As a trombone player, these are so cool to hear! I have a jazz trombone and a orchestral tenor, and I love the sound of the bass sackbutt. Thanks for a great comparison!
Thank you so much! I hope to do more with it in the future. All the slide positions on it are different than Tenor and Alto trombone so it's actually a nightmare to play at the moment!
I would agree. The orchestral tenor seemed to hold its own across all selections, & sounded particularly good playing the high notes in Bolero...but could also be used in jazz. That may also reflect the fact that it's an Edwards. It would be interesting to know what make/model the "Jazz Trombone" is. George, Canada...
@George Schaut that's what I do. I use my orchestral tenor (benge 165f) for all occasions unless I need an extremely bright sound, then I use my jazz tenor (Buffet (don't know the model or age, records of the serial number was destroyed in a fire))
The bass sackbut and the alto suffered a lot (although the sackbut more so), since most of these excerpts aren't really meant for them. The PBone is really just to mess around or teach someone who can't lift a brass peashooter. Between the orchestral tenor (large bore, I presume) and the jazz horn, it depends a bit on the chosen music, as it was pretty close in Bolero, but the orchestral tenor sounded better in general. Overall, I'd rank the orchestral tenor first, with the jazz horn a bit behind. I'd rank the alto after, then the bass sackbut, then finally the PBone.
Arabesque is the only way to test if the trombone has agility, I’m surprised the plastic did well since it doesn’t look like it’s mean to be played fast
Honestly, Bolero on a smaller bore horn is probably closer to what Ravel was hearing in his head. Plastic is great for those outdoor gigs on freezing days...but suck otherwise. Love the Bass Sackbut.....would love to hear some typical Bass Sackbut parts on it, conforming to the horn...likewise for the Alto....which sounds great but isn't typical for those pieces.... The Orchestral horn is the one you seem most comfortable on...and sounds the best as a result.
They all sound good accept the p-bone but orchestral is the best. Granted the p-bone might sound iffy just because of the material. PS great job. My fellow trombonist friends and I are huge fans!
It's hilarious how drastic the sound difference was switching from plastic to small-bore brass. Although I have to say you really sound 'at home' on your large-bore in any style!
You must remember that we are hearing it not from the horn but our speakers, after being digitally cropped. As a trumpet player and music teacher, I could hear clearly the differences, but I also listen through my studio system. Having heard all but the Sackbut live , the differences are vast.
Man, as a Horn player I REALLY wish I could eventually play Arabesque but sadly my band is nowhere near good enough to pull it off. Guess I'll have to wait till college :sadge:
As a sackbut player (albeit tenor rather than bass), the biggest difference in approach is that with the sackbut, with an historically correct, flat rimmed, shallow mouthpiece, and the small bore size, you have to blow a lot less air through it.
I can just hear the orchestral 'bone's bowtie. The alto is like its little brother and the jazz one like its cousin who likes to party. That plastic one, though, man.... sounds like you're playing it from the back of the closet. P.S. Hook 'em Horns!
Plastic was better than I expected, though I'm not sure I would pay 200 $ for it, probably better to find a second hand one for that prize. Question: Is the plastic one harder or easier to play?
I imagine the PBone is great if you just wanna mess around or you're trying to teach a young child (like ES age, not MS). However, for a middle school student, a second hand Yamaha student peashooter is probably best (or whatever student horn you can get for cheap.)
Plastic is good for kids because a) it's lightweight, b) durable, resistant to damage, & c) cheap. I wasn't impressed with the sound of that one though...
Orchestral tenor, then the jazz horn, alto, pbone and sackbut, in that order. You make the phone sound like trombone-like instrument. I've played an orchestral tenor since college (1979 graduate) and have taken to bass trombone the last 4 years. I'm currently played an independent rotor bass. I would have loved to hear a comparison played with a bass. When I'm playing in band and we get a unison passage above the staff, I who their butts with that big sound! I just found your channel, I liked and subscribed. Great chops!
Stuff like this is why I'm thankful I have studio monitors. Never heard a plastic trombone before; but it's better than I would have imagined. Honestly, for a kid that may not stick with it, that's probably the way to go for a beginning student. The orchestral tenor has SOOOO many more rich overtones than any of the rest. To illustrate the differences more clearly, try some lower registers. Then the bass will likely come into it's own.
Perhaps instead of starting your kid out on a $200 plastic trombone, go with an inexpensive $300 used Conn or King student horn instead...or perhaps go with rent to own? The plastic horn has the advantage of being resilient to any dents/damage that a student might throw at it, & it's lightweight. George, Canada...
