Video allowed me to rekey my back door so all my locks work with the same key. Honestly, I had to dismantle down to the wafers several times to get it working but in the end got my old Kwiklock to work with my home key. All doors working with one key makes life easier. Took me a few hours to get it done. Being retired I thought it was good work to do for my education and keep my brain working on puzzles. Couldn't have done it without the video. Thanks!
This video was invaluable for two reasons. My SmartLock failed and the key wouldn't work after working for a month. Kwikset sent me a replacement cylinder and removal tool. The instructions showed inserting the rekey tool much further than it wanted to go so I stopped thinking something was wrong. Your video showed me what happens with that sleeve when the tool is inserted and I realized it was in fact working and the tool would never go in as far as the instruction sheet showed. Your video also allowed me to take the failed cylinder apart and reset it to my key. Now I know how to fix a cylinder if it fails. The question in the back of my mind is, what caused the key to quit working and when will it happen again. At least I know how to reset it now. Thx a million.
Andrew, this video just saved my friend $250 Canadian dollars cause his attempt at rekeying a SmartKey cylinder failed miserably and the lock locked up! I was able to get the core out of the deadbolt body, take it apart thanks to this video and reset it to the actual housekey during reassembly, works perfectly. Thank you for the concise instructions and excellent camera placement to catch where all the parts go correctly!
The residents in Mesa AZ are fortunate to have Andrew. I took a set of these locks to Home Depot in Nashville Tennessee where they were purchased to have them re-keyed. After making three trips back by to pick them up they informed me they could not be re-keyed without the key that fit. Thank you Andrew. I knew it could be done and thanks to your video even I can do it!
There is a bunch of these on TH-cam, but yours is possibly the most concise and clear. I had two messed up Weiser locks. The instructions they provide for the Smartkey are either incomplete or wrong. After some experimentation I found that I could only rekey them if the special tool was inserted from the time I had the original key in 90 degrees until I had put in the new key. I had messed up two locks trying to follow the included instructions. One was a newer style that is different than shown in this video. The side bar was held into the slider with two spring clips and the springs are on top of the side bar rather than underneath. The basic principal worked the same though. You just had to remove the spring clips from the slider and do more fiddly work to get it back together.
Thank you for the video. it was a big help! I'd watched a similar video but the locksmith forgot to slow down for the inexperienced viewers. This time it worked because no steps were skipped over.😃
Thank you for this detail video! I found two locks in the garage, no keys. With your help, we rekeyed them with our spare keys. Now we can use them somewhere.
Awesome video! Very informative, I thought I was going to have to call Kwikset. It only took me two tries to get it to work. Thanks for posting this. Well done!
This was exactly the video I needed. Thank you! If you did what I did and somehow made a mistake while re-keying, you can try to use the same key you ended with and just pull it out/up/down in small increments. It may work in one position. If so, turn it 90 degrees to the right insert/remove the smartkey and start over. When that fails, this video shows exactly what to do!
Kwikset would not open with the key I've used for 4 years. Don't know how or why but with your video I was able to get it working again. Thank you very much!
Thank you so much for this information. I was on the verge of insanity looking for my lost key. Thankfully, your in depth instructions allowed me to re-key to a key that operates another lock in the house.
Thank you! Something must’ve been wrong with the key cradle I was using. I re-keyed it twice but once I pulled out the key, it wouldn’t work. So I had to re-key it manually and it worked! Hallelujah!
Andrew is the man ....completed this intricate well detailed kwikset rekey on first attempted. Hardest thing was holding the parts together during reassemble. Thank you so much in taking time out to but this video out for us to leverage!
I know this is an older video but I had lost the key and was able to rekey the lock and it went smoothly thanks to your video! Appreciate you taking the time to make this tutorial!
I'm not a professional, just a DIY'er that installed a Kwickset Smartkey deadbolt with a key that didn't work. Your instructions were spot on! Got the deadbolt keyed to my house key in about 30 minutes. Thank you for your precise tutorial!
Such a huge help! I messed up my lock, and with your easy to follow instructions, I got it working again. Never would have thought I could fix it myself if I didn't have this video to walk me through it.
Hi Andrew, thank you so much!! I followed this video and successfully made my ONE WEEK OLD lock work again!! This video is very easy to follow. I could see each step very clearly. I was going to either buy a new deadbolt or call a locksmith for help. I am glad I found this video and gave it a shot! Thank you again!
You're awesome! As others have said, I've seen other vids but they didn't make sense. Bought a Kevo and managed to brick it within minutes so that no key worked. Now it's all good!
Moved into new house, the house key we were given did not fit one Weiser deadbolt lock on the side door. It is a smart lock. I just re keyed the lock, thanks Andrew. I now have the only working key to this deadbolt lock.
Thanks for the video! Bought and installed a couple locks and messed up while rekeying. Thought I was going to have to go buy another one but found your video and all is well. Thanks again!
Thank you for this video. It enabled me to rekey a new Kwicset lever handle lock that came with a bad original key. As info this newer lock's sidebar is held in place by two plastic "C" bands with a tiny spring under each.
Tried a different video that didn’t explain nearly as good as you. I was about to give up and came across your video which answered all my questions and now I have successfully rekeyed my lock to match the key to another entry door.
Thanks!! Saved my butt. Rekeyed 3 locks, 2 were the standard rekey with the Kwikset kit, opened the 3rd and it was the smart lock! You made it as easy as the 1st 2! 👍👍
Thank you so much! I have used many Kwikset Smartkey locks and this is the first time I had one that did not re-key properly. The key that came with the lock didn't work and the key I tried to re-key to did not work. Your video and instructions saved the day!!!
