ALDI vs NAME BRAND FOOD (Blind Taste Test)

  • Every wonder if the Aldi Grocery foods are better? Sure, they save you money, but what about the taste and nutrition?! I've heard from some people that some Aldi foods are actually the same thing as name brands in different packaging! So, in this video, I'm battling Aldi foods with Name Brand Grocery foods to see which one tastes better - and which is the better deal. We'll also look at the nutritional content and ingredients of each one.
    Whether it's Raisin Bran, Cheetos, Snapple, or Chips Ahoy...are they REALLY better than the Aldi versions which are a fraction of the price?

    I use to work for a temp company at a Dole salad factory. We made the Dole brand, the Kroger brand, the walmart brand, and the aldi brand! So I'm all for off brand products!!!

    • @SarahSchneider2

      Just like you I am for the off brand in many products if it will save me money. Some people are just so picky like they will only use Aunt Jemima syrup for like $4 a bottle when it's not on sale but I would prefer to only pay $2 or $2.50 and buy store brand to save money. Another one is the Ketchup like it doesn't taste any different between heinz, hunts, or most store brands. Also with bagles or English muffins I buy based on price not buy brand.

    I don't know about the US but here in Europe every manufacturer has a code number. If you look at off-brand manufacturer's codes you will often discover they're made in the same factory as the name brand that costs double or more. Again, often with the same recipe as the more expensive model. The difference comes down to name and packaging.

    • @fanafofolelblandblo7976
      @fanafofolelblandblo7976 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Often times however, though the same company prepares and bakes them, the recipie will differ slightly, as most companies own their own recipies.. I have friends who work for Luprino, which does cheese, they make about 17 different recipies of the same cheese, packaged for different names.

    • @moonlily1
      @moonlily1 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's often true with different products. I found out that the name brand pregnancy tests and the off-label pregnancy tests are made by the same manufacturer and are literally the same test, the only different is the name and one has nicer packaging, so that's probably true of a lot of other American products as well.

    • @moonlily1

      @Gus VanHorn Someone told me she thinks their cereals taste strange compared to the name brand but I personally see no difference except with the knockoff cinnamon toast crunch.

    They might be stressing the "real chocolate" because most Europeans don't consider American chocolate real chocolate.

    • @illfayted
      @illfayted 6 ปีที่แล้ว +33

      I think they stress real chocolate because a lot of brands use "chocolaty morsels", which use mostly palm oil and don't contain enough (or any) coco butter and can't legally be called chocolate.

      I don't either most of the time which is why I am furious that Hershey took over the Cadbury brand in the US and we can no longer get the original Cadbury UK chocolate which tastes far superior! The only thing we (actually I should say my husband he’s the one that eats them) didn’t like was their version of pop-tarts, but thankfully they sell a few flavors of pop-tarts which is great. Even though I am a huge Aldi fan, their snacks (anything Clancy) are weak. Taste is the main goal and Aldi brand snacks are pretty tasteless. What they have going for them is they are cheap. Aldi has some great cheap wines. Their Pinot Grigio and Merlot for $2.89 are great deals. They also have a Rose for $8 that was selected as one of the best Rose's in the world. For people who are lactose intolerant like me, they have a nice selection of Almond Milks. In recent years Aldi has really expanded their selection of non-food household items. I've found lots of great things I didn't know I needed on the Aldi shelves. I could go on, but people who live near an Aldi are lucky - affordable and decent groceries. Its no wonder Aldi is growing like mad.

    When you see a package boasting real chocolate, it’s because a lot of brands, Chips Ahoy included, don’t use real chocolate, but other ingredients, mixed with chocolate liquor, to give the product the taste of chocolate, but at a cheaper cost to produce. Any time you see a package that says “chocolatey” chips or “chocolate flavored”
    That’s when it isn’t real chocolate.

For example if you have ketchup or mayonnaise, are they the same exact ingredients or do people just use the same facilities. How do they regulate quality differently in the same factory. For instance I’ve heard Costco Kirkland brand is often the same name brand without the name, such as Duracell batteries and north face jackers

    Aldi has an impressive line of Gluten-Free products: bread, cereal, baking mixes, etc. They are a fraction of the cost of the "big name" Gluten-Free products, cookie, cake and pancake mixes are yummy, but we haven't found a versatile all around GF baking mix from Aldi yet. Aldi granola is great, taste, quality and cost is better than most other GF granolas. Gluten-free bread is good but contains eggs (some of us cannot eat eggs), etc. Overall, we'd say their Gluten-Free line has superior prices and very, very good various specific Gluten-free products. We've been thrilled with superior produce at Aldi's and very, very good meats too. Some Aldi's are not towing the line, we know. But ours is really impressive and is our major grocery store!

    I like Aldi's cheese (lots of variety of cheeses available)...my husband loves the Harvati Cheese. Enjoy the Greek Yogurt and the wonderful sour cream too...so thick and creamy. We have good luck purchasing food at Aldi and saves us a ton of money. Oh, the salsa is yummy too. Their chocolate is wonderful!

      Yes, great price on their cheeses including shredded and specialty cheese that are fantastic and fun to try out, especially with wine. I do buy their deluxe American cheese over the Kraft deluxe now since it saves good money, but the Kraft deluxe does seem much firmer and more like deli cheese. The Aldi almost seems a tiny bit like process cheese singles, but close enough to the real stuff. Maybe just a texture thing.

    I am a big fan of Aldi for a number of reasons. One is speed; even with a wait to check out, it is faster than going to the traditional super market. Another is their selection of gluten-free options. I appreciate that you have to return your buggy (shopping cart for you northerners) to redeem your quarter because it keeps the parking lot clear of dent inducing buggies. Most importantly, I LOVE their Swiss Rolls (sorry Little Debbie)!

    There is a factory nearby that makes the same product for grocery stores as Whole Foods. They just use different packaging. I go for off brand if it tastes good but I will pay more for a better taste. Fun video!

    The Aldi Clancy's snacks are very hit or miss. The cheese curls are not up to name brand spec but the chips generally are. The spicy hot cheese curls are a disaster, way below Hot Cheetos. But then, no store brand hot cheese curls is as good as the name brand. Aldi's Millville cereals are really outstanding. Every one I've tried has nailed it. Their various kinds of frozen pizza are also always outstanding. In my area, Aldi milk is exactly the same as Costco and Sam's Club milk. So it's top quality.

      Aldi used to be good years ago.
      They are pushing blankets and kitchen ware and toys now and the food isles are disapperaing.
      About 10 to 15 years ago they had twice as many food isles than what they have now in the same store.
      You are better off with walmart, at least you get selection that may be even comparable on prices.
      Why drive across town and wast gasoline and time for a couple of items and then you have to go to another store anyways.

    I really got a kick out of this tasting video! Because of it, I just bought the Cinnamon Toasters (which are made by Post Cereals) and the Chewy bars, and think that they're good, too. It's funny how some of the foods at Dollar Tree are regional brands that don't have the distribution channels that the big guys have, and are little gems that are a fantastic value. If you get them in your area, try the Westminster Baking Co. Oyster Crackers; you'll usually see them near the soups, or on an end-cap. They're restaurant-quality, and are very fresh tasting. Hope you'll do more videos like this, because they're fun and eye-opening! P.S. May I ask about the coffee print behind you? Did you create it, or was it purchased? I need it in my life! Thanks!