Just bought a pBone. Good thing I’m tone deaf or otherwise mainly unable to hear the difference between cheap and quality wind instruments. But here it was evident, even for me 🙀
I'm going to say something a bit controversial, but I like the p-bone. Hear me out, it's not the best for ensemble work, but in the right setting in can provide a different, but nice, color to a piece.
The Edwards wins for me. Just seems the most capable and the large bore gives it the most transferable sound. Not that I'm an Edwards fanboy (actually a XO Brass fanboy) but I have always favored that large bore tenor sound since my King 4BF days.
I'm a horn player, so I'm not sure I'd have the proper vocabulary to explain my thoughts. The plastic one doesn't seem to have much character; it's a trombonish sound, but lacking in any kind of resonance or ringing quality. Honestly, I think the bass sackbut has an interesting sound that I'd like to hear more often. The others sound fine; pretty much like what I'm accustomed to hearing in orchestra. An enjoyable display.
It's clear which one is the one you play the most -- the bass sackbut. Kidding, but I'd be interested to hear the difference a proper mouthpiece makes on the plastic instrument in this comparison. Most people say it turns it from a pile of garbage to decently playable.
The plastic trombone actually sounds as if there was a mute on it ... The orchestral trombone is has the brighter and richer sound. I'm surprised by the quality of the alto sound
Fun video, but obviously no fair comparison to be had between any of these 😂 The Sackbut and the Alto are mainly gonna be that expensive because they're rare and sort of hard to find, especially the Sackbut. An alto trombone is not the most unusual thing but I imagine you pay a premium just for the sort of peculiarity of it no matter the quality. And obviously a jazz trombone is going to be less expensive than a concert trombone just because of the simpler construction, not having that rotary valve. The only sort of fair comparison is between the jazz trombone and the plastic one because the basic construction is similar. And yeah, the plastic one does sound pretty horrible 😂 but fair enough for 200$, still good for like dumb open-air folk festivals and the like where you have to schlepp the instrument around the whole day and having this super light thing is really great, and the sound quality doesn't really matter that much.
This is making me question my $100 student trombone bought at pawn America that I’ve been using for 5 years i CAN get another one, but I’d just end up looking for too long…
Love the video, however in a comparison video like this, I think it’s be better to actually listen and hear if there weren’t any of the meme sounds or just ‘whooshes’ effects in the transitions. Just a simple just could do justice. Other than that great video
I wonder, could you theoretically mix and match the slide of one trombone on the rest of another? What would sound better, the orchestral with a plastic slide, or the plastic with an orchestral slide? Or are the slides different sizes?
I had read somewhere that if you used a brass mouthpiece in a plastic horn, that this would make the instrument sound less "plastic." Worth a try...One of the trombonists in my town band has an alto horn where the bell & slide are from two different makers. Don't know about a brass/plastic hybrid though...
EDIT: The last beat of the arabesque sheet music is WRONG. It should be E F E Db C instead of whatever the heck is printed...
I’m doing arabesque in my wind ensemble and I got confused when I saw it too
The plastic sounded out of tune
that's what sounds actually, as a flute player it's similar to what i have
Lol whats printed is the first horn part
What is the weird handle thing on the sackbut
As a trombone player, these are so cool to hear! I have a jazz trombone and a orchestral tenor, and I love the sound of the bass sackbutt. Thanks for a great comparison!
Thank you so much! I hope to do more with it in the future. All the slide positions on it are different than Tenor and Alto trombone so it's actually a nightmare to play at the moment!
Same here, I feel like people are getting scammed on plastic Trombones because companies say that they are as good as a expensive Trombone
@@thomasshipley8052 people should have enough common sense to realize that isn’t true tho.
@@trombonetimo What trombone model do you play and if any replacement parts what are they?
As a jazz and orchestra trombonist, I feel the orchestral tenor had the best sound out of all of them
The way I see it, jazz feels like it’s better, but only in certain categories
I would agree. The orchestral tenor seemed to hold its own across all selections, & sounded particularly good playing the high notes in Bolero...but could also be used in jazz. That may also reflect the fact that it's an Edwards. It would be interesting to know what make/model the "Jazz Trombone" is. George, Canada...

The orchestral tenor trombone has a much brighter sound!
Ya
The tenor is the best overall, but the jazz trombone sounded super nice on the last excerpt
wait a second i know you
@@qyewye ?
There's only 1 that's not tenor
The pbone sounded solid considering its price point. Also that bass sackbut is awesome, well done! Personal fav sound is the jazz horn I think.
