    Another important thing to remember is the hunger feeling applies to being thirsty also. If you're feeling hungry your body could be telling you that you're actually thirsty and not really wanting food.

    One of my secret weapons is hummus. Eating raw broccoli, bell peppers, or carrots is painful but add hummus and I'm all over it!
    Also baked wedges of sweet potato. If you focus on healthy food that is ALSO filling (plenty of fiber, fats), it makes it easier.

    One of my tricks is tiny bites. I take a small bite or eat things like popcorn one piece at a time. If I chew up a tiny bite, it fills my mouth with as much flavor as a big bite, but tiny bites make treats last longer and gives your stomach time to recognize that it's no longer empty, so the "stop eating" message gets to your brain before you've eaten too much. Smaller bites slow me down, so a bag of popcorn lasts an hour instead of 10 minutes, then I have the indulgence need satiated, because I just sat and snacked for a hour!

    • @shanmayy
      @shanmayy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      This is why I've switched to trying to eat with mainly chopsticks at home! Not only is it forcing tiny bites, but I'm not great with them so it definitely slows me down lol.

    I switched from candy bars to dates. Dates have quite a bit of sugar but also lots of nutrition. Keeping hand held 5 lb weights at my desk has increased my muscle tone. I use them while watching youtube or when I'm in zoom meetings (with the camera off!). Thanks Kallie for all your tips!

    I started eating primarily whole foods after my first baby was born. Now 10 years and 3 babies later, I weigh 20 pounds less than I did before motherhood. As you said, weight is not the best measure of health. But I feel better and know that I'm healthier than I was before.
    Another tip is to expand your palate. Try different spices. Cardamom in coffee adds a sweetness and reduces the need for sugar. Onion powder, paprika, and thyme on potatoes eliminates the need for ketchup or sour cream. And don't be afraid to give healthy, varied foods to your kids. My kids eat kale chips, curry, sushi, jambalaya... almost anything! They've always just eaten what we eat, so it's not weird to them.

    Awesome suggestions! I used nearly every one of these to lose the 60 pounds I put on in college. The most important thing I did - other than going to the gym - was to remember that I didn't need to binge on or even eat junk food right now because it would still be there tomorrow and next week and next year... The world wasn't suddenly going to run out of chocolate!

    Great tips. I lost 40lbs by just watching my portions and eating whole foods first. If I wanted chips (and I agree - I will totally eat the whole bag of sour cream and onion ruffles) then I would eat an apple first. If I didn’t want the apple than clearly I was eating for some reason other than hunger. If I ate the apple and still wanted the chips, I would have a handful. Removing the idea that any food was bad was also helpful. Food is food, but I prefer to choose the one that will fuel my body better than others.

No one ever got fat eating salad dressing. Just make sure you have more salad than dressing. And, avoid low-fat/low-cal dressings. They tend to be really unhealthy and full of sugar. ~ Lisa

      I’ve been teased for using small dishes, but I have stayed a reasonable weight because of this (and usually the teasing has been fairly good-natured though sometimes a little aggravating). Another thing I do which I catch slack for is leaving a small portion some food and then getting scoffs for this, but our bodies are not waste bins, and I will finish the “two bites” I saved later when I am hungry. I used to have the “clean plate” mentality growing up, and I was overweight because of it.
      Power to you doing what you sense is good for your body.

      Before the 80’s most dinner plates were sized like a what we consider a salad plate. Visually the smaller plates tricks us into thinking that we are getting the same amount of food as before. Whereas the modern dinner plates with a regular serving makes us think we are not getting enough food.
      I got rid of my everyday dishes during one of my moves about 5 years ago and picked up some salad plates I liked. Definitely helps with portion control, as does either measuring or weighing your food.

He's only 37, I need him around for a while! It's very daunting and overwhelming, but I think these tips seem really doable. If I absolutely wanted some when I was home, I had to walk across the yard to get to them first. The empties then became the "garbage can" for the car.

    Great tips. I've lost 50 lbs over the past year just by eating only when I'm hungry.
    I was eating 3 meals a day & most of the time, at one of those meals, I really wasn't hungry.
    I started eating bfast, a snack around noon if I'm hungry & maybe a snack in afternoon if I don't eat one at noon. And a healthy homemade meal for dinner. No pre packaged meals or foods. I eat anything I want & I eat it in moderation. Buy small cups of ice cream instead of half a gal.
    You have great tips.
    It's really silly for me since I'm not up as early or quite as active as I once was. Not rushing around using calories.
    That's what retirement does, a slower pace but still active.

