The Ferrari California is a STEAL UNDER $100K

  • The Ferrari California can easily be found for under $100K right now, and at that price, it might be the Ferrari you've been waiting for. Yes, it's not the mid engine V8 or even the front engine V12's, but it's just as much a Ferrari as those cars, and has the performance numbers to back it up. The grand touring setup provides far better comfort than most other Ferraris, but a touch of practicality yet still going fast as hell with a 0-60 in 3.8 seconds!

    Cali30 owner here in the UK. Fantastic car, people really need to drive one before deciding whether it's a real Ferrari or not. It's different to a 430 or 458 but it doesn't try to imitate those models. The smile on your face all the way through your video is how I feel every time I take it out. Great vid as always.....

    The California was sold in the US for model years 2010 - 2012, had 453 HP, and did 0 - 60 in 3.9 seconds. The California 30 added 30 more horsepower at 483 HP and was sold in the US for model years 2013 -2014. The California T (turbo) had 553 HP and was sold in the US for model years 2015 - 2018. The Portofino replaced the California T starting in model year 2019, has 591 HP, and goes 0 - 60 in 3.5 seconds.

    I own a 2010 California Mirabeau blue with the crema interior. Beautiful car and gets lots of attention. However I get sick of people saying it’s not a true Ferrari. It shares most of its parts with the 430 and 458. It was fun to watch how you were skeptical at first and then your mind slowly changed as you drove it. It’s a seductive car. Definitely one of the better reviews I’ve seen on the California. Keep up the good work!

    Great review and thank you very much! I am 25 years old and from Beijing and I just bought a Cali. Ferraris are expensive in China due to the taxes and other issues, but a used Cali is under my budget. I totally love my Cali, a delicate balance between speed and comfort. Cruising around town at night with the roof open is totally elegant and mind-blowing! Yes, some may argue that it is not a Ferrari, but it drives and sounds like a Ferrari. Not everyone wants a hard-core supercar, right? My next goal would be an F-12 and hopefully, I'll get it in three years. Love from China!

    I like the car except for the way the exhaust tips are stacked on an angle. They need to be horizontal. The performance is there, so to hell with the haters. Also, it's made to be a GT car, not a track car. Track cars are fun for about an hour, then you want to see your chiropractor. I prefer a car I can drive all the time without it beating me up.

    I recently bought my first Ferrari which is a 2010 California and just like Dan, I have not been able to get rid of the smile on my face every time I get behind the wheel. Mine is in the TDF Blue which is my favorite Ferrari color. I also made a minor mod (via Ferrari Chat) where the brake lights are now part of the two top tail lights. Like the turn signals, the brake lights by default are by the turn signals as Dan pointed out. The car now looks more Ferrari-like with the middle LED and two top tail lights going on when you press the brake. With the openly honest reviews like Dan's, Doug DeMuro and JayEmm, the California is finally getting the respect that it deserves and is truly a great Ferrari Grand Tourer that will not disappoint when you get to actually sit in it and take it for a spin.

    They are brilliant cars, a bit less intense than the mid-engined models but just as quick in the real world and more comfortable when you're just enjoying the ride. It's the styling that puts some people off, especially when Ferrari made no attempt to disguise that enormous rear, and in fact made it worse by stacking the exhausts, which just emphasises the height at the back. The later Cali T was a small improvement in looks but the Portofino is much more successfully styled. The PF is also 400lb lighter and has another 100+ BHP so it's a seriously fast car when you want it to be. The steering has also been programmed to be much pointier. But yeah, I drove the original Cali when it came out and as a driver's car it is by no means 'girlie'; it's less hardcore and so more accessible to everyone. Good review.

    The sound when the valves open is giving me goosebumps!
    The uncomfortable upright position in the back seat must be due to the rollover protection that is positioned near the passenger's neck. They thus force you to bend forward so that in case the sensors tell that the car is rolling over and the protection is shot out (ignited by explosives) your neck is not in the way. At least that is the official explanation for my Porsche 997 softtop. Might be the same here.

    Make no mistake this is 100% Ferrari. No doubt about it. BUT it's more civil than any other Ferrari made. I was lucky enough to drive and own an F40 in the 90's. It was a beast of a car. The F40 is not a daily driver (trust me). The Californian is the type of car where you can throw two small suit cases in the back seat, put the top down and take off for a cross country drive. In the early summer or early fall when the weather is really nice, it is the most relaxing experience you will have. Oh yeah, if you have the need for speed, the Californian has plenty of that on tap. That's my experience.