The orchestral tenor sounds the cleanest to me. Maybe I'm just biased idk. First btw
Phew... That's my main
The bass sackbut and the alto suffered a lot (although the sackbut more so), since most of these excerpts aren't really meant for them. I have a Martin 'Urbie Green' model tenor that's just as light as a pBone, and it's a heck of a lot easier to play.
I can definitely tell a sound difference. My favorite is the orchestral tenor it just gives a bit more of a richer sound.
Arabesque is the only way to test if the trombone has agility, I’m surprised the plastic did well since it doesn’t look like it’s mean to be played fast
As a non trombone player Timo never ceases to impress
Honestly, Bolero on a smaller bore horn is probably closer to what Ravel was hearing in his head.

The Orchestral horn is the one you seem most comfortable on...and sounds the best as a result.
I'm playing trombone in advanced band rn and I'm in middle school. I think I kinda suck, but ur vids give me hope. Thank you ❤
They all sound good accept the p-bone but orchestral is the best. Granted the p-bone might sound iffy just because of the material. PS great job. My fellow trombonist friends and I are huge fans!

Idk plastic trombones are just better
It's about the tone and how it feels to play
Song #1 winner: Jazz Trombone
Song #2 winner: Alto Trombone
Song #3 winner: Jazz and Orchestral Tenor trombone tie
(My opinion)
Our band is playing arabesque for our next concert and I am beyond excited. It is one heck of a piece.
Us too!!!!!
PEOPLE!!! LET'S BLOW UP THE OLD TROMBONE TIMO CHANEL! I'm subscriber number 19!!!!!!!
Your accent is an enigma. It’s like you were born in both 1940 and 2000
As a trombone with 6 years of experience and am still trash I can confirm this sounds like a trombone
Damn, you're a trombone?
You must remember that we are hearing it not from the horn but our speakers, after being digitally cropped. As a trumpet player and music teacher, I could hear clearly the differences, but I also listen through my studio system. Having heard all but the Sackbut live , the differences are vast.
when you were playing bolero on the alto the notes were just a little sharp and that made it sound a million times better. keep it up!
“Orchestral” sounded best to me. I’m not even always a fan of the modern “dark concert sound” but that was nice sounding horn.
Man, as a Horn player I REALLY wish I could eventually play Arabesque but sadly my band is nowhere near good enough to pull it off.
Guess I'll have to wait till college
:sadge:
Thumbs up on the Orchestral Tenor.Dope beat
Tbh I like jazz trombone best. I also am deeply in love with jazz music tho so it might just be the way it sounds jazzy
As a fellow trombone player, your tonguing is impressive. Nice job!
As a sackbut player (albeit tenor rather than bass), the biggest difference in approach is that with the sackbut, with an historically correct, flat rimmed, shallow mouthpiece, and the small bore size, you have to blow a lot less air through it.

P.S. Hook 'em Horns!
🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
the plastic one is more meant for a beginners or practice instrument, you wouldn’t play it at a concert or anything lol
You know he is good at tbone when he makes the $200 sound good.
As a bass trombonist I never get any appearances sadly
My brother played arabesque and now she’s playing first chair at Allstate
Hazo writes some genuinely cool shit.
I love arabesque. I remember playing that in high school
Alto trombone was my favourite, followed by the orchestral tenor - both have such a great tone!!
The orchestral tenor sounds great on all of them, and has a lovely tone. The alto looked like the mouthpiece was too large for it.
The “jazz trombone” is a Conn 4H and I have one!! My little peashooter held it down 🥹🥹🥹
Idk what type if trombone i have but the jazz and bass sackbutt sounded really cool
This is very cool and made me smile! Well done!
Plastic was better than I expected, though I'm not sure I would pay 200 $ for it, probably better to find a second hand one for that prize.
Question: Is the plastic one harder or easier to play?
The PBone is extremely easy to play, I’ve tried it personally several times. But I don’t really like his sound very much. 😉
I imagine the PBone is great if you just wanna mess around or you're trying to teach a young child (like ES age, not MS). However, for a middle school student, a second hand Yamaha student peashooter is probably best (or whatever student horn you can get for cheap.)
The slide is actually a bit ... rough
Plastic is good for kids because a) it's lightweight, b) durable, resistant to damage, & c) cheap. I wasn't impressed with the sound of that one though...
My friend determined that a lot of the plasticy sound of the PBone can be attributed to the plastic mouthpiece. Maybe try a different one?
That was hilarious! You sound great on the Edwards.
