  • The rubber belt in my oil skimmer was cut from an old inner tube, and it has gone as baggy as clown pants. Time to replace it with something that works and get the skimmer back into service.

Gday Alan, the new belt works great, the inner tube is still ok on mine so far but I might grab some rubber and change it anyway, top job mate, cheers

Thanks Matty. The original belt never worked as well as the new one because it had too much shape memory from the relatively narrow inner tube, and the centre of the belt didn't make proper contact with the scraper. I also fixed a couple of other issues - knurled the centre of the drive roller to stop belt slippage and cut a keyway in the drive shaft. Didn't film that because it wasn't relevant to making the new belt. Anyway it did turn out as well as I could have wished and will hopefully give a long service life.

Thanks Graedon - but Matty gets the credit for the idea as I basically copied his skimmer.
      Cheers, Alan.

Is there any belts that i can buy ready to attach and what type should i get

The only off-the-shelf belts that I could find are exercise resistance belts/bands. These are easily found on-line and probably at large spots stores. However, I do not know how the material these things are made from would stand up to long term immersion in oily water. Making your own belt isn't really that hard and you can use neoprene rubber, as I did, or nitrile rubber which is even more resistant to oils and solvents.
      Cheers.

@@alanshomeworkshop I have to stick synthetic rubber (poly) belt. Is gorilla super glue suitable ?

@@acreations799 Sorry, I don't know. However, the glue is quite cheap so I suggest you make up a test piece and check it out on your material.

Alan could you put a cock on the bottom of your bottle to drain of the cutting fluid?
I believe you missed my comment on the last video, I think it could be helpful to you.

Good idea Kit. I had planned on recovering the coolant by emptying the bottle from the bottom using a tube and Venturi suction but your idea is simpler.
      Cheers, Alan.