    If you changing your eating habits to be more healthy, get used to that first and then add exercise. It will be a lot easier to stick to healthy habits instead of trying to do it all at once. Also, when you’re ready to add exercise, only watching your guilty pleasure shows when simply walking on the treadmill or using elliptical can help with motivation lol. You mentioned watching fats, but I think many people mistakenly think that dietary fat, makes us fat, but really sugar, empty calories like those found in so many carbs make us gain weight. I went to Walmart and got a package of 42 Mainstay portion control containers for only $8, and it is labeled/color coded for protein, fruit, veggies, etc. I was told it was a dupe for a super expensive meal prep set, which is a plus! All I do is portion out my food for lunch or dinner (3/4c protein, 2c veggies, 1c fruit for dessert) and it keeps me satisfied for a long time! I always thought I would need more food than what is in those containers, but it it fills you up a lot better than you think! It’s my secret to not over eating 😉

    Love the plate size suggestion. Over the last 50ish years, our dinner plates have become much bigger and I think you're absolutely right. Bigger plate = bigger portion. I don't diet either. I have in laws that do and they don't get why I don't have to. Next time someone mentions it, I'm going to show them this video. A lot of these things I already do, but couldn't properly articulate other than saying that I eat everything in moderation. I love the snack before you go out thing too! I do that, except before sushi because, give me all the sushi! Lol.

    Great tips. My husband and I cut out oils and most unnecessary sugar. Most people are born addicted to sugar since about 80% of food has sugar in it. We're not super strict about it, we still have candy and I make cookies sometimes. But we try to get sugar free/low sugar foods as much as possible. Or stick to natural sugars like what's in fruit or whole foods. I used to fry tortillas in vegetable oil for his tacos, but he was always sluggish afterwards and got heartburn. Now I use real butter or lard for cooking and he and I have our energy back. Not only that, but we don't have much digestive problems or heartburn anymore. We're not not very strict, but we also do interminute fasting (meaning skipping breakfast and no snacks after dinner). This allows our food to actually digest before we actually eat again. It seriously helped me. I couldn't eat a enough at meals and was hungry again an hour or two after eating because I wasn't able to digest my food enough before eating again. It also really helped my food cravings. We just feel so much better.

    I've been trying to change my outlook on food and eating healthier. I've also been eating at a calorie deficit. One thing I realised I'd that by eating healthy and whole foods, I can still eat a tone of food and actually feel full while still staying under a calorie limit. For instance, a pan seared chicken thigh and a cup of green beans with an apple is around 350 calories, which is not only perfect for a lunch, but I feel full for hours after. Eating a calorie deficit to for weight loss does not have to be unhealthy or unpleasant at all.
    Just something from my experience! Hope it helps someone!

    I poo-pooed intermittent fasting at first, started doing it because a colleague mentioned her doctor recommending it for her. Her current health issues are similar to what is genetically prevalent in my family, so I just started doing it. Dropped about 20 lbs without doing more than limiting my eating window. Not only is there not enough hours to pack in as much food, but eventually you gravitate toward better things. If in a rush for dinner, I'll toss eggs and broccoli together instead of, say, pasta with broccoli or (my weakness) Rice a Roni.

    I caught myself drinking like 5 cans of soda a day and I knew that I needed to substitute the carbonation because that’s my favorite part of soda. So now I keep seltzer around instead and it has worked great. Satisfies the carbonation and “cool summer drink” craving but I know that I’m not completely harming my body with extreme amounts of sugar and God knows what else. Seltzer takes some getting used to, but now I love it. Also the eating before dining out tip is genius! One of my tips is that when i go out to eat and i don’t want to eat too much, I’ll wear clothes that are tight fitting especially around my stomach (like tight jeans/belt/tight dress) because that’ll make sure i wont eat too much coz my stomach will bloat and my clothes will hurt lol! But I definitely feel full so i’m not really depriving myself from food, im just eating exactly what my stomach can take! Same thing at home, if i feel like i want to cut down a little, I’ll wear uncomfy pj bottoms for a few days to make it less comfortable to go on one of my crazy midnight feasts, and surely i go to bed feeling much lighter, with just the amount of food that i need. 😊

    With the salad plate vs. dinner plate discussion, the same goes for meal prep containers. I feel like when I use a proper sized tupperware container to meal prep, I'm more likely to give myself a realistic portion. If I have a bigger container, I feel the need to fill it up, thus giving myself more than I can actually eat. Waste of food, waste of money, and waste of extra meals I could be making

    From what I was told if you eat some protein with your carbs/bread you will stay fuller longer because the protein slows the sugar/fat release of carbs (at least that's what the nurse/dietician from the diabetes place told me)

    • @StormChasingNinja
      @StormChasingNinja 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Heather Bowron my dad will sometimes eat a good amount of peanut butter after consuming sugar. Or he will take a good walk to burn off almost as soon as he eats it. Also Broccoli helps to keep blood sugar down. About 2 cups a day will help keep it down. Again, also, adding unsweetened cocoa powder to your coffee will help keep blood sugar down. My dad does these things to avoid high blood sugar and possibly type 2 diabetes. My grandpa also started doing this and has noticed a HUGE difference when my grandma checks his blood sugar. Try to also talk 30 minute walks, maybe everyday or at least 3 times a week. Just walking is enough exercise to loose a little weight, burn sugar, and it isn't so hard on your joints.

