The Weiser Smart Key and Kwikset Smart key locks can be opened almost as quick as you can put your key into the lock.
Several manufacturers sell tools to open the Smart Key locks in seconds. The major problem is with little or no training you can open the Smart Key lock with no visible damage to the lock. Several years ago TH-cam had videos on "How To" pick open a brand of bike lock with a Bic pen. The manufacturer had stated the lock was "pick proof" and was forced by bad PR and lots of online videos to recall all the faulty bike locks. Their new and improved locks could no longer be picked quickly by amateurs. Most locks can be defeated and picked if you have been trained and practice every day for months or years, however, this video demonstrates how easy the Smart Key lock can be defeated by anyone.
I am only demonstrating what professional locksmiths have known for years and the information has been available on the Internet for years. The public must know these locks are not secure for protecting your valuables. If you are a victim of a burglar, theft or Break and Enter and no visible sign of entry your insurance company may not pay for any claims. The "Emperor has no Clothes"

I like to do them as a puzzle but never have i ever picked a lock without the owners permission or were my locks. (I once opened the front door for a sheriff's deputy who lived on my block because her babysitter locked herself out with the kids inside. I made sure i heard her voice on the phone and recorded having permission and why

I've been replacing doors and locks for over 35 years. I've never seen a burglar pick a lock. They just kick they door in. Strengthen your doors and frames at their weak points and any good lock will work just fine.
No? never seen a burglar pick a lock, walk in, disable phone lines and power, steal something from you, reconnected said phone lines and power and relock the door? how would you see that my friend? takes literally seconds to disable an alarm system and you have about 35-50 seconds to do it if you use an entry door. Just sayin.

@@spencercable2694 what if you have an alarm with crash and smash protection like frontpoint. As soon as a door or window is breached its too late to destroy the sending unit. The signal has already been transmitted and the monitoring station is waiting on a second signal from the keypad to call off the alarm.
@@angileahbinford7147 well obviously with a system as "sophisticated" As that anybody with half a brain would just use a signal jammer(which can be bought legally, or even made with about 17$) before entering said residence, and continue as said before, you know why you only hear about loud, messy, obnoxious criminals? Because the ones that care about getting into wherever they are getting into PLAN for these things, I promise you the only time you will ever read about a professional thief is when they make a mistake, the media as well as the majority of police agencies do not like regular people knowing how often crimes go unsolved when they have absolutely no leads. Sorry to break it to you, but locks are for honest people, if somebody wants what you have they WILL take it.
@spencercable have you actually researched what it would take to reliably jam a cell phone signal from an alarm. It's wildly complicated and no one in thier right mind is going to go through all that trouble and spend all that money to posses a device that if caught with would result in massive fines and most likely jail time. Not when they can simply kick in a door, grab whatever's in site take off. You've apparently been watching way too many James bond movies, because in real life the situation you described never happens.

It’s belong to the past. Now Kwikset reinforce their Smartkey so this method will probably not work but it’s still a cheap quality type of lock and I as a professional locksmith not recommend it but a real High Security Lock.

You are doing the public a service Mr. Locksmith. Don't let these hating locksmiths who probably charge people over $200 to change their smart key locks to a new key get you down. The only result of your video is that people will wise up to kwikset smart key and wise up to shady locksmiths.

The tool used in the video is made by Major Manufacturing (KTT-4 Kwik Torque Tool). I use vice grips instead of the supplied handle.

I have used the Bic Pen tops numerous times for different types of locks. Working in trades, the Gas Company had these locks they put on Gas Meters that could be hammered off. But they were very quickly and safely removed with a Bic Pen top.

This video is from NINE YEARS AGO. Kwikset has "beefed up" their Smart Key locks (several redesigns) since this video was first posted. I think Major Locksmith Supply had a T-handle force tool for this lock some years back, but had discontinued it, as it could no longer force these locks open...
Certainly a flathead screwdriver/baby sledgehammer/vice grips will work on this lock---even now---but you can simply drill thru the face of the lock on both sides (in line with where the retention screws are), to pop it out...and not risk door damage (as you possibly would with the screwdriver/hammer/vice grips method)...
This is just so sad people is able to just come into your house anytime they want to picking people locks 🔐 and nowadays people are showing people how to pick locks into people houses 🏘️ a damn shame people is not safe anymore no matter where we are in this life..in our homes you're not safe in the streets we're not safe 🙏 at the stores we're not safe just wonna know why would anybody be on TH-cam showing people how to pick someone locks into there houses..one how to get into someone house..everybody is already in danger everyday as it is..just because people know how to pick people locks to there houses and even cars 🚗..don't mean you have to put it out here in this whole wide world on TH-cam like this..let dangerous people figure 💩💩💩💩 out for themselves basically if you have a sick minded person wanting to kill someone well this is how you pick locks SMFUCKINHO..THIS WORLD 🌎 IS GETTING WORSE AND WORSER

