  • I got a question today about what to do if a SmartKey cylinder has been set to a random key or the key has been lost. This is a quick overview of what to do to manually reset the cylinder without resorting to specialist tools.
And yes, I know I used the word "carefully" a lot in this video, but being careful is important when you are doing this sort of thing.

I spent 2 hours this morning with this delicate but rewarding process. You saved me from buying a new lock. I attempted to change my locks and messed up somewhere. Neither of the two keys worked so I had to do something immediately. Your videos are the best❤❤❤

Thanks for this video. I had two locks on a new-to-us house that did not "SmartKey" correctly. I went to purchase a new deadbolt and was stunned at the $40+ price. I looked at several videos and started the reset process. I kept hitting a stump when I tried to put the lock back together. Then, I found your video. The clarity of your instructions and your filming (lighting and focus) solved the issue. I was aligning the wafers too high. Your video clarified where the ridge needed to be aligned. Thank you so much. I now have two operational deadbolts that were about to go to the dump and over $80 saved. Again, thanks.

Thanks a ton for posting. Got a lock "new" that clearly had been returned and the key didn't fit, this solved it pretty quickly, thanks! I'm guessing my revision is newer, there was some sort of retainer for the bar and I didn't actually have to remove the bar, just take off that side and adjust the wafers. Wiggled too much reassembling and clearly got one of the wafers out of alignment, but it worked the 2nd try!.

I learned this by watching another video, then ordered a smartkey lock & smartkey cradle. First I took apart the cylinder like you did, and things just kind of fell apart. This was the best way to learn smartkey reassembly and rekeying.😘
    Thanks for this video.

Thank you so much for this video, it solves my Kwikset Smartkey lock issue. It is ridiculous, a band new lock set, the keys won't work, can't turn at all.

Made me laugh when you dropped the slider housing (as I have done many times). Thanks for tip in key at # 3 depths to make it easier to pull core out. I like pjdambra's comment as a great way to do this easier & faster, no mess!

I simply decode the lock with a gage pin to measure the open gate height of the wafers. Using a set of depth cut keys. Read the lock cut the key and your good to go no disassembling two minute job.

Bonus fun when the wafers tumble out all over the place. It once took me a week to find one of those bloody things.
