  • This is a small mini vase with a brick pattern. It is made of Padauk, Wenge and black dyed veneer.
    I finished it with tongue oil which gave it a really nice finish.
    I glued the rings in a random pattern which I thinks look good with the brick look.
    The segments were very small and the veneer is very thin.

      Thank you David. You know my mind wants to line everything up. It was a battle to just let them land where they may. There is something about the randomness that really makes in unique.
      For sure all my segment work has been very symmetrical about the placements.

    You may have addressed this question previously. Do you have a machinist, drafting or engineering background? Your jigs are very creative and your designs complex.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. I worked as a wood pattern maker and had to design all the patterns so that they could be molded in sand.
      I did make a number of jigs for special cuts. And the wood patterns were much more complex than the wood turnings I do. But some of the patterns were also simple.

    Sir,
    Why do I see so many creator’s using a two fence system for cutting the wedge’s?
    I’m using a single fence and flipping the stock each pass, is this wrong?

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I do not think hat you are doing is wrong if it works for you.
      Using the two fence method has a number of advantages.
      One is the wedgie sled sets the perfect angle and does not matter whole thing is off to the blade the angle and is still perfect.
      You can also make it off to the blade for interesting effect which I have done. Still getting perfect joints.
      Then if for some reason your strips are not perfectly parallel by using the same side of the board against the fence you will get perfect joints.
      Flipping a board that is not parallel even a little can cause bad joints.
      So those are my reasons but for sure they can be done the way and I wild not say it is the wrong way. Plenty of ways to do it and I pick what I think is the best for me.
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

      I used a Tongue oil made by Formby but there are other brands as well. It is not pure tongue oil and I think that is why it drys and sands so well.

      BJ , Just checked out your video , tremendous work . Chris your comment on getting to thin reminded me a couple years ago I took a segmented bowl course at a RV park in Texas and the instructor asked me if I was getting to thin and I stopped the lathe and checked it was so thin you could see light through it but it never flew apart . Cheers safe turning

      I started the bottle stopper made from cherry several segmented rings that had 10 segments.The segments had to be a tad over 1/4" tall in order to get a good luck on such a small piece.I sanded some Wenge strips down to 0.0625" on my drum sander and when I tried to cut the pieces of Wenge to go between each segment I gave up! LOL
      I never even thought of making the segments much thicker and slicing them on the band saw until I just watched this video again!
      My brain isn't as sharp as it used to be but I'm going to give the bottle stopper vase another go!
      I also noticed that you got a very smooth finish on the Wenge.I have a good bit of it and the grain has fairly deep "pores" in it (like Red Oak)so I always get a "rough" finish.Any ideas how I can improve the grain/finish problem?
      Thanks for helping me over and over again!
      Tom

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@thomaskuzia8125 Hi Tom glad to hear you are having a good time with all of this. If and when I make room I want to get a drum sander as well. Right nowt there are a few machines I could part with and not even know it. such as I rarely use my thickness planer or one of my milling machines. But nice to have just in case..lol
      Getting the open grain can be a pain for sure. Many coats of finish and sanded each time will get them filled. You can use a filler but I would rather not because that can look worse than the open grain. But I have sanded those types of wood using the finish for wet sanding and the dust will fill the grain. Let it dry and then sand it all again.
      Try on a scrap to see if you like the results. On Wenge it just might look fine.
      Best of luck,

    Absolutely stunning!!! That finish is so smooth and shiny, I assumed it was lacquered; would have never guessed it was tung oil and finishing paste!👍

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you Dwayne glad you liked it. This tung oil is really a form of poly. It is a lot like wipe on poly. I once finished a oak roll top desk I made with pure tung oil. Actually it was just the roller section of the desk as I recall. Not all that shiny but still looks good after 45 years.
      Take care,

    great job.....what is "tongue oil"? Hi, from Turkey...

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thank you very much. Pure tongue oil is produced from the seed of a Tung tree.
      Most of what we get today is a mix of polyurethane . The pure Tung oil takes much longer to dry.
