it's very interesting. Karajan rehearses the aria of Tamino with Rendall but his only performance with Rendall was for the Te Deum of Bruckner (which is published on dvd by DG). There is no recording or performance with Rendall. So y there were rehearsing it? Interesting.

This is very telling! I've always been an lifelong admirer of Karajan, but this footage shows karajan at his worst. Seeing him conduct Mahler 5th is painful to watch and to hear. I think that he was corrupted by power completely by this point. This footage look to be from around 1980 or slightly earlier.

The fact is that Karajan, as his most veteran players would explain later, had a sensational knowledge of the values his orchestra had, and foremostly the TRUST he had for them! - And he knew exactly what to expect from them and how to ask for what he wanted (!): a beautifully velvety invisible singing line all through. His conducting is totally relaxed, unobtrusive, suggestive and still he was in full command! You can "see" - and foremostly HEAR what this enormously practical man needed, cos if the conductor doesn't first of all LISTEN to what his orchestra gives him, then what the hell is the point being in front of them at all? Afterall, they had been working together since at least 4 decades! Yes, he doesn't put a theatrical display of waving his hair madly and "looking like a conductor", DISTURBING them, as way too many over-hyped pretenders do now a days! This clip is a lesson. Period. Eunuchs can go and jerk-off to Dudamel & co instead. Enough said.

Yes it’s Ozawa, his assistant at the time. Ozawa also conducted part of the memorial concert one month after Karajan s death, in Salzburg.a very emotional moment for everyone.

Ich bin mir ziemlich sicher, dass Gustav Mahler die CD Aufnahme von Karajan gefallen hätte. Sie wird nicht umsonst als eine der besten dieses Werkes angesehen. Finde ich interessant, wie viele Menschen sich anmaßen zu wissen, wie ein bestimmtes Werk zu spielen und interpretieren sei.