Well, unfortunately, if someone wants to break in your house they probably ain’t gonna pick the lock. A size 12 boot is a helluva lot faster than the best professional locksmith when it comes to gaining entry. And I can promise you that 99% of criminals that are breaking in houses are not better/faster at picking locks than professional locksmiths!!! So, if you really wanna stay safe then sure up your hinges and door frames!!! Also, a big dog. A big dog will work wonders!!!

If somebody wants to rob your house all they have to do is kick in the door or break a window. I don't think any potential housebreaker was just waiting for this video to begin his life of crime. And how does he profit from people using other locks? Did he short Spectrum stock? Your financial reasoning escapes me. but I just realized your comment was 7 years ago. Well I'll leave this up anyway for anyone else who thinks criminals are just waiting for this juicy tip.
I for one am glad to see this. I was thinking about getting one due to the convenience of being able to rekey quickly and being able to leverage that as a way of providing temporary keys. Based on what I just saw, I'll not be going with the SmartKey lines. Schlage stopped making the SecureKey lines, probably for the same reason.
So no, he is not showing people how to break and enter. He is showing homeowners how to protect themselves by NOT buying insecure products. Now you know!
Well I guess breaking into my house is fairly simple, if someone really wants to. It's the breaking back out that's going to be the tough part. I have insurance if I'm not home and I have insurance if I am home, if you catch my meaning. Very nice video, thanks for the information.

Locks keep honest people honest that's it. Regardless of cost one swift kick and your in.
Name 1 honest person you know that will steal from you if you leave your house unlocked. If they do, THEY AREN'T HONEST. If you don't care about your security, don't lock your door. If you do, buy a decent lock. Don't make excuses that make no sense.

The Schlage B560 deadbolt, in my opinion, is one of the best "bang for your buck" deadbolts out there. Highly recommend it. Also, reinforcing your door jamb is a must if you want to slow someone down.

I have several of the Major bypass tools and I have not broken one. However, a few locksmith friends have broken the tool. The Major bypass tool in hardened steel and brittle. When opening the Smart Key locks apply steady turning pressure in the unlock direction. If you apply sideways pressure the tool may break.

My lock has a key that just spins and the combo won't unlock it so I am looking for answers. If the key spins complete turns, Can you still use this to bump the lock?
Can you recommend a specific Brand, Make, Model for locks on rental properties that need to be re-keyed for every new tenant?
I heard the same so I picked up a new Smart Key lock from the local Hardware store and defeated the lock with the "force tool" Note: no external signs of entry and the key still worked, however, the Smart Key function to rekey the lock was broken.
Also, I a new 20 Floor apartment building has Smart Key deadbolts and I have used the "force tool" to open 3 condos where the customer had lost the keys.
I will update if and when I find any changes.
Holy cow. Someone gained entry fast! And from the looks and functionality of their 'Smart' lock, the homeowner would be "None the WISER' their 'Weiser lock had easily been 'lobotomized' in less than a minute...THAT IS until they go in and find all their valuables have taken a permanent vacation.
Makes for a vivid example to the meaning of 'false security'.

Does this work the latest version of the smart key locks? If the entry is destructive that's OK with me. I just want immediate and obvious indication of forced entry.
I understand exactly what you mean there's alot of people out there that are breaking into homes and leaving no signs of forced entry I would call them thieves but actually there much worse for lack of a better word let's just say private contractors and they are really the scum of society. Keep in mind that most people do not even have a true strike plate on their door jamb. Most home invasions wouldn't waste time picking a lock when they could kick your door down in one attempt. This is common among all lock brands, especially in new construction. Consumers should be more concerned about adding a strike plate first and then how easy a lock is to pick or bump.

