I taught it to my third graders at Holy Ghost Catholic School in Albuquerque for the 1992 Christmas program, and as we were leaving the front of the church, the parish priest took me aside and told it was his very favorite song. I'll be 78 this November, and "He Ain't Heavy" is still on my rather long list of favorite songs.
I too did not understand the meaning of this song back in 69 but as I spent more and more time in my 20 year Air Force career, the meaning became as clear as a bell. Whether you are in the military, police force, a firefighter or just have fought for justice where tyranny needs to be overcome, you bond with others in a common cause to the point where you become that close, as close as brothers. When you are in the middle of a bad situation and you have a wounded member, you have no problem carrying your brother to safety. You'll do anything for your brothers and that's what this song means to me.
