- This is a clip of the last interview that music producer Phil Spector has done. I am not sure who owns this clip i found it on another video platform and decided to upload it to youtube. Phillip Harvey Spector (born Harvey Phillip Spector, December 26, 1939) is an American record producer, musician, and songwriter who developed the Wall of Sound, a music production formula he described as a Wagnerian approach to rock and roll. Spector was dubbed the "First Tycoon of Teen" by writer Tom Wolfe[1] and is acknowledged as one of the most influential figures in pop music history.[2] After the 1970s, Spector mostly retired from public life. In 2009, he was convicted of second-degree murder and has remained incarcerated since.[3]
Born in the Bronx, Spector began his career in 1958 as co-founder, guitarist, and vocalist of the Teddy Bears, penning their US number-one single "To Know Him Is to Love Him". In 1960, he co-founded Philles Records, and at the age of 21, became the youngest ever US label owner to that point.[4] Over the next several years, he wrote, co-wrote, or produced records for acts such as the Ronettes and the Crystals, and later, John Lennon and George Harrison of the Beatles. He often employed what would become known as "the Wrecking Crew" as his de facto house band while collaborating with arranger Jack Nitzsche, engineer Larry Levine, and various Brill Building songwriters. Spector's other chart-topping singles include "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (co-written and produced for the Righteous Brothers, 1964), "The Long and Winding Road" (produced for the Beatles, 1970), and "My Sweet Lord" (produced for Harrison, 1970).
Spector is considered the first auteur among musical artists for the unprecedented freedom and control he had over every phase of the recording process. Additionally, he helped engender the idea of the studio as an instrument,[5] the integration of pop art aesthetics into music (art pop),[6] and the art rock genre.[7] His honors include the 1973 Grammy Award for Album of the Year for co-producing Harrison's Concert for Bangladesh (1971), a 1989 induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and a 1997 induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.[8] In 2004, Rolling Stone magazine ranked Spector number 63 on their list of the "100 Greatest Artists of All Time".[9] According to BMI, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" is the song that received the most US airplay in the 20th century. - บันเทิง

Did Phil Spector ever participate in any recorded interviews whilst he was in Prison?

Watching Spector interviews through the ages it's pretty clear he had a limited at best relationship with reality. This is probably the most coherent I've seen him

Its tragic Phil Spector made the choices he did. He left such a complicated legacy. His actions as an individual range from appalling to unforgivable but his impact on music will likely never be replicated. If theres one positive thing to remember about Phil Spector more then his writing and production, he used his fame to champion for black and female artists at a time when few did. His contributions to music deserve to live forever through the artists that sang them.

@@nigel900 But in general we don't know enough to judge anybody's whole personality, we know so little what is behind man's behaviour to say he is evil. He can do evil things, but in which condition he may have done those evil things, maybe he was high in drugs for example. If so, we must also judge the drugs which change people's personality or at least those who think drugs are just a harmless enjoyment to take and so on. We can easily judge each another, but how correct it is considering how wrongly people often judge other people and in the process forgetting how innocent their own life is to judge anybody, and that makes it rather difficult to judge people's motives correctly, that I was meaning with my words...

You said quite easily about evil heart pointing clearly to Phil Spector, but one crime doesn't necessarily make a person evilhearted the same way as for example mafia gangsters, who are killing people numerously and continuing their killing just like doing their daywork. There you can see the real evil heart in practice...!

True... Spector was definitely an asshole.
It takes a lifetime to build a good reputation, but only seconds to ruin it.
The thing is, his legacy was set before the murder. He was a huge influence on so many musicians and the entire recording industry, he changed the way we create music. So when he killed Lana Clarkson, none of that went away and we still remember him for the music. But him being a murderer, that's something that should always come first, how he was always crazy and that it was only a matter of time before he killed someone.

I think most of the acts Spector worked with had crazy stories of him chasing people with guns......... Dee Dee Ramone had a gun held to his head by Spector and predicted he was going to end up killing some one in the very early 80's.
There are so many Phil Spector gun stories they do tend to merge into one but Lennon said Spector fired a gun a couple of inches away from his ear, he said “Phil, if you’re going to kill me, kill me. But don’t f**k with my ears. I need ‘em.” there was a second incident where Spector ran through the corridors of his studio waving a gun at JL because Lennon had decided to call it a day without Spectors say so. As far as i'm aware nearly every one that ever worked with Spector had a story involving a gun in the studio.
There's a video of one of their sessions, on TH-cam, where Yoko is also there. And Phil seems VERY VERY patient and forthcoming.
All those stories about Phil. As if he did nothing else but run around the studio waving a gun at people.
Same amount of crazy stories could probably be circulated about any of us! I myself have certainly been acting like a madman at times. Does that make me mad at all times? No.
Now, has Phil gone VERY stubborn and indignated as an old-timer? Sure. And his demeanor / personality has probably scared away many friends throughout the years. So he's become more and more alone, and more and more semi-paranoid towards the world. Can happen to many people with his level of success and celeb-status.

