    Is the reflector plate on backwards? Seems like the convex side should be toward the light source.

    • @jeffreyklaum13
      @jeffreyklaum13 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      I sorta have the same question. I have the xl version of this and always play around with orientation but dont see a huge difference. The concave part of that disk has a rough rumbled tin foil sort of texture on it. The convex side is shiny smooth. To me it makes more sense for the light to hit the concave side first as to use the texture to spread the light more. Help us out Westcott ;)

      orsersco As a person who owns this box and has setup the beauty dish he did put the plate in backwards. I am sure putting in a quick video while trying to do a senior portrait just had him running too fast.

    • @mscottc1964
      @mscottc1964 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +orsersco No, he puts it on correctly. Watch other youtube videos on a beauty dish and you will see all the pros put it that way. In fact, many beauty dishes have a reflector screwed into place and it is as he installed it. Why?Beauty dishes are generally small and the point is to pack a punch of light but at the same time be as soft as possible for such a small source / specular light. The MAIN POINT of the setup is that no direct light passes from the flash tube or speedlight directly to the subject, which would obviously be too harsh / specular, ALL THE LIGHT SHOULD BE REFLECTED FROM THE DISH. With the reflector set up the way you say, the light is simply pushed to the side at an angle forwards, some directly forwards, most with not much reflection (creating a hot circle of light around the edges and not much light from the center, not a soft light, huh?). Concave side towards the light reflects almost 100% of the light creating much softer / more even light.Why do they / Wescott tell you otherwise? It takes much more power to adequately light your subject this way, one (even two+) speedlights not going to cut it in daylight.

      @marcdaniele5305 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      it's on backwards.i own one and read the manual and the shiny side faces the flash to reflect the light more. it's a shame that I've seen many pros doing it wrong in TH-cam videos, but hey we all make mistakes

    • @guganotubo
      @guganotubo 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I see it working both ways, but as msc1963 pointed out, convex towards the light would be more punchy / less scattered. At that distance from the source, inside a parabolic umbrella, the light bounces around either way.
      If however, the reflector was conical, then absolutely pointy end towards the light.

    The beautifull photos are so retouched that it is not possible to see any difference between Beauty dish no diffusion and Octa Box w/both diffusion layers. It is not very helpfull.

  • @11aces11rr
    @11aces11rr 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How do you make the choice to diffuse or not diffuse? What's your thought process behind it?

  • @JLBA14
    @JLBA14 ปีที่แล้ว

    If I want the softest light possible with my OCTA-M
    do I add the diffusion plate too?
    Assuming I’m already shooting with both white diffusion covers.

    • @WestcottLighting
      @WestcottLighting  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes! the diffusion plate will further spread the light in your softbox.

    Matt how would an SB-910 perform with that Octabox in this situation? I have that flash and am curious.

    • @WestcottLighting
      @WestcottLighting  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. The XXL Rapid Box Matt is using is for studio Strobe. The Rapid Box Duo www.fjwestcott.com/32-rapid-box-duo is Westcott's largest speedlite version. The Duo's two mount positions would allow you to mount your SB-910 ,which you could use alone, or along with another flash to begin approaching the amount of light needed to get results similar to Matt's.

    Can the smaller 26 inch rapid box be used wit the Einstein E640 unit. Is a speed ring adaptor possible?

    • @WestcottLighting
      @WestcottLighting  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 26" Rapid Box Octa is designed for speedlites. However, we have a 24" Collapsible Beauty Dish, 36" Rapid Box XL, and 48" Rapid Box XXL that are compatible with Einstein/Alien Bees: fjwestcott.com/shop/light-modifiers/rapid-box

    Do I need anything special to use this with the Xplor 600 TTL (from Adorama) ?

    • @shaolin95
      @shaolin95 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      since they don't care to reply for anyone wondering, you need the Bowen version to fit the Xplor 600

    • @WestcottLighting
      @WestcottLighting  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry about the late reply. I missed this inquiry. You are correct that the XXL with Bowens mount is needed for the Xplor 600. The XXl has the mount built in so no additional rings or adapters are needed.

    What light stand are you using?

    • @WestcottLighting

      That appears to be the 13' heavy duty stand from Westcott. Since the video an upgrade to that stand has been introduced which can be found here www.fjwestcott.com/shop/accessories/stands-arms

      @heysalsaguy 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      It looks to me (and I could be wrong) that Matt Hernandez IS using an Einstein in the video with his rapid box, so I am guessing that yes, there is an adapter. (I apologize if I am wrong.)

    • @WestcottLighting
      @WestcottLighting  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching. Currently, the largest grid for a rapid box is for the Duo speedlite version www.fjwestcott.com/40-deg-grid-for-rapid-box-duo Westcott does not currently offer a grid for the XL and XXL versions.

    shooting at F6.3 you can tell he had to go crazy with the High Frequency Seperation 5:07 , Just do 1.4 so you don't have to have to over do it with high frequency seperation. Actually I want to say stop using HFS it's so obvious. ND8 filter removes 3 stop of light or use a NDX filter.
