      The pleasure is mine. Love sharing with those who dig these sounds. These recordings exist by minor miracle (thanks to the original taper), and these are historical artifacts of the best kind. Makes we wish there were more and more recordings of this and every Ronettes tour! RIP, Estelle.

      PS, turns out that WYSLMT was a regular vocal spot for Estelle in their shows, even with Ronnie around, at least according to a 1964 article. See Ronettes content at:

      Thank you for the link! Very cool. I had been looking for info such as this but had no luck. I like the tidbits like “favorite actor,” “favorite band,” etc. I imagine WYSLMT had some sort of special meaning to Estelle.

    I can’t help to think that with better management they could’ve evolved into a group that showcased all three of their singing talents. They all definitely had the singing chops.

    • @ralphabetsoup
      @ralphabetsoup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I was blown away by Estelle's voice, especially, but all three could have sung lead, I agree. There aren't many recordings of Estelle singing lead, and here she is in front of large audiences just belting out songs beautifully. And the group only made one album. Lots of wasted potential with this group, with our without Ronnie. Thankfully the Beatles invited them on this tour and someone taped them.

      @@ralphabetsoup do you know what was used to record this? I have no idea what technology was available in 1966. I'm glad the recordings survived, though! It almost sounds like an outdoor concert, but I see the Maple Leaf Gardens is/was an indoor arena. But yes I do love her voice as well; you can hear some of her and Nedra on some of their live performances but these three vids of yours are the best. I see no reason they couldn't have traded off verses, two of them sung together, etc.--but then again I'm not a producer. I also like the little bit of Estelle and Nedra talking to the audience between songs.
      Excuse the book-length post but when Ronnie tried to get everyone back together in the early 70s, that is when they needed a manager/agent to really get their footing. Estelle and Ronnie together in some way (probably vastly different than the Ronettes) would've been really cool.

      You may already have/know this, but a set list of all the bands from this day. If this is accurate, the Ronettes played Shout, Be My Baby, this one, Land of 1,000 Dances, Walking in the Rain, and What'd I Say. Then they closed with interviews with fans, which would've been awesome to hear.

      Same could be said of many other girl groups, but it wasn't largely done at the time. How about Mary Wilson of the Supremes? Great voice. Nothing against Diana Ross, but it wouldn't have hurt them none to let the other two take a few leads. Just sayin'.

      It's been available on boot CD since 2008. But I didn't hear it until recently. I had tried to listen to the Beatles' set many years ago - but the music is drowned out by screaming fans. A few months back, a picture of Jimi Hendrix backing the Ronettes surfaced, taken in 1966. I wondered what the Ronettes would have sounded like live with a small band, and then I remembered the Toronto recording. I had never listened to the Ronette's set because I figured the whole show consisted of screams (like the Beatles' set), but, lo and behold, the audience is relatively quiet for the opening acts.
      I was amazed by how GREAT the Ronettes sounded with the small band (Remains) and how the pure voices really shined together and apart. And instead of being engulfed by the Wall Of Sound (like on recordings), the backing voices become the wall of sound orchestrations themselves.
      The original taper was a lawyer who took his kids to the show and even interviewed fans before and after the show.

      @@ralphabetsoup I came across these vids about a month ago, but kind of dismissed them because they didn't sound good from my iPhone's speakers. But listening to them with good speakers/ear buds is a totally different experience. I gather in '67 they were frustrated and disbanded after the Germany tour, but I wish Estelle had gotten with a band and made some music. I don't know all of her post-Ronettes forays, other than The Year 2000/The Naked Boy which were different and interesting--based off her singing lead here, she could've gone on and done greater things with her voice.

    • @ralphabetsoup
      @ralphabetsoup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've heard a couple of the spoken-word tunes Estelle recorded after the Ronettes. They don't show off her great singing voice, unfortunately.
      I thought the group broke up in 1967, but I've seen it listed that they played in London in early 1968. Too bad there aren't other recordings circulating of their live shows from 1966-1968. I wonder if Nedra and Estelle got the occasional lead vocal when Ronnie was around. I'm guessing that it was probably only on this Beatles tour that they got the opportunity to show their lead vocal talents - and in front of massive crowds of 16K to 45K.

      @@ralphabetsoup Ronnie went to California in late 1963 to record "Baby I Love You" while Estelle, Nedra, and Elaine did the tour with Dick Clark. I'd love to hear recordings of that. I actually have a lot of questions that couldn't possibly be answered, like how they felt about Ronnie not being there, how the group dynamics changed, etc.
      One thing for sure, you take away the "Wall of Sound" and everything takes on a new life. And then we have Estelle and Nedra taking the songs to different places. Like with the first line of the song here, Estelle added a "Oh no, no-no-no." I haven't done in-depth research but I don't think that's in the original, nor in Cher's version that she released this same year.

    • @ralphabetsoup
      @ralphabetsoup  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      So Estelle/Nedra/Elaine had toured as the Ronettes before? Cool. Would love to hear something from that tour as well. Nedra could possibly answer some of those questions regarding what it was like without Ronnie around.
      Maybe they played a few of the older songs live back in 1963 that they played in '66. 'What I'd Say' seemed to be a set staple. Dusty Springfield's recording of WYSLMT from '64 has some 'oh'oh'os' at the end of verse lines, but Estelle does them up more.
      This arrangement of WYSLMT is different from any other version I've heard so far in that it has two middle eights - the 'Tonight with words unspoken...' section; the other versions don't have that part repeated; here, Estelle gets to sing her heart out in this section - twice, and it really adds a powerful reinforcement to this version of the song.