    • @angiesmith2877
      @angiesmith2877 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Fat also slows the sugar release, like protein does. So whether you eat a plain piece of bread or an apple, your blood sugar will spike and then crash. If you have some fat and/or protein with it, then the sugar conversion is more gradual and you will feel satisfied longer and skip the low blood sugar crash.

      The Gold Project I learned about chocolate oatmeal yesterday. Just cook up the old-fashioned oats then add a heaping teaspoon of 100% dark cocoa. I added some walnuts, cashews, honey, and some strawberries and raspberries and a pinch of salt. I also added some cinnamon and nutmeg but the chocolate was too strong to taste it. Lol. It....was interesting. I think using a nut butter instead of whole nuts would have worked better. I also have a tiny sweet tooth so I was sick of chocolate halfway through. Lol. But if someone has a really strong chocolate craving, this would be a very healthy way to satisfy that. :)

    I have been doing a modified fasting and I love it. I eat in an 8 hour block and I feel like I make better choices, feel more full and stay within my calories.

    Going to school Monday through Friday helps so much with eating only when I’m hungry. I eat breakfast and then pack a healthy lunch with some almonds, protein bars, fresh fruit, and maybe yogurt. It actually fills me and never makes me feel sick or gross. I also carry around water every where I go and I’ve found I’m much more hydrated and feel less hungry. I used to feel so hungry all of the time when really I was just dehydrated. Great tips. :)

      you shouldn’t live off protein bars tho. try to pack cooked food instead of packaged stuff.

    I use unsweetened original almond milk in my coffee.

      Almond milk? Gross. I bet it doesn't change the consistency even close to what actual cream does. I use organic half and half and I don't worry about little things like cream in my coffee. Life is too short to be worrying about petty BS like that.

      Hollypeno Pepper wtf? Some people actually enjoy almond milk, you don’t have to be an asshole about it.

      @@Hollypenopepper Almond milk is literally not gross it's clean, natural, perfect for people who want its creamy taste and healthy so it's great in coffee :) I really like sweetened almond milk but I love other dairy free milks and creamers in my coffee too. It's amazing and makes my coffee creamy. You can have your preference but don't try to make it a fact when it's really not just because you are annoyed with other people enjoying life and their coffee without dairy. I don't understand your pettiness.

    I eat everything But started cooking everything I eat and only eat out when I'm hanging out with work colleagues or friends once meal a week to once a month. However I have stopped buying crisps and junk food because I've loaded my grocery shopping with nuts, seeds and fruits and it's like I need to finish them or that's my money wasted.
    I also thought part of healthy eating was eating three meals a day as I just used to eat lunch and dinner... I started eating breakfast (very light, protein bar, fruit or oatmeal and fruit) then noticed I stopped eating dinner and food was going to waste... I've stopped planning for three meals a day/7 days a week haha. I plan for 7 Light breakfasts, and 10 main meals, which I can eat anytime during the week.
    I've also stopped buying sweets so often, because dried fruits and fruits are full of sugar too but are nutritionally denser than sweets...
    I don't eat past 8pm, I've stopped ordering takeaway so much because I'm following the FODMAP plan and foods under the O category make me bloat and feel uncomfortable... Which is why I used to feel like I'd been punched in the stomach after eating Chinese takeaway 30 mins to bedtime. I've been making my own versions of takeaway food... But I know what's in it and it's cheaper.
    However... I still don't exercise XD... one change at a time I guess XD

    Great tips. Fat is easy to overconsume and often hidden and not enjoyed intentionally. Also, the simple carbs vs complex carbs makes a huge difference. I am working on being more intentional about enjoying 1 slice of good quality bread instead of more than I need or lame old store bread.
    I also try to always sit to eat. Distracted eating causes me to overeat and I dont actually enjoy the flavours when Im standing and distracted.

      I freeze 72% to 85% dark chocolate. Hard to over eat it if it's frozen. And just generally getting to great chocolate skips stupid waxy sugary chocolate.
