Why isn't gandalf with the dwarves against Smaug in this, if the ring was destroyed, he wouldn't go to Dol Guldur.
Except Gandalf wasn't sure entirely about the nature of the ring until over 77 years later. Traveling by eagle would have been easier back then, though, except for the fact that eagles weren't Gandalf's personal taxi service.
And the fact that Mayars aren't really supposed to intervene
that is no excuse! He saw him put it into his pocket, in later movies he escaped more times with it. He should have questioned how bilbo at least got out of all those situations! And then question him about it! Of course that would make the lotr filmline non existent but it was dumb!
+nivada13 Actually, Gandalf wasn't around for most of the book which Bilbo used the ring. He left at Mirkwood and didn't reappear until after Smaug was killed. He saw something, but he wasn't sure what. How would anyone what he put into his pocket was the one ring?
Then the movie is badly written and adopted from the books. Cause we are talking about the film here. This is a channel that concentrates mainly on films so it would be logical for how the filmversion is that he would suspect something.
+nivada13 Even in the film version, Gandalf's only contact with Bilbo using the ring was when he appeared after the goblin town disaster. Not enough time to do anything or be able to make a connection. I cannot defend the movie, though. Peter Jackson made a mess of The Hobbit. But HISHE is kind of lazy with its eagles solve every problem. The Misty Mountains are a good deal away from Mordor. Plus, it is out of character for Gandalf to threaten to Bilbo like is done in the parody.

Even after Gandalf looked straight at Bilbo's ring in Bagend, took him 17 years to convince himself that is the One Ring. As he mentioned, there are many magic rings in this world.

The Goblin King looked pretty much like something from a kid's story book, which is what The Hobbit is.
The hobbit is not a child's book. It was just bad cgi if you think it was bad. I personally thought that the goblin king. Didn't have any issues. I loved the hobbit series.

He doesn't recognize it(because they only way to know it's the One Ring is to heat it up and reveal the runes) and, besides, the odds that it would be THAT one ring are so astronomical that it probably doesn't even cross his mind.
Unless Gandalf is just a real a##hole and wants Bilbo to go all creepy and start saying "my precious!"
In the book he see's the ring, he makes a comment along the lines of, "yes that story RINGS, true, it has a Ring of truth about it" to key Bilbo in that he saw the ring. At the time of the hobbit, the ring was not evil, just a magic ring. Later when Tolkien decided to make it evil, he just explains that Gandalf thought it was just some random ring. Rather than the one ring. (After all if a goblin had had it why wouldn't he have taken it to its master)

here is why they not fly on eagles all the time.
first: the eagels are a very power old race. they are not simple pets to summon.
and second, the wizards or less know the maia where spirits from the valar. (the lower one). and survants of valinor. commanded by eru(lotr god). and they where not allowed to use there full power. as they are only for advice of man dwarf and elf. there power is only to defend them self and friends. not for ther own gain.
it is why saruman was baned after he turned dark. and lost his power.
and for those who want to know, sauron is not the most evil thing in lotr. he had a master once, morgoth (once know as melkor), one of the most power full valar, that turned evil, and choce not to follow eru.
he rained middle-earth (or arda) for the first age. after many wars (he had dragons and balrogs in his army). where defeated. he was sent to eternal darkness night. in a timeless void. and sauron was spared, but take of his power. and sauron learned how to smith from a elf. and got the skills to help make the ring(yes sauron didnt make them alone). the 3 elven rings where not made by sauron.
and the rest is seen in the movies.

