    Money Pit has been giving me the confidence to start doing some of the basic maintenance work on my car on my own. I have a mechanic friend who’s been making sure I don’t destroy the car, but this show has taught me so much about how to work on my car.

    i believe the primary advantage of that particular 3 puck is that it won't over heat nearly as easily, because it slips less and has materials that are better suited to functioning in high heat scenarios. a larger stock clutch will develop heat soak in a continuous use situation like the track, and once its fully heat soaked it can't hold as much power and becomes unusable until it cools back down. however the 3 puck design will maintain its performance and function better in a max temp scenario, and at the same time will reach operating temps more quickly due to less surface area, which increases the overall consistency of feel whether your 1 lap in, or 20 laps in, it should feel about the same and maintain performance if you are under the hp rating specs. so reliability and consistency are the key words, versus comfort/ease of use/max hp performance ratings. i could be wrong about some aspects of that for this particular model, but that is usually the case for most clutches like this. it is counter intuitive because you would think the stock clutch would dissipate heat better and hold more power with more surface area, but a lot of it just comes down to the lower friction material not being able to perform in high temps and maintain consistency. but also a higher puck design with more surface area of the same material would hold way more horsepower, but be much much more difficult to drive due to being underpowered, and also adds rotating mass. which then you get into multi disc clutch designs that have the advantages of smooth engagement and high horsepower ratings at the minor cost of rotating mass--- but while this little 3 puck might not hold as much power as a twin disc and also be less comfortable to ride around with, it is considerably lighter and can hang laps and not overheat, so this is really the highest performance option you could possibly get out of a clutch for track use at your power level.

      @@DirtbagCarpentry I couldn't get mine back up there. I struggled just the same as Zach was doing, and eventually had to use a floor jack. Albeit I was using a tiny little floor jack and had the whole gearbox balanced perilously while a strap was under the tail end, and then I was able to lift it up and get it seated on the block and pilot bearing. I also had to wedge a block of wood in front of the crank pulley to get the engine to tilt back far enough, because without the weight of the gearbox it tilts forward which makes it really hard to get the gearbox input shaft at the correct angle to go into the pilot bearing.

    I've been a mechanic for over 10 years... I literally never thought of doing that with the bolts. In my own defense I haven't had an issue remembering where they go since I was a teenager, but still, that is a remarkably good idea.
    I personally do that both ways. If you need to replace rear main seal, and it is a manual, replace the clutch. Same if you're doing the clutch, do the seal. Save yourself time and money both ways. To the point where I have bought the seal myself for customer cars when they refused it.

      I do interior stuff on cars for a living and to be fair to you I don’t do the cardboard trick at work either.
      But I 100% use it when doing personal stuff like rebuilding my suspension, because unlike work the project can drag on.
      And B, I 1000% agree with you on the main seal. I’m putting an LSD + clutch in my 2000 TDI soon and paid a bit extra for an OEM seal.
      Most shops and sources have advised against replacing a non leaking seal, but I imagine that’s because the oem seal is better than a 20$ generic seal.

      IDK if you're still monitoring this ancient comment but, as a mechanic too, thank God for dedicated mechanics like you! I worked in a government fleet for 30 years and been turning wrenches way longer than that... and the sheer stupidity, incompetence, and vicious indifference I've seen after I checked the work of various "mechanics" who worked on my car, is truly disgusting to me.
      I have seen clutch disk bolts LEFT LOOSE by the morons that changed it and rattling around in the bell house because half of them had fallen out. Another time, some other dolt I (foolishly) paid to adjust the valves, simply tightened them all the way down leaving NO valve clearance because the idiot didn't understand what he was doing, why, or how. And my personal favorite happened to my old 1985 Nissan 200SX. One time I needed the alternator changed out, which they did, but on the drive home the dash light was coming on anyway. Test the alt, yep, 14 volts - sometimes - so it wasn't charging the battery enough. This happened all because the belt was too loose and couldn't be tightened enough because it ran out of travel before it ran out of belt... and the cause of THAT was because the total sh!t-head "mechanic" that replaced the alternator couldn't be bothered to swap the (larger) OEM pulley from the old one!
      Point being, mechanics like you are maybe one in 10, or maybe even 1 in 100, so dude, you have my sincere thanks that SOME one is concerned with doing things right!

    Weird story time: I have had a new in box “performance” clutch for a late 90’s (I think) Dodge Neon for YEARS. My former college roommate’s ex-boyfriend randomly left it in her room one day. After a while, she just let me have it since she didn’t know what it was, or why he left it there in the first place. The weird part is: he didn’t drive a Dodge Neon. My guess is that he ordered the wrong clutch (probably from eBay) and just didn’t want to deal with trying to return or exchange it. If anyone reads this and has any use for it, let me know and I’ll give you more details on the part! I’ll probably let you have it for free fifty, or for the cost of shipping!

    One thing y’all didn’t touch on. When installing a new clutch, there is recommended break in miles. Meaning daily driving and not thrashing on it until those miles are complete. I know some people don’t bother, but the concept is still there.

