  • Lightsaber battles, Smilo Ren and a few not-so-shocking deaths can't save a show that's already circling the drain.

    The most annoying thing about the cortosis is that it’s been used well before in Star Wars.
    There’s a comic (pre Disney, go figure) where a bunch of Jedi survivors set a trap for Vader in a spice mine in Kessel, by leaking that obi wan was hiding there. One of the Jedi masters, Shadday Potkin had a cortosis blade, and used it to deactivate Vader’s blade. While she was gloating, Vaders response was to go “cortosis, that’s annoying, and very rare. Kind of you to bring one to me” Snaps her neck, and uses the blade against the other Jedi. Because he’s Vader. Gimmicks don’t work on him for long. Also we have a “badass angry female padawan” who rushes Vader at the start. She lives approximately 3 seconds.
    Incidentally, that’s what I wanted the Kenobi series to be. Vader rampaging through the galaxy like a hurricane killing Jedi and Inquisitors and Rebels alike, trying to find where Kenobi is. Prime Vader “you have failed me inquisitor.” All of that. Obi-Wan on the other hand is trying his hardest to stay hidden, because he has a more important job to do than settle a grudge match with Anakin. He’s looking after Luke.

    • @chaosgyro
      @chaosgyro 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +13

      That wouldn't have ever worked because the Vader = Anakin retcon has the glaring plot hole of Kenobi and Skywalker living on Anakin's homeworld using their real names. 🤦‍♂️

      Yes, it was actually the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that did me in. It was so disappointing. They could’ve done so much with it. They wasted an opportunity by having Hayden and Ewen get back into it close to the shape as they were in for revenge of the Sith Instead they wasted it by telling us stories about Reva and Leia and Leah is definitely one of my lifetime favorites. I mean, I’m an OG girl. I don’t remember my first time seeing any of the movies but I do always remember playing Leah and being Leia they made me resent Leia, she just didn’t belong there. This was Luke’s story so the bait and switch to I don’t know to try to draw girls or make girls happy.
      no I was here to see the men that’s what they advertised plus, I messed up by reading some of the EU stuff about Kenobi and so I expected better stories. I know I’m done but gotta keep in mind. I love Mando one and two and this was coming right off Mando one and two. Of course they ruined Mando three and was it for me
      My most recent video focuses on the treatment of male fans. My comments have several from life long female fans like myself that are done too.

    The scene where Luke collapses in the blizzard on Hoth feels real because it was real. They filmed on a glacier in Norway in the middle of a blizzard, just yards away from their hotel. Cortosis was very well handled and very well established by a talented writer, Timothy Zahn, that made some of the best Star Wars novels. He also had creatures named ysalamir that created these.... bubbles... of dead space where the Force could not be felt or manipulated. All discovered on a single world where there were predator species that literally hunted via the Force. The Thrawn trilogy is fantastic.
    This use of cortosis in Acolyte is just another example of Disney taking good ideas of better men and bastardizing them just like they did with Grand Admiral Thrawn himself.

    • @Amoschp524
      @Amoschp524 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +33

      Correct, in the EU the Cortosis ore had severe downsides to being used as armor, you could not headbutt with a helmet of it like the Acolyte showed, Disney has made it on par with Beskar which is stupid.

    • @MN-jw7mm
      @MN-jw7mm 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      They were both really bad and a better writer wouldn't have needed them. Cortosis, Beskar, Ysalamari, Phrik, none of them should be in big-budget Star Wars projects. For the record, Force Storms that can destroy entire fleets and that stupid little Ghost Navy that Luke Skywalker created were also bad. George Lucas knew about all of these before creating the PT, and he had the rightful sense not to introduce any of them. Zahn wrote himself into a corner by making Force users more powerful than GL intended, so he needed something to "balance" out his own mistake.
      When Star Wars was first bought by Disney and they announced they were canning the EU, I thought the silver-lining was that they wouldn't be beholden to a Star Wars universe that had ridiculous shit like the aforementioned, but instead of cherry-picking the good stuff, they're cherry-picking the lamest elements of the EU.