  • @chrisridebike8
    @chrisridebike8 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Great videos. But @1:15, “direct port injection” is not a thing. It’s either direct injection (directly into the combustion chamber), port injection (where fuel and air both run down the intake port and over the intake valve), or direct AND port injection (usually aftermarket on a DI car where the stock DI system cannot keep up with the fuel demands of an aftermarket super/turbocharger). The last is a combo of both and usually has twice as many injectors as cylinders. For example, an inline 6 would have twelve fuel injectors, six spraying fuel directly into the combustion chambers and six spraying fuel into the intake ports. Some manufacturers are starting to do the “both” thing to keep intake valves clean and lessen carbon buildup

    In my opinion, the best looking Ferrari of the last years
    Mid engined cars (except the 458) look too busy
    Allways liked the idea of a drop top Ferrari, albeit it has it flaws
    Mainly too much unnecessary weight from the complex hard top mechanism (and it makes the rear of the car too high) and it could do with a soft top, a v12 and a manual transmission to be a modern reinterpretation of the 250 gt california
    On the other hand, a used 1st gen Handling can be a great car

    After driving this and the Granturismo, do you feel any similarities? Asking because Pininfarina supposedly designed the GT but Ferrari took the design for the California when they ditched Maserati.

    Drove this car for week, enjoyed it, I almost bought one. Then I drove a Porsche 718, and went with the 718. The 718 handles way better than this car, and it's a lot lighter as well. Plus the 718 comes with a 4 year warranty for the price of a used California with no warranty.

    Another great video. I find it funny how so many say the California is a good wife's car when so many dudes drive like their wives on backroads. We're having a grand old time on our sportbikes until we come upon exotic drivers parking it in the corners. They hit it in the straights, but your wife can do that too. I don't like the way the California looks, but I would not feel bad at all if a used Portofino was my first Ferrari.

    If you want a Ferrari where you just want to drive and enjoy it. The Californian is for you. Comfort, performance, convertible is all world class. The best part of driving a Californian would be on Sunday morning driving where you just get on the highway and just drive !!!!!! Very cool and very relaxing.

    I test drove this car in September when I was in the market for a car. Its a beautiful car and its fast. The one I test drove was a 2010 with 17k miles and list price of about $100k. I loved the car, but in the end, I went for the Lexus LC 500 for two reasons. I didn't want to own a Ferrari out of warranty and I didn't think it would be a good look to show up at work with because it would draw too much attention. Where I work, management isn't ostentasious. The only thing wrong with the car was the leather was pulling back from the top dash a little bit. Nothing that couldn't be fixed and I understand that its common for these cars.

    • @normalguysupercar
      @normalguysupercar  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes the leather tends to pull frequently in Ferraris, especially if you live somewhere hot

    The main problem with the California is the looks especially the rear. For $100k you have a lot of options. I’d take a preowned Mercedes AMG GTCA for about the same price.

    For clarification, when one is impressed by the acceleration, almost everyone says "this car is fast". Fast refers to mph (e.g., "this car is fast because it has a top speed in excess of 180 mph".) When impressed by the acceleration, one should say "this car is QUICK". Sorry, I'm not ragging you, I'm just trying to help you to be above the others.

    The California is quite interesting. Now in the UK you can find the California at around the same price as the F430s... so if I was to spend 70k I think I would go for the F430. But what makes it more interesting is that you can get an Audi R8 V8 Manual for 30k (GBP always)...

    People that say a Ferrari , is "not a real Ferrari" have no clue ! If it were made by Ferrari, then it's a Ferrari ! It could be said, that any Ferrari that's not V12 and front engine, is not a Ferrari...Oh Please. That would mean even Dan's 458 is not a real Ferrari. But it is. Ferrari build plate...then it's a Ferrari !

  • @Zyworski

    It is not only the weight of the Ferrari California that undermines the handling it is also top-heavy. The Ferrari California is a Ferrari with a wet sump 😳and that is why the engine is situated higher. Oil changes and checking the oil are going to be a breeze.

    Dan and Megan's cup holder argument was very funny. Dan three hours of research and Megan Zero hours, LOL. That car would suit me and my kids. we are petite thin small people. Italians are small petite people. Our average height is 5'5" and about 150lbs. Although when I lived in Italy (with the US Navy) I saw very little exotics driving around all thru Sicily. I decided to buy the Maserati Granturismo because it has lots of legroom in the backseat, is also a good grocery-getter because of trunk space. My kids and friends enjoy the Maserati. Great unbiased review from Megan and Dan. I would buy it, yes, because it fits me.