    Exedy rates their torque numbers at the wheels so it easier to determine which clutch you probably need instead of guessing what crank torque is from a wheel torque rating.

      I did one once on an Alfa Spider, in an apartment parking lot, in the middle of winter with snow falling. Every single part was a solid block of freezing metal sucking as much heat out of my hands as possible. And yet, I kinda miss those days.

      I have a road registered car with a clutch like that in it and it’s cable operated. Can confirm it’s absolutely shit in any type of traffic. As soon as that plate gets hot it becomes very very grabby.

      I mean why wouldn't you take the car out of gear while sitting? If you don't do that you're killing your throwout bearing, your thrust bearings, your slave cylinder, your diaphragm spring, your leg. Why anyone would sit at a light or in traffic holding the clutch disengaged is beyond me.

    this vid hit home on so many levels of my years messing around with cars in my 20's. The long days that turn into long nights working on the same damn thing because you just don't know how you are supposed to get the thing into the other thing by yourself. And when you do have it in place, you can't put the bolts in because you are using all your limbs to hold the thing in place. lol. true Love/Hate relationship that was. From then on, I vowed that I shall get a home with a big ass garage so I can install a lift and never have to crawl under my cars again! Honorable mentions: busted knuckles from slipping wrenches, broken bolts that ruined a whole day really fast, lost tools, and dropping bolts that you swear hit the ground but can never find.

      Those alignment plugs suck. If you wrap an extension with tape to friction fit (lightly) into the friction disk and pilot bushing the trans will line up easier.

    I had to do a Miata clutch in a parking lot at an Autocross event one time… can confirm that the transmission on your chest bench press using you knee for support is the proper method.

    I'm 60 seconds through this window and I'm pretty sure that clutch is for certain Miata racing where the engine and transmission are supposed to be bone stock, with the idea being that the 1lb of less rotating mass from the puck design and aggressive bite means faster engagement / less slippage on shifts (combined with the reduced rotating mass). You're talking about a clutch designed to save maybe a quarter to a third of a second of average lap time maximum. I know a guy that races stock Miatas and this looks precisely like the kind of thing he'd be using.

    Thanks It was like re-living my younger days as an Auto mechanic. Also worked at AAmco for years and installed untold amount of clutches. Everything was still familiar to me. Looks like parts have changed very little in last 50 years. Clutch parts anyway. That was a great presentation of covering about everything with that job you did. Very Professional.

    I remember that time that my father installed Ford Galaxy 1995ish performance clutch in our 1985 Ford Escort station wagon because Escort cluch burn dawn, and he couldn't buy any other cluch because there where no other cluch.
    Galaxy cluch was 5cm (2 inch) bigger than Escort, so my father takes angel grinder and cut that 5cm of the cluch and put it in car. It worked for 5 years.

    This reminds me so much of that time I changed the transmission on my R32. I had lifted the car over a depression in the ground to give myself more room to maneuver the tranny. Removal went super well, and then right before I got to reinstall the new transmission, it started raining. That depression in the ground filled with water. I used a motorcycle jack to lower the transmission, and of course it was too high for the install, so once the weather got a bit better, I had no choice but to lay in that nice big puddle and lift with my belly. Fun times. Still, the moment that shaft got in felt like I had landed on the moon.

    Watching this process makes me appreciate the Triumph Spitfire even more. I used to own a 1974 Spitfire 1500 and one day when I went to go home from work I noticed a puddle of fluid under the car. It was fluid from the hydraulic clutch (the clutch pedal was on the floor). After power shifting all the way home I set about replacing the slave cylinder which was the source of the leak, requiring removing the transmission (put a new clutch in just for fun). In the Spitfire the transmission is removed from the top, you literally get to sit in the driver and passenger seat while doing all of the work. It isn't even possible to take the transmission out the bottom because the classic hard frame that the Spitfire has is in the way.

      You bring back good memories. When I was a kid my father had a '62 Triumph Spitfire Mk1 that he drove almost 200 miles round trip every day for work which was a lot more driving than it was really designed for. A couple times per year he'd come home from work on Friday and we'd start stripping for an engine rebuild and have it up and tested after dark on Sunday night. We used a Massey Ferguson TO35 with boom to lift the engine. I used to think I loved working on cars but after he died I realized it wasn't working on cars that I'd liked so much, it was working on cars with him.

      @@andrulV2 I absolutely loved taking the transmission out through the passenger compartment to replace the clutch. My 74 had the factory hardtop, six bolts, ten minutes, and it was half an inch lower than the rag. How often did you lift the inside rear wheel off the ground in tight turns? I also loved being able to do a U-turn inside the lines of two standard 12 foot wide lanes. I found out that the little plastic spoiler on the front actually worked. Near top speed, at around 90MPH, the front would crank down and bring the cat close to its braking stance, with all four tires square to the road.