NOW I KNOW, NOT to buy one of these types of locks. So THANK YOU Mr. Locksmith for the Information. By the way, I know Firefighters who are trained to Pick Locks so they don't have to Break Down Doors. LOTS of Professions need to know this technique in their line of work. just stopped me from buying a kwikset 980, so it is doing some good.
The general public doesn't realize it, but the bad guys *already* know about things like this. Same with computer security. You find a vulnerability, you let everyone know because the bad guys are already using it. Keeping it a secret only gives people a false sense of security. In the computer security business we call this "security through obscurity", and it is one of the worst kind to rely on.
He also teaches you how to break into just about any lock set in all his other videos. So I don't agree with his channel. But like everybody else says. The front door is not the main entry port for most burglars.
Could have saved $35 on this lock.. Amazon and eBay sells a remote control deadbolt lock starting at $87 and comes with 4 remote controls and a connection cord in case u don't promptly replace your battery so u won't get locked out!!..👍
I'm still ok with this lock in general though. It requires a non-standard tool to bypass its security. The other common locks out there can be opened using a standard lock picking kit or bump keys. I imagine the average person who wants to pick locks to gain entry into a home would carry "standard" tools with them, not something very specific to Kwikset Smartkey. All good though, I imagine somebody determined enough will find a way through most consumer grade locks. Only those crazy expensive ones that you usually can't pickup at the local Lowes or Home Depot, seem to be really good. I guess you get what you pay for? But it still seems like there should be a good decent consumer grade model you can pick up in most hardware stores that won't break the bank and is protected against most picking/bumping/forced-entry techniques. At least the Kwikset Smartkey is protected against the common techniques.
Going back to this video. Have you found anything for a Kwikset SmartCode 916 Touchscreen Deadbolt Control4 model?

Is the Kwikset 980-15S, which has an ANSI Security rating of 1, but is a smartkey type of lock susceptible to picking/forcing open by this tool?
All Smart key locks tested are have a major security flaw are vulnerable. Also, Smart Key locks can be picked.
Mr. Locksmith the smartkey have function to warn the tenant about the lock status through the software and i believe if you broke the "smart key" function in a smart key, it will send a warning to the tenant through the app, or if he integrated it with the alarm system, it will turn on the alarm and wake the neighbors, right?
have you tested the pick the smart key without noticing the tenant through the app?
junktainment The smart key locks I have seen have not been "net" connected. Just seperate locks that let users change their keys. I don't think it is widespread knowledge as our locksmith saw them on one of our tenant's doors and he didn't say anything about it (the tenant changed the lock himself)..

To stay one step ahead of the burglars you have to upgrade your security. Thirty-five years ago you left your doors unlocked, years later you locked your door locks which had a key in the handle, then had to install 1/2 deadbolts, better doors, 1" deadbolts, door reinforcers, alarm systems, High Security Pick resistant locks, the list goes on.

Lock manufactures apparently don't know how to improve their products, so they pretend that their products making house owners being safe. Now, we know most if not all door locks aren't break in proof! Should have additional security systems to deter the break in!

You can do the same thing with a flathead screwdriver and vice grip pliers.
After spending $1750 to put the most secure locks on all exterior doors, I learned that 75% of break-ins in my area are accomplished using a rock or other object laying around the yard to break a window and come on in. From there, they simply open the door and leave with the goods. Do you have any tips that make my locksmith investment as smart as a SmartKey?

Hi, I just picked up a new Kwikset Smart Key deadbolt and the lock can still be defeated in seconds. No major redesign in my sample Smart Key lock.
If Kwikset can send me a new version or tell me where I can buy I will re-evaluate it.
Note: Kwikset reps have stated to me "no problem with smart key lock." So why the rumour of a redesign?

The Schlage B560 or B660 Deadbolt with the C123 Keyway is a great lock and very difficult to pick.
If you want a "Pick Resistant" Schlage get the UL Rated "Primus" Deadbolt. (Schlage Primus is the lock on my house).
Are the Grade 1 Weiser smartkey locks harder to pick/break?

Yes. Basically, "you made a mistake by trying to open the wrong door". But let's not forget the opportunist thief. Locks keep them out too. But the determined felon ain't gonna be stopped; unless, of course, the victim is lying in wait with a shotgun. The thief will get in, but he won't get out....

Nothing wrong with a smartkey lock. Its vulnerable, just like regular locks. The trick isn't to thwart criminals, it's to deter them. Lights on over your front entryways. Motion detector lights over the back ones. A decent home alarm system. And, my personal favourite; Rottweilers. Pretty hard to pick a lock with those two barking their damn heads off. And kick the door in? Yeah. Try it.
you should have a video to show how to reset the lock in the event somebody screws up the steps when setting the new key.