Thank you so much Andrew !!! I reset one of my kwikset cylinders which had been re-programmed and the new key would not work (even with all the tries to find the right part of the key which had been programmed). This video is MAGIC ! Char.
Sweet! Thanks, I got one of those programmable locks and I managed to make it not do anything. Thanks to you and your video I was able to make it work again. With the right key even! Thanks!
Thank you for this great video. With your help, I was able to save 4 locks and a Powerbolt 2. My son bought a home that had no keys and we were able to save all of the locks and rekey them to all work off the same key!!
Thanks for this. I somehow derped the rekey procedure on one (out of four) new locks so that neither the old nor new key would work. With your help I was able to fix it.
I have done that, too. Our local hardware store (no locksmith in town) wanted to sell me a new one as they 'can't be fixed'. Five minutes with this video and I had fixed my mistake. Thanks!
Thank you so much for posting this video. I just replaced all my home locks with the Baldwin quickset locks. I threw away the old keys after rekeying but the front door deadbolt reset did not take properly and I was stuck without a key that worked. With this tutorial the front door deadbolt lock now works with the proper house key.
Excellent video. Saved me like $80. ON the newer locks you do not need to removed the side bar. In fact i don't even now how you would accomplish that as it is held in by two retaining clamps on either side. Regardless of that this only took like 15 minutes from start to finish. THANKS SO MUCH.
I Just started working at a hardware store in the section that rekeys locks and I figured this out the other day on my own. Guess I did everything rite because i did exactly what you did. Go me!!
That worked great. One of my little saw shaped wafers broke. I was able to follow your instructions and get the lock back together, with the key I wanted. I works just fine with 4 instead of 5 pins.
Technically it's more susceptible to picking now but really? I'd take my chances or move out of the neighborhood of I was that concerned because locks don't deter thieves
I use a set of depth keys to read the wafers on top of the assembled Lock. Decode and cut a key to fit. Works great for me. I mark a line on the rekey tool to act as a depth gage to measure the right height of the wafer when it in the correct position.
Great job from one locksmith to another! Cradle tool is the way to go, but this is good knowledge to have in your toolbox. Plus helps to understand exactly what's going on in the lock if you need to troubleshoot.
For the master set smart key system would it be the same thing....im a maintenance guy and we started using these so this was a great video on how to fix them or rekey them so you dont "lose" a lock

Have the Cradle, but prefer the way you show. Ran into house with several Smart Key, Keyed same, took 1 apart, inserted depth key til at same height as a working key to decode. Next time I dig out My Smart Key stuff, while core is out of cylinder, want to try applying pressure to the slider, and see if they can be moved into place with a hook to put slider in the rekey position. Ever try? Thanks
Thanks for the video. question. Are all the wafflers the same size?? Cause they all look the same I manage to fix my lock .they had nber Four of them had a S0 One had S5.
Thanks Andrew.. Somehow you made those parts seem bigger than they actually are.. :) I just moved into a new house where I have six internal doors with smartlocks and no keys.. first one is the Lever Style Tustin Handle.. man those Allen set screws are a bitch when the lock wont turn.. You got me on the right track !! Tustin done.. now for the round style knobs. Thanks!!
Thank you so much this helps greatly now i work at Home Depot and we rekey alot your very thorough on your explanation thanks again and i have subscribe and get notification on new videos
My daughter got the key stuck in the deadbolt tonight. Found your video and had the key out, inserted to rekey it, and installed in less than 30 minutes. I don't know for sure but it looked like when she pulled to get the key out but didn't turn it back to 12 o'clock, she jammed some wafers. Key wouldn't come out and wouldn't turn either.
Oh, and the cylinder with the wafers and pins was VERY hard to remove from the sleeve, also making them think something like a wafer was jamming it. And when I did get the cylinder out of the sleeve, I found wafers falling off the cylinder rather than in the groove. No idea how that is even possible, but now I feel more prepared to tackle other lock issues.
Worked flawlessly the first time without any special tools and only took 5 minutes. DON'T lose the wafers or springs when seperating the two halves of the cylinder. They fall out very easily, so work over a confined area when disassembling it.
Actually, I recently messed up my brand new lock (Weiser Halo / Kwikset) so that neither the new or old key would turn the lock. I took the outside portion with key cylinder off the door. With the new key in the lock, I held the lock with the key pointing down (toward the floor) and with light pressure turning the key, I shook the lock and within seconds was able to turn the new key. Re-installed on door and all was right with the world.
Sounded like it didn't fully reset when you first did it so you were managing to wiggle and jiggle it to get it to open again so you could reset it that's awesome glad you got it fixed.
@@Andrewslockandkey yes, what I had done wrong was put the old key in and turned it 90 degrees clock-wise. I then used the kwikset key, but then turned the old key back to center before I removed the old key. At that point neither key worked.
I'm working on one that has to small black clips that obviously fit over the springs. I cannot get the lock to rekey with them over the springs. Where do they go?
Thanks for the video. I had a cylinder fail when the fingers wore down on the wafer. I pulled the one bad wafer, reset it as per your video and reset it back to the original key. It now works again albeit with on less wafer. Are these wafers available for purchase, I cant find these online (im not sure what they are called) I'd love to put this back to original.

Thank You Very Much,, You are a great teacher
Thanks for the video. I had a cylinder fail when the fingers wore down on the wafer. I pulled the one bad wafer, reset it as per your video and reset it back to the original key. It now works again albeit with on less wafer. Are these wafers available for purchase, I cant find these online (im not sure what they are called) I'd love to put this back to original.
I don't know where to buy just a wafer at. you might be better off trying to find another used lock cylinder and stealing it out of there.
Figured it was a shot, the cylinders are at most 12 dollars.