    • @Amoschp524
      @Amoschp524 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      @@MN-jw7mm Zahn's Cortosis was a pretty balance for a unique material that was more of a curiosity that expanded the world than the anti jedi armor that Disney made it. How did Zhan make the Jedi more powerful than Lucas intended? The Trilogy and Duology made the Jedi more grounded and usually power down the Jedi. Did the EU have Dragonball type power level spikes for the Force, yes but it wasn't Zhan.
      Totally agree they are cherry picking the worst parts of the EU, that is why I can't watch most of it anymore because all I see is where the plagiarized from the EU and somehow made poor source material worse.

      If the Prequels have taught me anything it is that people will defend Star Wars so long as it has even the slightest tinge of sweetness, they only truly hate it when there is absolutely nothing. The Mandalorian also proved that, so many episodes were pointless filler or mediocre at best, but because it wasn't absolutely horrible people were gobbling it up.
      Episode 5 was a lot more like Star Wars then every other episode of The Acolyte, but to say it was "Star Wars" is like saying a pile of shit is ice cream because it actually once was ice cream. I can't quite blame the fans though, I think we've been dying for good Star Wars media for far too long now.

    Agree with Mauler, and I've commented this many times. The fight between Luke and Vader in Empire is by FAR the best sabre fight in Star Wars because of what it SAYS in the scenes. At first Vader is basically submissive, he doesn't want to kill Luke, he wants to capture him and return him to the Emperor. That's WHY he tests the Carbonite on Han! He's even fighting one handed. He has zero respect for Luke's abilities. It's only when Luke gets a hit on him that he gets angry and starts using 2 hands, and he's over it. Even though Luke's doing his best, Vader unleashes his anger and cuts his arm off. Only THEN does he get control and once again try to convert Luke, eventually revealing that he's his father. Which by the way, NOBODY believed in 1980. Everyone thought it was just a ruse to trick Luke. Then we had to wait 3 years until Jedi to know it was true. THIS is how you do sword/sabre fights in movies. You tell a STORY.

      Agree with everything you said.... EXCEPT I still like the duel in Jedi the best. At that point we've seen Luke complete his character arc and it's really the second and third most powerful force users in the Galaxy dueling it out in front of the most powerful. Vader had to fight harder than in Empire, but overall he had the upper hand because of Luke's compassion for him that caused him to hold back and lower his guard, but then Vander yucked it up by threatening Leia. It was only then that Luke lost control and let his rage make him strong enough to beat Vader down with sheer violence.... and then at the last second before chopping his head off like he did in Dagobah swamp (dooming himself in the process to the Dark Side) he sees his wounded father, robotic hand severed just like his own was in Empire and he realized... "I'm becoming him!" Only then does Luke cast away his light saber and face the Emperor with complete vulnerability Then the capstone is when Vader, seeing his son dying at the Emperor's hands before his eyes, flips the tables on the Emperor and kills him (forever, Palpatine never "somehow" returned... that movie does not exist), sacrificing himself in the process.
      Soooooo many high stakes in that last duel and the climax. Father and Son dueling for the fate of the universe and themselves. The Light side triumphs over the Dark. Good wins. Evil is vanquished at a high cost.... YAY!!!!
      It's only later when you think over the timeline that the duel didn't matter much.... Han's team deactivated the shield and the rebels blew up the Death Star anyway. Everyone on there: Luke, Vader, Emperor.... they would've gone ka-blooey in about 10 minutes regardless of who won. But it mattered because we saw Luke almost fall into Darkness and Vader's redemption. That's why it mattered.

    • @EdwardsTaicho

      The duel in Empire is also the best of the franchise because it handles one thing that the rest of the series either forgets or neglects.
      Lightsabers are fucking dangerous. No flashy flips and flourishes. It looks more like two fencers, carefully probing the other's defenses and just attempting to land a strike. ANY strike. As even a touch will cause severe damage to your enemy.

