Theory: Dr strange saw lots of ways Thanos got beat but then earth exploded when a Celestial was born from it. He needed the Snap to happen to prevent the birth. And then for everyone to come back after.

@@fifaisscripted yes, they do. at the end of infinity war thanos was preparing to reduce the entire universe to atoms and rebuild it, which would have destroyed the celestials along with everything else.

And if Strange pulled his Dormammu tricks, Thanos could have easily escaped and surpassed the Time Stone tricks. Space could be used to exit the space where Strange tries to pull off the loop (which apparently takes a while to pull off the trick), used Reality for a space where time is insignificant, so on and so forth. Also, Tony needed to be alive for a reason.