Funny how he actually needed the ring for everything EXCEPT the dragon
In the book he used the ring a few times with the dragon. It isn't so important, because they can smell like dog.
It's the only thing that kept him alive when taunting the dragon when they first meet. At the very least it kept the dragon interested why he couldn't see him long enough not to just eat him.
In the book he hid from the dragon using the ring and found his only weak spot

Actually, (my knowledge comes from the books by the way) Bilbo uses the ring to get answers from Smaug, like his fatal weakens, which a bird later tells bard, who shoots down Smaug.
Actually Gandalf doesn't know that Bilbo's ring is actually ''the one ring'' in Hobbit movies. He learned who it's real owner is after Bilbo left the ring to Frodo. So, why does Gandalf try to throw it to mount doom in this movie while he doesn't know that it is ''the one ring''? It doesn't make sense.
Considering the power of the one ring I would think Gandalf would be able to sense it. Even if he didn't, when he took Bilbo he could just confirm it by forcing it out of his pocket. I have to admit, in the movie Gandalf really should have inquired further what with Bilbo acting suspicious about it.
***** It doesn't work this way. In the books it was mentioned that Gandalf got suspicious after realizing Bilbo doesn't age, after the events in the Hobbit. It took Gandalf 60 years to investigate, until he was sure it was the One Ring. In the LOTR movie this section was cut of course, but then there was still one brief scene showing Gandalf's investigation in Minas Tirith.

Ok let me get this straight because all the replies are wrong. iquabakaner was right about everything except the 60 years part. After a couple re visits to the Shire and to Frodo did he suspected it was evil and investigate it which took 10 years. Frodo had it for 17 years before he embarked on his quest.
Won't Tell, Sauron worked very hard to conceal the power of the One Ring to anyone that might be a threat to it. Only after they are aware of it's true nature does it start to manipulate and tempt them, unless of course you are the ring bearer eg. Bilbo and Gollum.

Seriously I wondered why Gandalf didn't just do that. Like, he knows Bilbo's got a ring of power. The three elven ones are in known locations. The nine human ones are obviously lost. The seven dwarven rings were also lost. That leaves only ONE POSSIBILITY, Gandalf, no need to wait a hundred years for Frodo to get it, then run off to Minas Tirith for a few years to study whatever and only then decide it needed to be destroyed. This entire time Sauron was building up his armies. If Gandalf had just taken Bilbo right then, they probably really could've just walked into Mordor.

i didn't read the books, only watched the movie.
He goes to Bilbo's party, Bilbo leaves the ring for frodo (who is 33) Gandalf researches the ring and finds out 17 years later that it is the one ring, so Frodo (now 50) goes on his journey
Whoa,,, so the research that Gandalf made in those libraries was not just for a few seconds, hehe. He just goes-and returns [hooosh-fooosh] . I didn't realize it to be 17 years.

yeah, it was 17 years, which always kind of confused me because where he found the information probably would have been the first place he looked, considering Elrond probably told Gandalf "This one time, my mate from Gondor wouldn't throw the one ring into the fire." and Gandalf would use Logic and go, "Hmmmm, I should probably check Isildur's notes"
Gandalf didn't know that it was the ring. He just thought it was ordinary magic ring that makes the wearer invisible.

True, but at that time Mordor was gathering up forces so their security and if you watch the trailer for thedesolation of smaug you can see that sauron is refornmed so he can easly see that huge eagle was flying towards his very well protected lair.And right after that scene in the movie the orcs where rihgt there so they had no time to check, and also goblins sometimes travel at night, so most likey theyy did not want to reveal their location with smoke, but they could have done that later.
Yusoff M You should read the books. Gandalf didn't know it was the ONE RING, and he had left to Minas Tirith to research the ring before coming back and throwing it in the fire.

Ronin Kassaiken Yeah! There are so many things wrong with that film, I judge it the worst book-to-movie adaptation in history!
My sister says, "Thank you for summing that up." She actually wants to write a letter to someone to remake it. I personally think, though, that the Inheritance Cycle would be better portrayed as a TV show, with every book as a season so that they could get it as close to the books as possible, and not be worried about a lengthy production.
That is actually a very good idea since the books are so long and in-depth, well the other books not really the first one. It could be similar to Game of Thrones style but a bit tamer since the novel doesn't have too many scenes like that. Now that is a show I would very much like to watch. And tell your sister that she has good judgement! :)
