Hey do you recommend the 84949N? is it worth to purchase? because im torn between buying the tekton SAE and METRIC set or the GW 84949N. your opinion would really help me thanks
I have that same gearwrench 3/8" set and like it. Went with HF for 1/2" and they work great. Checks the boxes pretty well with 21,22,24,27,30, and 32mm. Have the SAE also and it goes up to 1 1/4 which is nice to have. Also FWIW in 1/2" drive I almost always find myself using only my deep sockets whereas in 3/8" I'm use shallows and deeps regularly.
I love my gearwrench sockets. I have their 8-22 3/8" impact set, along with the 3/8" and 1/4" chromes. I currently use bluepower Cornwell for my 1/2" impact set. I'll be picking up Sunex universal impact sockets over Snap-On's $60 a socket sets.

Cool. Just picked up gw 8 pc shallow sae impact socket set 84910N. Ten bucks at Lowes. I just need a very basic fractional impact set for working on 2-stroke engines. Plus, I think their socket rails work really well.

Tony I wondered about the sizing back when you were doing your first tours but didn’t want to be critical. I have matco 1/2 and sunex 3/8. Both are great but I’d recommend sunex for the price difference. The all metric 7-22 short, deep and swivel was $125 or 150
Ya lol I never figured out how or why I purchased that set. I must not have been thinking very much lol. And I agree that sunex set is a great deal 👍

The gearwrench 3/8 impact set i have is 8mm to 19mm it works very well, i should add the set i bought is both metric and sae standard and deep i wish i bought the bigger set that includes the flex-swivel. So i did buy a jager tools' i think thats how they spell it' from Amazon, a large 3/8 drive complete set includes torx ,e-torx, hex, flex, sae, metric standard and deep. A 85 pc set called" tight spot " i have experienced the the less expensive impact sockets hold up real well. The 1/2 set i have is craftsman and i found a impact adapter set i liked at tractor supply, it was free with a 19.99 1/2 deep socket set purchase so i have them as well

I've always thought 10mm 6 point should be included or 3/8 sae in a half inch drive set but thats about the smallest needed in half inch drive

good video. My impacts are a mix harbor freight, black hawk (old, ) kobalt and Craftsman (old USA) they overlap in the smaller sizes also.

The only reason I replaced my Pittsburgh impact sockets is I had to replace 2 sockets (1 broken and 1 lost) and the new style don’t match. I have mild ocd and the mismatched sockets plus the larger sizes in different brands was causing me issues. Tekton solved that for me. So now I have mismatched HF tools at home where I rarely use them and nice complete sets at work where it matters.
Use what works for you. I’ve used budget brands professionally for almost 30 years with very few issues. It’s not the tool but the man behind it.

This is the first video of yours I’ve watched and thank you! It created a question that might help new to tools buyers.... where to start? By that I mean if you were to suggest sockets, and drives, to build a starter set what sizes and at what point do you go from 1/4 to 3/8 to 1/2? What sizes overlap (for more torque on tougher bolts, or higher torque spec, etc)? A video on that topic would do well I think. Especially with suggests on brands/item numbers like you used here.

I was able to snag a fairly complete Husky 1/2 impact set at beg. of year for sweet deal from HD although the sockets aren't consistent. And have a very nice 3/8 Dewalt impact set along with a smaller Gearwrench 3/8 set on rails but I like the Dewalts more. I've found that Sunex and Tekton are great for individual sockets too.

I also have some Dewalt impact sockets I picked up at a deep discount at HD. The set comes with a impact driver adapter but it works great on my 3/8” electric impact ratchet.
Sunex makes a nice 1/2 inch set, it does start at 8mm but it goes to 30 I believe, skipping some sizes obviously.
Sk sets are very comprehensive as you can basically half sets almost
My 3/8 mid 8-19 covers most of my work and got little 5/8 pc kits in 1/2
I have them only to fill the tray because I'm ocd like that. Mostly use 3/8 up to 15