    The main problem with the Cortosis is that it is not set up properly as a plot element. In the Mandalorian, Beskar has enough exposition so that you understand how durable it is, and then when we see characters in Beskar tanking hits, it makes sense. Here, Smilo Ren shrugs off direct blows from lightsabers, causes the weapons to malfunction, and there's no explanation given. And no amount of "Ermm, Akshooally...🤓" is going to fix that because most normies are either going to be like: "They nerfed lightsabers again" or "Why don't they mass-produce this armour?" and just baffled in general because it's not properly set up or explained in-universe..

Much like how in real (Lucas) SW fire happened in space as well sound, the problem is not the 'thing' itself but how disney wars (mis)uses these 'things' in their stories and how weak their basic story telling is - they tell us things they should be showing us and show us things they should be telling us.

    Cortosis is actually an interesting material, not complete bullshit like beskar. The showrunners are retarded, so they made it into an impossible material.
    I believe Cortosis is a mineral, not a metal, making it very hard to work with. Being a mineral also makes it very brittle. Cortosis blades would usually be a normal metal blade with a sliver of cortosis in the edge area, great for lightsaber fights but mostly useless for everything else. And in good fashion of the writing, jedi have no idea what cortosis is or what properties it has, so they keep attacking his helmet and his vambraces.
    I find very hard to believe jedi would not know what cortosis is and what it does to a lightsaber beam. In one of the legends comics, right after Order 66, Vader starts hunting down the last remaining Jedi. And a group of them lays a trap for him. He is casually steamrolling them, until one of them pulls off a cortosis enhanced blade and shutsdown his lightsaber. This only pisses Vader off and he just force pulls her with massive power and one handed strangles her to death. Yes the EU comics are grea (not the Filoni shit though)
    And one last thing. Jecki actually uses her lightsaber hilt to break the mask, not her elbow. Of couse its the only instance the helmet could appear to be brittle, but still takes two hits to break.
    I was kinda glad to see cortosis appear in a live action StarWars show, but its really sad that its in a show with this quality.

      Cortosis alloy is relatively common in video games. It shows up in the KotOR games (which a WotC rulebook establishes is why the material is so rare: All the mines were depleted back when enemy lightsaber was a real threat, and nobody bothers with new ones when enemy lightsabers aren't a thing anymore), a few games set in the Clone Wars, and some other stuff.
      Pure cortosis, which disables lightsabers, was only ever shown (instead of described in text) in some comic books.

    Drinker makes the crucial point so many seem to miss. A Star Wars fight is not really about how good the choreography is. It's about INVESTMENT in the outcome of that fight. Investment in terms of the work done to build up tension, investment in the characters involved, the stakes that are presented, everything that came together to lead up to a dramatic point. Even animated fights, such as Rebels Obi-Wan vs Maul, understood this. That 2min scene in Rebels eclipses anything seen here in 20min of live action. So Disney have understood this in the past, so has Filoni, they are just choosing not to do the work anymore.

    Most of the acting and script for this series is just not very good... though, episode 5 was a step in the right direction (it was the most Star Wars feeling episode). The 3rd episode was horrible. The other episodes have been below OK. I was relieved to see Yord Fandar character ended (he was weak and didn't add anything to the series). I also didn't care much for the Jacki Lon character, based on all previous episodes... however, I was slightly sad when she was killed off (after seeing her excellent combat skills). It was stupid (I would say surprising, but this shit show is not very surprising) that Sol didn't know that Mae traded places with Osha. I understand he is emotional at this point, but Mae cutting her hair with a lightsaber like that wouldn't necessarily make her look exactly like Osha. Besides, Osha and Mae have different "vibes" and body movements that a Jedi Master should have picked up on. Is Cortosis a rip off of Adamantium and Vibranium??? WTF?

