
    I was wondering if you will answer a some questions for me on the performance of the Blaze King stove so far this winter. What are your burn times and wood consumption? Do you fill it once a day? What type of wood are you burning? How many square feet are you heating and how is your place insulated? Do you use the fan on the stove or do you have enough radiant heat coming off the stove?
    You mentioned that you installed the propane heater for times when you are away from the house, so you don't use it at all ? the wood stove provides enough heat on it's own?
    I have an Arada Farringdon 16 Catalyst stove and am thinking of replacing it with a Blaze King Princess 32. I'm in Debert Nova Scotia, so your winter might be a little harsher than mine.
    Thanks Arch

    • @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors
      @ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi arch
      Burn times are incredibly long, especially if it’s a ‘warmer’ day out (-10 Celsius). Ok this days, I will only fuel the stove twice during the day, and once before bed. I never have to refuel in the middle of the night, even if it’s -40! I’m estimating my wood consumption is cut at least 1/3
      I am burning dry spruce. Spruce is ‘middle of the line’ when it comes to heat delivery compared to other woods we have here.
      My cabin is 1000 sqft. 8” logs r28 equivalent) with R32 in the attic
      I use radiant heat, although I just received the internal fan system and will either install it when it warms up more or early next fall (I can’t install while using the stove 24/7)
      I have a propane heater but have only used it a couple times. Basically there were two mornings when it was -55 with windchill factor, so I turned it in for about 20 mins just to accelerate the room temperature while I was waiting for the wood stove to reach its optimal temp after I refilled it. I used it another time when I was away on a trip for two weeks and it assisted in heating the cabin. I actually purchased three more smaller ones as I had no idea how my place would fare in extreme temps, but have decided they aren’t even necessary.
      Hope this helps

      @@ChuckPorterEverythingOutdoors Thanks for the reply. What all have you done for insulation in the floor and the skirt around the crawl space?

      @@FarewellAcres I used 1” styrofoam SM underneath my laminate/vinyl flooring sand used the same around my skirting. It is shown in some earlier videos of the cabin build. Worked really well this far. Underneath my cabin stayed above freezing all winter. No frozen pipes 👍

    Beautiful job done on the cabin. I guess it wasn't very cheap to have everything that you have installed. Can't wait to see what's next.

      It wasn’t as bad as I originally thought actually. I got my cabin kit at a very nice price. A lot of appliances etc I had at my old cabin. I bought extra lumber at wholesale price. And surprisingly plumbing materials are not as expensive as the rest of building supplies. I was quite happy. I also look at my monthly savings now by living off grid and the financial benefit is immense.

      Here is the heater link. It’s vent free so I’d only recommend using it for short periods at a time or while you’re away. That’s when I use it. www.amazon.ca/dp/B07YBQZ5JJ/?tag=chuckporterev-20

      Hey bob. It’s called eco fan and it’s made by carframo. I’ve had it for close to ten years now. A slight hum when it’s turning real fast but I always recall that being there.
