  • Get Luminar NEO here: bit.ly/Luminar-NEO with discount code ATSKY10 and a 30 day money back guarantee! The latest Luminar update is the best yet, and in this video I'll show you how we can use the new mask features to improve out editing.
    I'll walk you through an edit of the Church Of the Good Sheppard in Tekapo, New Zealand. The masks are used to isolate specific areas in the photo so we can adjust them independently of the rest of the photo. The principals covered will apply to any photo edit you're working on.
    Think how you want to affect an area or object in the image, make a selection for it (a mask) using either the brush, radial or linear masks, the AI Mask or a combination to get the results you want.
    Update 1.06 sees the introduction of other key features such as the histogram and highlight and shadow clipping warnings. Finally Luminar NEO is now looking like the beast it was touted to be. I'm really enjoying using it for my edits. Let me know what you guys think in the comments!

    Great video. Thanks I could not figure out how to change the mask if Neo did not do a good job in an area. I still find that with layers it is completely lacking for what I do. Unless one of these masks can make transparency. On1 has masking and blend modes in raw editing which makes it. I do use Neo and AI as a plugin, which makes it useful to me. Thanks again.

    Excellent video Anthony and a good demo of the latest NEO update. The AI masking is great but its early days and I'm sure more refinement is to come. An interesting test would be a comparison between the NEO AI Masking and the LR AI Masking which is non specific and looks for a subject.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, for sure there are improvements to be made, but I'm in no doubt those will be coming. The portrait mask is the most accurate and I believe that's because it's got time on its side, having been used for a while in bokeh AI. The other genres will improve as the AI learns the forms.
      Good idea for a video Ken. Thanks.

    Great video as per usual, learning so much from them. Didn't think much of Neo till I watched them. One question I have an image I like but the sun was very bright top corner and has really blown it. Tried highlights and whites, but still not right. Any tips that may fix this please .
    Cheers

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks guy. Once you've blown out an image in camera, it's game over unfortunately. One way around the sun issue would be to bracket your shots on site and either use Aurora to blend them, or load the correctly exposed sun as a layer in Neo and then blend it in. Also shooting raw will give you a bit more recovery scope with shadows and highlights but if it's jpeg then blown out is blown out.

    • @AnthonyTurnham

      Absolutely. Simply mask the effect in only to the person/people you want it to affect (brush tool would probably be the best mask method). The adjustment will then only appear on the people you choose

    Awesome video! :) for Luminar Neo, does it come with the sky replacement tool + different sky textures or is that only included in the Luminar Neo + Luminar X package deal?

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mate. Yes it has Sky Replacement AI built in to Luminar NEO and the software ships with some skies too. It's a good kick starter but I can spot a "Luminar Sky" a mile away. If you're serious about dropping in quality skies to your work this sky pack is well worth checking out: bit.ly/2Ruj8KP-Skies Luminar X is worth getting as they continually send out new assets to use, skies, LUTs etc.

    • @dekhog

      @@AnthonyTurnham oh, oh, another photographer without a camera eh? Anthony lol. JQ--
      Go for a walk or step outdoors at home, take some sky photos, add them to the sky collection keeping them in folders that indicate the type of sky eg dark, blue, stormy, bright etc. and also indicate the direction of light. Makes them easier to choose. Oh, BTW -- easy to do sunsets also. Another things you might want to do is to copy and paste nice skies you may have already in images that were there when the image was taken. Paste to a new location. Use the sky composition a bit differently and unless you tell, we all will keep the secret. Always enjoy your tutorials AT. Look forward to more.

    I love the clarity that you bring to photo editing. I am looking at purchasing NEO after watching your tutorial. However, my wife is an abstract artist and the main thing I am interested in is 100 percent accurate color reproduction. I shoot in raw and do everything I can to make it perfect in the shooting but need to process the photo to the goal of 100 percent accurate representation of the original. Would you suggest NEO over AI for that purpose

    • @AnthonyTurnham

    To be honest I did try out masking, and as far as AI can mask something on simple image it's fine, but, and it's a very big but, once you need to make manual adjustments to mask things get annoying as you don't really see mask preview till you start drawing, which makes me want to alt f4 luminar xD Sadly Luminar is just bad for any kind of manual adjustments I mean past dealing with sliders only.
    This is on top of app being slow, way slower than lightrooom for catalogue management for some reason. Working on RAW's past 24 MPx makes it hard to work on since preview of any adjustments is so damn pixelated, you hardly know what you're doing.
    So far I think I will use some set of templates I made just to speed up my photoshop work, as a standalone editing app Luminar is still too green and way too unpolished.
    Well it's kinda sad, but it is what it is

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  ปีที่แล้ว

      Export your photo after you're done editing. Luminar will only save your edit as a set of instructions for creating the finished photo. Exporting will hard bake those changes into a new finished image

      Hi Lloyd, Neo is currently being offered as part of a heavily discounted bundle. Because it's significantly less than normal my discount code is temporarily deactivated by Skylum. If you're keen on getting it, this is the best price I've seen it for a long time! It'll revert to normal RRP in a couple of days when the discount should work again, but it'll still be more than the current offer they're running.

      @@AnthonyTurnham Thanks Anthony, your videos are awesome. My only hesitation with Luminar Neo is that I finally got comfortable with Affinity Photo - using masks, color gradients, etc. I used Aurora HDR and loved the software but it doesn't support CR3 files so I don't use it as much. Can't really do much with Panos either. Maybe I'll get this bundle. Does Luminar Neo has a selection button to fine tune selection edges? Looks like the only option is a brush with soft edges. Any way - thanks again for all your tips and videos!

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@lloydstuartm.d.5625 Hi Lloyd. So there's no feathering of masks like in Photoshop for example (and maybe Affinity too) which is a shame. The emphasis is on simplicity with powerful results, so some of the more finessed masking features and tools I'm used to in PS aren't in Neo. But for me that's part of the draw in that I keep things simple and edits are quicker.

    • @AnthonyTurnham
      @AnthonyTurnham  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Edmond. Cloning yes for sure, however, dodge and burn isn't really relevant anymore as you get better results making an adjustment through the develop tool and painting that in as a dodge or burn effect.