Spector has always had an ego (it's why he was so good) but he also had a narcissistic side....... honestly he was a nasty piece of work who thought he was so powerful he could shoot someone dead and get away with it. He was the best producer of the time which is why people put up with him but MANY artists saw the murder coming and i don't think there are many who don't have a crazy story of Phill Spector (not all necessarily with guns).

True story: I saw him at Ralphs in Alhambra in 2004 (Maybe 2005 not sure). Had the crazy wig on and platform shoes and I instantly recognized him. We were by the eggs and he was opening each carton and taking eggs out and putting them in another carton that he had open and set down. Dude had like 4 cartons opened and I guess was getting the best ones to consolidate into one? I turn to my gf at the time and whisper "that's phil spector". Just as I say that, he turns around and gives me one of the scariest staredowns of my life. I was frozen and all I could muster was an awkward "excuse me", grabbed a carton and just about jogged outta there with my gf. To this day I remember that face.
By then, he had lost most of what mental facilities he had left. You're lucky he didn't "egg" you. Sad little man with a black heart.
I heard "to know him is to love him" as a teenager. No other song ever moved me more during that period of my life. I still have the 78-rpm recording of it I acquired immediately after it came out. I still play that song in between French, French Canadian and Neapolitan songs of my collections. My thanks to a tortured genius who made important gifts to music. Now, he has found peace.
I can appreciate what he did for the music industry. But, to ignore that he killed an innocent woman and say he found "peace " is a little inappropriate and insensitive. I'm not G-d, so idk if he found peace or if he's being held accountable for his actions. That's not for us to know. I do hope the woman that he killed is at peace.

That’s a wonderful story. My grandfather owned a recording studio in Hollywood back in the 60s and 70s. I remember the magic of people making records. When you recorded a song and got a pressing of the single in your hand, that really meant something. That magic is now lost, it has been cheapened. Too many levels of undo in the digital age makes it so that no one has to commit to anything.
Wrote that song for his father, who had committed suicide...which is also enscripted on his father's headstone..

People surrounding Specter liked to think of him as eccentric. He was actually certifiable and dangerous and should have been institutionalized before he hurt someone. But no one would do it because he was Phil Specter.

Here 7 hours after hearing that he left this earth (Jan.17/21) from complications from covid-19 while in prison. It's a shame the incredible legacy of innovation he created will forever be tainted by his criminal act. Nothing wrong if you still choose to enjoy his work. Just remember Lana Clarkson as well.
Acts* threatened people at gun point, had his kids perform sexual acts on his girlfriends and threatened to hire a hitman on his ex wife when she came looking for custody

He was superbly brilliant on so many levels. He did suffer from a “little man” complex and other mental health issues. He was highly OCD which in the end prob helped his creativity. That fine line between madness and genius is indeed fine. Microscopic, actually. To be simply categorized as a murderer is very sad. Indeed, he took the life of a beautiful, innocent woman. There’s no forgiveness for that. Yet his music legacy cannot be denied. Not just production. He wrote some of the most popular songs of the 20th Century. He will always be remembered for the murder, yet I do believe that he suffered from mental illness, probably misdiagnosed or undiagnosed for years. Then his ego and power came into the situation and everything turned ugly. It’s a sad sad situation indeed. He ended two lives that morning. His victim and his own.

With all the stories I've heard of him threatening others with guns, and him living in the anti gun state CA to boot, it seems to me the authorities should have stripped him of his gun rights long before he murdered Lana Clarkson. But I suspect his money protected him from that, as is often the case with the wealthy and their access to guns where commoners can't have them. If somebody could have separated the man from his guns for his own good, then in addition to Lana being spared, his musical legacy could have been largely untarnished given he had lived down his abuse of Ronnie Spector.

His father committed suicide when Phil was 11; his mother was over-protective, controlling, and emotionally and psychologically abusive. He was small and frail and he was bullied. The fact that he was able to pull any of this off is nothing short of a miracle.
Thats the sad truth of phil's time here.
While that's all true, the fact remains that he pulled of much evil in his life as well. Between the abuse his wives and children suffered at his hands and him murdering someone, those are all aspects of his life that were very real and true too and shouldn't go unmentioned. When people talk about him, they should talk about everything he did, not just the good. Frankly, it's a slap in his victims face to not mention those things!

In the end, he was a troubled man due to the over indulgences he was able to feed himself with, along with the heavy doses of drugs. He didn't even blink in the end. Looked like a startled human being. Probably a foresight of where and what he would see after death in my opinion.

As brilliant as Phil was, in the end, he just had to deconstruct his life. Two lives were ended. That’s tragedy. His remarks here are accurate and insightful.

He was close friends with Lenny Bruce . Massive drug abuse led to paranoia , then psychosis .

What’s odd is that he doesn’t that scary in interviews. But then you read the stories about him and how much of a sick duranged he is. I think what makes Spector so eerie in my eyes is that he was extremely unpredictable.