  • @xel1673
    @xel1673 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    "They were willing to kill off fairly important characters."
    Were they even fairly important, tho? They were barely characters. More like props, like Osha's pocket droid. They accomplished nothing of any substance (aside from being idiots and doing everything to allow SmiloRen to get away and escape in Ep2) in the episodes they were in. Jecki or Yord did less than Osha's pocket droid. The only thing that makes them unique is they have names and spoke words. Their characterization was inconsistent and superficial. Will they ever be brought up again in any meaningful way? Their deaths barely registered on Sol or Osha's emotional radar. In the end, they were things to build up Osha (like exposition), and their deaths were to build up SmiloRen as the baddie.
    But, more importantly, their deaths were 100% required to aid the ridiculous Parent Trap switcheroo at the end the writers seemed to really really want. The switch couldn't work if they lived. So which was more important to the writers/showrunners? Them as characters, or getting the Osha/Mae switch plotline in the show?
    It will really reveal if they even mattered in-story to the characters in any substantial way or to the writers themselves if these characters are ever brought up again and how.
    But the fact Sol walked off without addressing their deaths or even bothering to check them shows an indifference (primarily by the writers) to the characters, all unceremoniously sacrificed to serve the plot revolving around Mae, Osha, and Sol. It is highly likely the writers never cared about the characters and are really only hyper-focused on the Mae-Osha storyline, which continues to refuse to be remain consistent. They couldn't have Sol stopping to check everyone for signs of life, mourn his dead allies and/or give them a funeral because that would damage the identity switch plotline when fake-Osha is having to pretend to be her sister in Sol's immediate company. Even they probably knew that would stretch the boundaries of believability that Sol wouldn't pick up on that in such a character-driven scene. Or they just didn't care about the characters.
    I think they wanted an identity switch plot and probably get Osha to Coruscant, thus needed to get Mae-as-Osha to wherever they need her to go for next forced scene to take place as quickly as possible. And all those Jedi couldn't be alive for this story to happen. So they axed them. Not really caring that this doesn't make sense as far as how the characters would reaction, or how it might negatively reflect on Sol's character. The only thing that matters is getting Mae alone with Sol and wherever else they want the plot to go. And they sure as heck felt more of a need to have as much action and flashy-flash in ep5 and zero in character focus aside from Mae/Osha.
    Honestly, Yord and Jecki mattered to the The Acolyte show as much as the unnamed Jedi did. They existed to fill out the ranks until they weren't needed anymore.

    EU cannon for Cortosis basically can be summed up as this:
    It’s a really rare resource that exists only in a few backwater worlds that don’t have the infrastructure to mine it very well, or the ability to process it very well. What amounts of it can be extracted cost a small fortune to buy and refine into anything beyond a trinket, but the material when refined is energy absorbent and heat immune, making it the perfect anti-lightsaber metal.
    It’s a cool gimmick item for top of the line bounty hunters or warrior nobles to use to cross with a Jedi when they do things the council doesn’t like.

    Disney productions do not have characters, they have representations, to the point when even the one white guy can be seen as a representation.
    So again, how many representations were killed off in this episode by Smilo Ren?

    And then it's even only good looking on the surface. When you take a closer look, then it becomes ridiculous whenever there are more than 2 people fighting. Suddenly they stand still and do nothing or they do complete nonsense. In each fight where Smilo Ren takes on more than 1 opponent at once he would die if not for their stupidity to do nothing or nonsense.

    No hate towards Dafne Keen (Jecki). She's actually pretty talented.

    I want to know how the sith character can see anything through his sith helmet visor, vision would be seriously impaired 😂

    A friend of mine remarked that the writer of the show just might be bad with numbers and thought a millennium was just 100 years. I laughed till I choked up in realization that this might be true.

    A guy that gets defeated by moths shouldn't be calling himself a "Sith" but instead "Pith lord".

    It's ironic that Disney is going after drinker, he seems to be the only one watching Disney's shows and therefore, one of their best fans.

    Cortosis is fine, but its poor storytelling to just have it appear out of nowhere. It should have been set up earlier. Maybe in a scene where an idiot, instead of saying you can't kill Jedi with x y z, is explaining different x y z ways of defeating jedi.

    Oh Cortosis. I remember the KOTOR games have straight up swords made out of them. You get funny scenarios where you fight normal dudes with your lightsabers and then pull out your metal sword against siths.

      It's cause those games run off of a fork of Dungeons & Dragons, D&D having always been very melee-focused, and them needing a way to explain all those melee weapons going toe to toe with lightsabers.