      @@andrulV2 Probably a good thing because if you did not know that the car would do that, it could quickly lead to rolling it. The car would exhibit typical understeer in hard cornering until the inside rear wheel lifted and then jump to hard oversteer so you had to be ready to change your steering angle to keep it steady. It was a little dangerous, but a real blast.

    My Grandma had a Pontiac sedan in 1972 (I was just learning to drive stick shift) that she had them put a tractor clutch in. The engagement was about a half-inch - it was literally an on/off switch and the disk pushed back so hard I couldn't tell when it was starting to engage. My Mom had a Subaru in 73 that was also a stick, and when I tried to shift - it was like a miracle, I could tell instantly when it was starting to engage. Your fears for drivability were like a flashback for me :)

    I have used this clutch a couple times. Its amazing compared to the unsprung 6 pucks that everyone was using back in the day. For a b series Honda that you daily drive I think you can't beat it. b18c5 with toda cams I could run 10-15 passes at LACR a night and it would hold no problem.

    Had a 3 pluck kevlar clutch installed in my MX5 by a clutch specialist. He said it could handle 300hp. No extra pressue pushing in the clutch pedal.

    On Monday I drove my brothers 2014 Chevy spark with a 5 speed manual. I only drove it a little bit but I only stalled it once and it was my first time driving a manual. And I love manuals it is so much fun!!!!

    I was a vehicle mechanic for over thirty years , working for main agents and independent workshops . Just yesterday I was under my daughters car to change a starter motor lying on my yard , ouch what a struggle I do not miss that kind of job . You advised to grease the gearbox spline and release bearing , I would never do this but ensure they were cleaned and dry ,as clutch dust would gather in the grease and possibly cause binding over time resulting in stiff pedal action and possibly clutch slip . Another tip would be to check a new clutch disc on the gearbox spline before assembly to ensure when you are lifting the transmission it will enter the spline nicely .

    I installed a high performance clutch that looked like a plus sign and it was responsive but it actually lasted compared to a normal clutch. Took a while to get used to but was better than replacing the clutch and pressure plate even 20-30k

    Having been an intern at a mechanic shop I've learned one major lesson, if your going to clean any part spray it down it brake cleaner, that shit works great for almost everything

    Tip for removing rear main seal: Drive a small self-tapping or drywall screw into the seal, then you can pry or pull on that screw to get the seal out with minimal risk to the sealing surfaces, and minimal time and effort.
    Tip #1 for aligning splines: Turning the crank is usually simpler than turning the transmission in situations like this.
    Tip #2 for aligning splines: On many vehicles you can simply rotate the entire transmission until the splines line up, then rotate it back once the splines are engaged to line the bellhousing up with the block.

    One of the beauties of a motorbike, swapping the clutch for most involves - (drain oil, or if in a rush just lean the bike over)remove crank case cover,remove clutch basket,replace friction pads+spacers,put basket and cover back on. First time I ever did one it was 2 hours and that was just through being cautious.

      I'm in the same boat every time I have to go under one of my cars. It's kind of a drag knowing I got to work on my car when I used to really enjoy it. Can't wait to move told the family next move we are getting a place with at least a concrete pad so I can enjoy working on my cars

      I just use 3/4 inch plywood in my gravel driveway. Holds up by 3800# blazer on jack stands no problem. Also is nice so you can move jacks and engine hoists around

      yeah it's only a couple times more annoying than the Honda morse-code letter H key-in beeper. I wired in a bypass switch on my Integra door open switch so I could have the stereo on with doors open while detailing or cleaning or whatever.

    Great demonstration of what it's actually like trying to install/reinstall a clutch and gearbox in the comfort of your own home (or driveway in this case).
    Getting that gearbox installed again without a jack was very reminiscent of when I had to change my clutch on my 200SX; such a pain getting everything lined up with the weight of the thing and you end up having to bench press it multiple times, along with a lot of swearing.

    Uhm. Did this job on a 240 several times. You could put cinder blocks under the jack stand. I did it on gravel. But, do that in the future, if your incline isn't too bad. Then, trans jack rocks. And in this case, always pull the shifter at the start.

    Ones I made this work on a Ford Escord without having a centering tool for the clutch. So I had to use the spindle of the gearbox and tighten the screws each by each through the clutch lever window. After each screw I had to rotate the fan a little bit until I found the right position of the next screw . This procedure was very time consuming because I did it all alone without anyone telling me to stop rotating the fan on the right position. But finally it worked.

    Quite a few years back, I needed a new clutch in my 83 Nissan Sentra wagon. I think a quote to get it done was under $200. I decided to do it myself. It went well. Front wheel drive; rip one wheel off and get that half-shaft out of the way. Trans out, pressure plate off, old clutch isn't any good as a Frisbee either. The new clutch was (if I remember correctly) less than $50ish. Started putting it all back. As I was going around the pressure plate with that one final click, the wrench slipped and I sliced the back of one finger along the edge of the engine.
    So, after a trip to urgent care for stitches, and a case of beer for my neighbor who helped me put it all back together, I saved about $2.00 on the job. Success!