I strongly believe Professional locksmiths have a duty to warn their customers and the public that Weiser or Kwikset Smart Keys locks are extremely vulnerable to very simple bypass method(s) to open the lock. If you fail to do so, you may be held liable if they (your customers) suffer a loss based upon the bypass of these locks.

Apparently in another video that someone else had published... Kwikset/Weiser did redesign their sidebar mechanism on their SmartKey system... although the same sloppy manufacturing tolerances and limited (6-depth increments per key-cut) still remains, along with the same, open/unrestricted basic key-way profile or section...
Still a mediocre product. There's much better options out there when it comes to protecting your assets.

Paulpro PP In the past Baldwin was ok but now I wouldn't recommend a Baldwin lock. Most of Baldwins are now Smart Key.
I can pick the older Mul-T-Locks with a special pick in 2-30 minutes.
I have not picked the newest version of the Mul-T-Lock. (not yet but trying!)

Don't waste your time trying to force one. Kwikset Smartkey has 5 generations of locks that have improved so this cannot be done anymore. I use to use this tool as a locksmith on these locks. it worked a number of times until I ran into one in 2014 that broke the tool. I bought another thinking my old one just wore out, but the tool snapped the first time. I noticed some threads on locksmith forums about other locksmith complaining. The lock suppliers stopped stocking them due to too many returns.
So don't worry about the lock being compromised anymore, (unless you get an earlier generation one). What you should know is these locks are garbage. They fail. Not a matter of if but when. The lock will work fine but when you rekey it a "pin", but more like a "wafer" gets hung up preventing a key from turning, making the lock garbage.

mine as well, I actually made my own in 2015 and it hasn't faild yet, I literally just did this yesterday aftertoon to a BRAND NEW $700k home as the real estate agent left the keybox with the keys inside the garage 😂

I love the haters. Their "ignorance is bliss" attitude is so hilarious. "Security" is a constant battle to stay ahead of the criminals, whether it relates to the internet or a lock on your door. Knowledge is power. When you purchase a new product to replace an older one, you expect the new product to be better than the old one. Back in the day, I'm sure opening a lock by brute force was easier than it is today. The manufacturers have spent a lot of time designing features to prevent brute force attacks, things even a mischievous teenager is capable of doing. Once manufacturers felt like they had achieved a level of brute force prevention, they started focusing on anti-picking features that only a professional criminal or a locksmith would be capable of doing, thus increasing the level of expertise that is required to defeat the security. So if a manufacturer takes 2 steps backward, and you are paying more but getting less, wouldn't you want to know about it? If you want to be truly secure, you have to educate yourself to at least "know that criminals know how to do something", even if you don't know how to actually do it yourself. But when you see how easy it is, warning alarms should be going off in your head because you were not aware of how vulnerable you actually are and have been. And regarding the selling of a rudimentary tool to prove the concept, your professional criminal can fashion a device like this in no time at all, anonymously. Nonetheless, it's still a bad idea to actually sell such a device without validating credentials, though it's probably already available on eBay from dozens of sellers.
This is just like the internet. In case you guys missed Matthew Conley's comment from 2 years ago entitled "Your mind will be blown when you learn about Pen Testing." "Pen Testing" is short for penetration testing where a web site hacks it's own site, or hires someone to do it. The goal of the procedure is to assess whether all the bugs and loopholes, that hackers already know about, have been fixed. So to accomplish this, the web site owner needs to "think like a hacker". And likewise, if you want your property to be truly secure, you need to "think like a criminal" or hire someone to do this for you. So this might involve a little self-education.

+Scottl1111 Half right, but still flawed thinking. If a man can make it a man can break it. You can make thermite and eat through a foot thick steel wall if you really want to, so in the end no thief is going to be kept out. You can have the best lock in the world, but guess what? If I have a baseball bat I'll smash your window out! Unless you have bars on your window then not much will stop me from getting inside. Ram the door down, sneak through an upstairs window maybe, enter through the basement if the lock is old, there's a dozen ways to skin a cat. I'd say the biggest thing you need to acknowledge is that if someone wants in your house they're going to get it.
Even if you live in a gated community with patrols, have motion sensor alarms and alarms tied to the windows and doors that can be powered when the power is cut plus batter proof doors and specially fortified walls it's not hard to get into a home at all... I don't know about everyone else, but I don't have an extra 500,000 spending on turning my house into a mini White House.
Speaking of the White House, remember when that guy just walked into the party and wasn't on the guest list? Yeah... not even a million dollars worth of security can stop somebody if they want in.
+Jesse Crandle You are correct, there is nothing that you can do to prevent someone from entering a property if they are determined, except maybe a deterrent to make them weight the risk versus consequences/lack of reward. But the point of a door lock is to make it difficult for the less hardened criminal, from entering (with only a screw driver and wrench).

