- The closest settlement to the equator in Japan / Walk around the islamd village East China Sea Hateruma Island (Okinawa Prefecture)
Located 63km southwest of Ishigaki Island, this is the southernmost inhabited island in Japan. It is oval-shaped and surrounded by coral reefs, with the highest point being 60m near the lighthouse, almost in the center of the island. There is a legend that 40 people who were suffering from the poll tax on the island once traveled overnight to Minamihateruma Island, a mysterious island beyond the reach of tax officials. In the 17th century, the Ryukyu Kingdom's policy led to the relocation of several hundred people to Iriomote Island and Ishigaki Island. Before the war, the island was bustling with phosphate mining. Currently, the island's main industry is sugarcane cultivation, which is manufactured at the island's sugar refinery. Historical sites include Nagata Utaki and the birthplace of Akahachi, and other highlights include the spectacular view of Takanazaki, the southernmost point of Japan monument, the stargazing tower, and Nishihama Beach.
The settlement was formed in the central area of the oval-shaped island, surrounded by fields, making it a typical settlement location on an uplifted coral reef island. However, unlike Taketomi Island, where the whole area is not simply a regular block, it changes according to the micro-topography, and the stone walls and houses seem to be in a better state of preservation the further east you go. いつも楽しく拝見させていただいています。マンボウさんのお陰で日本にはどのような島々があるのか、知ることができています。それにしても、日本最南端の島でもしっかりした家並みになっていることに驚いてます。豊かな島の生活を感じさせられました。

うまく説明できないのですが、南の海の珊瑚礁の島は、あんまり「ワクワク」しないんですよね。。。いや、観光地としては素晴らしいところだと思うのです。私がフォローしている「撮って笑って旅をして」という方々も、波照間島が好きで、ここでわざわざプロポーズをしていたので、素敵な島だと思うのですが、「集落街並みWalker」によく出てくる、ぐちゃっとした漁村の方が好きです。
多分、こうした観光地には家族も一緒に来てくれそうだけど、ぐちゃっとした漁村は一人で行くしかないので、「なかなかいけない！！」という思いがあるからかもしれません。笑