I think that it is easy to say something about someone that nobody really knew. What we know about the man is he produced a ton of music. Music even outside of his groups like the Ronettes, Crystals, etc that faired very well on the music charts. We know his dad was dead when Phil was just a young kid. We know that he was found guilty of killing Lana. The rest, in my opinion, is just one side of the story. Lana never got to tell her side of the story, I don't recall ever hearing Phil's version of what happened with the Ramones inside his house. Nor do I think he ever spoke of his marriage to Veronica in retort to the accusations that she couldn't leave the house. Personally, I feel that there are a lot more to these stories that are untold so therefore cannot be accurately judged. What I see is a man that was constantly dealing with not having his dad around, feeling that everything he did wasn't good enough, and scared to death of losing anything or anyone that he cared about. I am not excusing any behaviors because of something he was dealing with or never sought help to deal with. I am just simply saying that we weren't there, we didn't live his life and so we shouldn't make a statement such as calling him a "perverted Hobbit" without knowing full well that is what he was.

I love The Beatles' Let It Be (Naked) much more than the Phil Spector production of the original Let It Be album. On the inside you can read that this is how The Beatles really wanted it to sound, just like four guys playing in the garage. Anybody who didn't hear that one should really try! When someone is described as a “flawed genius” Phil Spector immediately comes to mind. His music will last me to my grave , and for that I thank him. Mad man or not.

I always "assumed" my two heroes, Casey Kasem & Phil Spector; that their works were perfect & always in order, but when I found out that what I considered my greatest "work" on October 1st of 2022, was both flawed & ill-prepared, it proved to me that indeed NO man is either "perfect" or indispensable.

He had his influence everywhere in the 60's. He was even on the airplane with the Beatles when they first came to the US. Ronettes were probably the group he had the most influence on, but to produce the Righteous Brothers hits and Lennon and Harrison put you in the major league. But, as with a lot of geniuses, he blew it all.

People like Joe Meek (in the UK) also were achieving similar results simultaneously. I think what put Spector ahead of his competition was his business connections. It was/is an ugly industry with some VERY rough people...Phil got these people to work in his favor. It made him rich,famous and put him in a position to work with The Beatles,John Lennon etc But ....a few years after his heydey...on his own....Phil pulls a gun on Lennon...redoes the music on Let it Be (which McCartney thought was ghastly)..and noone wanted to deal with him. Phil had talents, but I don't think he developed them after an initial point. What he did was furthered in the 70s well beyond anything Phil had done. Phil was first and earliest..essential...but he couldnt/didnt keep up.

You have to remember what this man did. One of the most respected at one point and still is in a sense, cause of all he did and brought to the table. Fate turned into unimaginable and inexplicable things. He lost his mind. His creative mind went haywire and the stories and updates kept getting worse and worse.

For those watching, it was announced by the New York Times (albeit there are better sources) that Phil Died at the age of 81. While I do have my gripe about him, he did create some of the best music in the biz from the Ronettes to the Ramones (Albeit through Joey Ramone and no one else) to even John Lennon and the beatles, of whome would go on to be legends in the biz. Not only that, but, depending how you view it, he practically had the whole "Corrupt Producer" character in spades. Guy apparently had guns that he would normally point at whomever he was working with. DeeDee Ramone, during an interview in 1982, had tiny comment about his gun habits. Depending on how you viewed these habits, this may helped people recognize that there was something wrong with the biz.
All in all, he was legend who was punished and stripped of that status when he committed murder. Shame too, with the way he was going he would not only lived a legend, it could've been possible he would've died a legend in a legendary way. Sorry Phil, legends is a title you don't taint. Hopefully god has a forgiving heart for you. See ya around.

Seemed as though he lived a very precious, yet productive life. He met who he did. Did what he did. He musically effected some very famous people’s careers, and did go somewhere in his life. And his demons were lock step with him too. And that part was sadly…an…awful…twist of fate. Life can get very far away from you if you aren’t careful. Some thin lines can sever the way we think.
It wasn’t a productive life. He spent more years doing nothing/debauchery than producing music. The first time he retired was in his twenties. He came out of retirement a few times, then finally stopped by 1980.

What many non-artistic people don't get, is that exactly THE SAME MIND of the artist, is responsible for both the good and bad ways it is expressed. People often seem to think that Brian Wilson would/could have created his masterpieces if he didn't go bonkers. Not the case. He went bonkers because his mind is the mind of a genius / great artist. One with an obsessive, fragile mind. Same goes for Phil Spector.
Whatever he ended up doing (or not doing... Personally I believe it was a tragic accident that happened while two people were crazy drunk and foolin' around) - does not take ANYTHING away from his artistic accomplishments throughout his long life.
What I'm saying is: you can't always have one without the other. At times yes (George Martin), but not always.
And yes: that accident would've never happened had he not owned guns. Yet again, people only see the GUNS and stories about him chasing Lennon around the studio, etc. They don't see the PERSON. What brought them there. Phil Spector got robbed or mugged at some point early on. After which he began carrying, and felt a need to show he was in control - not to be messed with. Not ok, of course. But only if you've tried getting robbed/mugged/beaten'up like he (and I) have, will you understand how the human mind can react, subsequently. I was in therapy for years to get past that stuff. And yes, before I succeeded at that, it also influenced me to behave very badly at times.