The alto trombone is just more responsive and the tone is beautiful, gotta go with that one bolero and arabesque
Favorite is the Orchestal Tenor, W.
Biggest flex is that i got my tenor bone off of facebook marketplace for £400 and it is in virtually perfect condition
I heard somewhere where the plastic trombone actually sounds good when you use a normal trombone mouthpiece on it rather than the plastic one
TENOR: THE BEST 🙌🏼 IN ALL
As a trombonist, I believe it doesn’t really matter the brand or price of a trombone, it matters the practice and the skill one has
Stuff like this is why I'm thankful I have studio monitors. Never heard a plastic trombone before; but it's better than I would have imagined. You can never go wrong with a good old tenor trombone
i don’t even play trombone (percussion, clarinet, and some others) but damn this is so nice
You should get the the phone mini as an alto trombone and review it
Just bought a pBone. Good thing I’m tone deaf or otherwise mainly unable to hear the difference between cheap and quality wind instruments. But here it was evident, even for me 🙀
Cool video, that's a hell of a difference!
AYO BRO IM PLAYING ARABESQUE RN THAT SECTION IS THE MOST FUN
I'm going to say something a bit controversial, but I like the p-bone.
Hear me out, it's not the best for ensemble work, but in the right setting in can provide a different, but nice, color to a piece.
The plastic one seems to have is use case. I love the orchestral one on most pieces.
I just got done watching a concert at my brother’s high school.
These trombones are cool btw
I play trombone but I’m not good and not in high school
Im a trumpet player. The Edwards by faar in all comparisons. I guess i like the orchestral trombones.
The Edwards wins for me. Just seems the most capable and the large bore gives it the most transferable sound. Not that I'm an Edwards fanboy (actually a XO Brass fanboy) but I have always favored that large bore tenor sound since my King 4BF days.
lol the memes. a man of culture I see.
Oh arabesque I love Samuel Hazo

as a horn player i can confirm these sound like trombones
The Sackbutt is an early Trombone Bach wrote for
very nice this video I play trombone tenor and your sound is wonderful .Can you bring a video where you play double bass trombone
im a intermediate in trombone (i'll make one year of playing in setember) and i learned to play Freaks in 20-30 minutes
The tone of the plastic one really fit Bolero except for the high range lol
The alto trombone was just denied throughout the whole thing
1: malfunction
2: slide comes off
3:the audio file corrupts
Video recommendation right here, I lay the creation bass trombone solo on the bass saxtbutt
As an oboist I could hear a difference though mostly on Bolero (I like bolero go D’Amore)
It's clear which one is the one you play the most -- the bass sackbut.
Kidding, but I'd be interested to hear the difference a proper mouthpiece makes on the plastic instrument in this comparison. Most people say it turns it from a pile of garbage to decently playable.
I love the orchestral tbone, what brand/model is it?
what jazz horn is that, a 6H? You sound phenomenal on it!
As like a practice trombone for school is the plastic one a good one to keep at home
Orchestral and jazz were both the best i can’t decide between the 2 tho
The plastic trombone actually sounds as if there was a mute on it ... The orchestral trombone is has the brighter and richer sound. I'm surprised by the quality of the alto sound
Very funny,...I like it🤣
I think the Plastic Trombone and Alto Trombone sound very different, but the Orchestral Tenor, Jazz, and Bass Sackbutt sound extremely identical.
is the orchestral tenor trombone your trombone you mostly play with because i use a trombone that looks alike ad its omg the best
Bolero on plastic sounded almost saxophonic!
Yo the arabesque part is in mirage and I played it my first year of high school and was the only one who could do that
Fun video, but obviously no fair comparison to be had between any of these 😂 The Sackbut and the Alto are mainly gonna be that expensive because they're rare and sort of hard to find, especially the Sackbut. If only hazo knew of the ol’ SACK
Orchestral tenor trombone all the way
As a baritone player, I'm not sure why I am watching this.
as a tromboner myself, the jazz trombone was beautiful, just amazing but the plastic one and the alto both were not that well
how do u hit a b-flat on trombone my teacher won't help and i don't understand
What kind of Conn is your jazz horn? I’m curious about the model.
It sounds like the plastic trombone has no resonance or that it's leaking like crazy
I got my first trombone for 35 dollars out of a random guys trunk behind a McDonald’s 🙂
i like alto and tenor trombones
The jazz trombone, how do you get that vibrato like sound to come out o those half notes and quarter notes
where tf did you get a bass sackbut while I'm over here unable to find even one double-thayer bass bone on the entire freakin' east coast
i love arabseque