I just can't bring myself to buy anything gearwrench after what Apex tool did to the Armstrong foundry. They should be ashamed of what they did to the us made tool industry. Cut costs at the expense of American jobs in favor of overseas production. I don't care how many other companies have done it before them or that will still do it, it's despicable and turns my stomach.
Chevy did same thing with Lordstown Oh factory to Mexico
Dude i just got the husky impact sockett set for $39 its normally 79$ and they are lifetime warranty cant go wrong with that. its a 44 pc 3/8 set at the Depot

What do you think of 6 point box end wrenches?
They are nice and definitely have a place but when I am working with ratcheting wrenches or wrenches in most cases I'm looking for ease of access. A 12 point can get on at many different angles where a 6 point can sometimes be a pain in tight spaces. But I still believe 6 point wrenches work nicely in open areas.
I bought a 12pt set that starts at 8 ends at 39 with some skips on the larger sizes number also have a 6pt set that starts at 8 ends at 36 with no skips
1/2” drive 8mm sockets are for when you want to see how fast it will ring the bolt off , very important tool for those bad days

I have used 10mm 1/2” on head bolts, I believe. But yeah, I hate the low sizes in some of these so called 1/2” sockets sets.
Gear wrench needs set up their game and output only no skip sets and decent size range to compete with Neiko ,Sunnex, Tekton. Grey Pneumatic.
Why not spend 5 million dollars on the 1/4" snap on 5 piece set.

I do use the lower size 1/2 inch Drive sockets but that's primarily because I like to use 1/2 inch drive ratchet mostly ...unless I know I am only dealing with very small fasteners... but if I'm doing something that has various-sized Fasteners ill just do them all with a half inch drive ratchet.... most of the time
Agreed. I have no problems with my half inch drive chrome sockets on a ratchet. I just don't like the idea of a 1/2 drive 10mm impact socket on a 1/2 drive impact. Could very easily destroy a fastener. But I completely agree with you 👍
I could only see that set being useful if you can't afford a 3/8" or 1/4" impact tool. I prefer to under stress fasteners and tools. Too much power on tiny stuff makes for easily made expensive mistakes. Looking at standard torques for fastener sizes and comparing that with the tool you are using is a good idea. Besides lug nuts I only use impact tools for disassembly. Nothing beats hand tools for precision assembling anything else. Final torque on lug nuts is best done by hand too.
Completely agree and ya that's why I don't care for this set bc if I put a 10mm socket on a 1/2 impact I'm pretty likely to destroy the fastener 👍
I just bought grey pneumatic sae 1/2 dr impact swivel sockets & in about 5 weeks of use I broke the 3/4 15/16 & the 1 1/8 already definitely don't buy these I bought capri 3/4 15/16 & 1 1/8 had no problems for about 3 weeks now
I got the GP Duo sockets 4 years ago and haven’t looked back. I’d like to get them in 1/2 drive, and might since I found someone who will warranty them. GP has great sockets, but I gotta say, I hate their ratchets.

Old school mechanic here. If your looking for a good 1/2 drive socket set, I would suggest the Quinn 1/2 drive impact socket set. It's price is only $179.99. Plus very good quality as well.
Just got home from HF. Snagged the Quinn 61pc 1/2" master impact set....hit it with the 25% off coupon....so paid $134.99. 10-24mm skipped 23mm. SAE 7/16" to 1-1/4". 4 extensions and a universal. It's deep and shallows.
I use 14, 13, 12, 10 all the time in 1/2 drive. In fact my 13 is getting worn out.
I've used 13 in 1/2 dr but nothing really below that. 13 is one of my most commonly used sockets as well
I like the Capri Tools 1/2 drive master impact socket set. 10mm-27mm deep and shallow, laser etched and stamped about $129 for sockets only or with a magnetic storage rail for $150.00.