WOW, was thinking of getting one of these, now I will not...BUT I am impressed you show people how to break and enter. I know you are really trying to show people the flaws with this Lockset, but still. Any way the good news is you made up my mind on this lockset.

Nobody should rate their product based on assumptions. A lock should be rated by effort put in by real world testing using whatever means real lock pickers and bypassers would choose.

Jean-Francois Bessette I know this is a 3 year old dead comment but on off chance noone ever gave you an answer or others are curious here's my thoughts on why. It's because "Smart locks" don't use solid driver and key pins like a normal lock, so they are alot weaker to a brute force attack. These locks are "rekey-able" on the fly without replacing any internal components. In a simplified explanation of how they use thin wafers instead of solid pins so you can turn the cylinder 90 degrees insert a shim into the second slot next to the keyway remove the shim and old key insert new key and flip 180 degrees the other direction to set the new bidding.
The reason these locks are so susceptible to this type of attack is that ability to be rekeyed without swapping internal parts requires them to have 6+ shear lines per pin. A normal off the shelf "dumb lock" has 1 shear line per pin because they use solid brass or steel pins. This brute force attack torques the cylinder, forcing the wafers apart creating invalid shear lines allowing it to spin causing some internal damage to the wafers but not little to no evident external signs it was bypassed and without causing the lock to break entirely.
A decent "dumb lock" can also be defeated by brute force but requires much more effort because of the force needed to either break the pins or lock body. When that happens the lock will be completely trashed internally either frozen open or can be operated with anything that will fit in the keyway. With noticeable damage to the outside

Master Key SmartLocks are available .. they have two keyways.
Do you have any ideas for combination gun safes? I reset the combo on mine and haven’t been able to get in since.
the top keyway take a special key ... it should have came with the lock .. to my knowledge blanks are not available.

"All cylinders have 'by-pass' techniques (i.e. lock picking, lock bumping, drilling, etc.) - SmartKey is the most secure residential product on the market. The 'force' tool is only sold to licensed locksmiths and is manufactured with high strength heat treated tool grade steel; not typical materials that can be produced at home and even with this material the tool is prone to breaking during use.
Kwikset has made improvements to components within the cylinder making it more resistant to this type of attack. We believe that the lock on the video had previously been compromised in some way. Our lengthy testing and experience with trying this tool on our SmartKey locks does not yield the same ease of opening as the video would have you believe. We do not believe it is a proper representation of our products."
+Terry Wysocki Yup it's an old video but I'm a locksmith and smartkey is junk. They recombinate(lock you out) occasionally and there are other ways to open them than this forced method. As for most secure residential product on the market? Did you expect them to tell you otherwise? They've made millions of these they need to unload. Ask educated people who don't have a vested interest in selling them but must work with them and they will tell you they are junk. I can pick them open fairly rapidly but I won't be explaining how in this forum. There are enough problems associated with them. Only sold to locksmiths they said? A key blank cut properly and a screwdriver work as well. I'm calling BS.

I know you posted this 2 yrs ago but the comment you made about the hardened tool steel is bogus. "high strength heat treated tool grade steel; not typical materials that can be produced at home". Thats total garbage. Tool steel can be found in simple engineer files or similar tools (wrenches, drill bits, hammers, saw blades, etc.) then forged with a propane torch and hammer, quenched with olive oil, and tempered in an toaster oven to the desired rockwell hardness. maybe not shaped into the tool your talking about without a mill, but the materials are readily available in nearly most homes. Hardened "tool steels like 1095,1085, D2, 52100, A1, and other high carbon steels are found everywhere in our homes, car parts, small engines and machinery,, guns, tools, door locks, lawn mower blades, kitchen knives, the list goes on. Anything that takes constant high wear and tear, holds a sharp edge , or is required to be used to shape other materials through cutting or blunt force like a hammer or chisel.
Is the regular Kwikset 660 the old style pin and tumbler deadbolt you're referring to that still takes some skill to open? Thanks in advance for taking the time to reply to this...