It sounds like Tony didn’t do any homework before buying that set. I have a different GearWrench 1/2” set and it has appropriate sizes. It just goes to show that you shouldn’t impulse tool sets, do some homework and know what you are buying!
I have GearWrench, Pittsburgh, Pittsburg Pro, grey pneumatic, Tekton, Sunnex, Williams, and other impact tools. They all are decent tools but all will wear after heavy use. Always check sizes and completeness of any set you buy and that it fits your needs...with the exception of the regular pittsburgh set. That set is great for abusive work like driving out seals and for making specialty tools. With a coupon the entire set costs about as much as a single GearWrench socket.
I didn’t mean to be too critical of Tony here. Anyone who’s owns tools have made impulse buys that didn’t work out. I certainly have....🤦♂️
No your absolutely right. When I first started buying tools I found I liked Gearwrench and bought alot of them but then came to find out many other tool brands have better sets and it's important to do research. Not one tool company is going to make the best everything or the tool you need depending on the job. Your absolutely right and that's why I share this info bc I don't want others to make the same mistake I did when I first started buying tools. Many good brands available today. Don't just stick to one brand 👍👍👍

I have both GearWrench and Grey Pnumatic in 3/8” impact and like them both. I can’t say there is much difference between them although they are not identical. I don’t have 1/4“ impacts but there may be more of a difference there. It will be interesting to see what Tony says.
The only reason i can see of using the smaller sizes on 1/2 drive is to keep things simple while doing a job. You technically only have to carry around one 1/2 drive ratchet and socket set compared to carrying around both 1/2 and 3/8 drive set in the tool bag. Less weight if we're getting technical.
The other part of me says "why the hell do i need to put 1200ftlb of torque on a 8mm bolt".

I was checking out the HF PP 1/2" drive deep chrome sockets which go from 10 to 19mm, exactly the same sizes as the 3/8" drive deep sockets. What the heck is the point? BTW, I love the Tekton and Sunex impact sockets.

Have to agree with you on the size set that you picked up and half inch. I will say the only half inch drive smaller socket that I have used outside of the ones you covered was a 13 mm. Head bolts that have a partial stud where the barreling is bigger than 3/8 drive can fit over🍻

I recently bought some stark one once sockets due to the fact a lot of these other socket companies do not offer life time warranty nor are they made in American… most my other sockets are snap on or the older made in America craftsman impacts

True Story - When I got my first Impact Wrench (for Construction/Electrical use) I bought a Milwaukee Impact and a cheap set of Kobalt Impact Sockets (3/8 drive) to go with it to get me started ,....the idea was that I would get a much more expensive and higher end/Pro-Grade set later. . that was in 2010 . . it's 2020 and I am still using that Kobalt set -LOL! ....they never wore out, still going. I never had to buy a higher end/pro-grade set.

Socket Set. You can get both sets for $256! Personally, I'm buying the gear wrench set in an 8mm-36mm deep socket and buying the ATD 10mm-36 shallow socket set. You'll never need another 1/2 set once you buy a 38mm socket.
Only place I can see that being handy is if you want to use same size on multiple ratchets or need to hold two sides it’s an option. Let’s say you and a buddy are pulling identical parts on both sides at same times. I have used an 8 in 1/2 drive before not that often. I have set up certain sizes on two ratchets knowing that we both needed same sizes. I usually used the big clunky setup and gave the other guy the better one you don’t want your help frustrated right. LOL

Take a look at the Neiko impact sockets. Review them next.
In Chrome I would disagree a bit, but with impact I agree and have the same in my set... untouched smaller 1/2 drive impact sockets. There is no way I will be using a 1/2 impact on anything that low. The Tekton sets I have has the same "issue".
At work I use the 14 and 13 pretty frequently, but that's diesel shop, and exhaust clamps are always really stuck, and need that extra oomph.
That makes sense. Someone else said in heavy duty line of work it could be helpful in some areas.
What exhuast work are you doing the requires metric?
Yep them 1/2" sockets work well with semi - truck and container chassis from the Ports of America.
Grey Pnuematic,you don't buy on Amazon.Reason why is Amazon is an unauthorized dealer of Grey Pnuematic and Grey Pnuematic voids they warranty if bought on Amazon.An auto parts salesman I know has a customer that bought 2 Grey Pnuematic impact socket sets on Amazon,told him he will not warranty them

I buy all my Grey Pneumatic on Amazon but I'm not worried about the warranty I've never had an issue with them and have never had to warranty even one socket...
I bought a 3/8” drive set from Amazon and am also not concerned about the warranty. I mostly use them on my impact ratchets not on high torque impact guns.

Actually, using those smaller sizes make disassembly faster because the guns way faster than the ratchet.
Of course use the ratchet for assembly.
Ya of course using an impact is faster. What I'm saying is in most cases you don't need these smaller sizes in 1/2 you could use 3/8.
@@TonyTheTechnician my 1/2 is faster than the 3/8 air ratchet plus it's quieter. I analyze the tool layouts for speed and repetition in series less switching means more speed.
I bought sets that go down to 8mm for a really good deal.
Not required but nice.
Speed is 80% of the reason to use impact tools. Only about 20% of the time do you need the extra power. I made the switch from air to electric to reduce noise and increase speed.
They appear to have accidently put a 1/2in drive on a 3/8 set...
I never use 3/8 impacts for some reason. All i own is three 1/2 impacts guns

You dont know what your missing😄. I never considered them till I got a Milwaukee 3/8 stubby impact. Still got a big set of 1/2 impacts. I just use the ir neumatic 1/2 for heavy duty stuff and the 3/8 on the majority of everything else. 1/4 stuff I just use the hex impact.
Grey pneumatic is nice because there thin walled. If your starting out you can use it like a chrome socket

I love my GP 3/8 shallow and deep sockets! They are the ones I use the most out of any and have beaten them up pretty damn well over the years and have yet to let me down.

Skimming through the sockets you have I don't really see how it was that big of a mistake. It looks like you only have impact sockets in 1/2" drive and if you only have a 1/2" drive impact, how else would you use it on smaller socket sizes? I realize you could use an adapter, but I try to stay away from using regular sockets with an impact, even if the adapter is impact rated. Personally my impact is 1/2" drive and the impact socket sets I bought for it (deep and shallow) both range from 8mm-24mm, the since the largest bolt on my car is 24mm really this range works perfectly for me. As I'm sure you know, just because a bolt is relatively small doesn't mean it won't require a crap ton of torque to get off if it's rusted on there. ect.
Half of my impact sockets are 3/8 a majority of the time I use my impact driver so I can use any drive size with it. I don't use 8, 9, 10 mm in 1/2 it's just way over kill. I look at using 1/2 drive for larger sizes. It's not an issue with any of them I just don't use 1/2 Dr with that small of a socket. It was the fact that my 3/8 drive set I have covers everything this 1/2 drive set covers. I would have rather bought a 1/2 dr set that covers more and larger sizes.
Tekton has New line of 1/2 impacts and will have a new lineup in 3/8 as well.

I bought my Dad the Metric 1/2” impact set in a case. He loves them!
I have both 1/2 & 3/8 in metric and sae deep and standard. The largest sets available because ocd. I mostly use 3/8 now because Tekton goes to 24mm and milwaukee’s right angle impact is incredible for suspension work.

You basically bought a 3/8" set that's in 1/2-in drive haha. I bought my master 1/2" set but only use the 10mm 1/2" when i get too lazy to change sockets on my 1/4 or 3/8 ratchet.

Why would you sell the 1/2" set? That's the stronger, most robust set of the two. If you already own a 1/4" drive set which has sockets up to 10, 12 or 14mm, then I can't see the point of keeping the 3/8" set.
My 1/4 aren't impact. The 3/8 has both deep and shallow and covers all the normal sizes a 3/8 set should. The 1/2 Dr set covers to small of a range like 8mm and doesn't go high enough. The 1/2 should cover larger socket sizes.

That's an odd set of 1/2" drive sockets. You wouldn't think they'd sell very many of those being the same sizes as the 3/8" set.

You long winded clown! Which is strongest!? Lol. I know GP runs a little more money than tekton. I own both impact sockets, so far haven't broken any of either. But I have had my grey pneumatic's quite a few years longer and never a hiccup
