I studied with him to learn his method of teaching and learning for three years. And, yes, he was as amazing as any master teacher I have ever met. I spent ten years studying with Michel Thomas ( see my video on youtube about this experience). Both incredible teachers.

I read the book a couple of years ago. Nothing new under the sun as most of his tips are already in any Cambridge student's books (related to the speaking part). In any case, Boris Shekhtma has the great added value of composing all these tips and presenting them in a very appealing way. For example, the advantage of a memorized text (called Island) is that it provides a grammatical pattern or a template that can be used in different contexts. Let's say that you memorize this chunk: "I'm likely to.....", you can use it in many contexts and languages: English "I am likely to be late, I am likely to go to University, etc." in Italian "È probabile che io (+ congiuntivo) sia in ritardo, esca stasera" ecc. Last but not least, I appreciate this new (and interactive) book review. Love it.

I think the book is worthwhile as it gives examples on how to do it, I found it really helpful. He also pioneer many of these techniques years ago, so I guess folks then copied and expounded on it, still helpful.

Thanks Luka, I think this is exactly what I need at the point of language learning that I am currently at. I have been learning Spanish and Russian for a little over a year and I understand quite a bit but when trying to respond I either respond in very simple words or just stand there like a deer in the headlights trying to come up with appropriate output to produce. I think the tools 🛠 in this book might help me get over this hump. I ordered the book. Thanks for the recommendation.

Hello, Luca. I bought this book and read it after watching this video. All the methods on this booklet are pragmatic and straightforward to readers, I wouldn't say it's useless, it could be a quite good guidance for those who has yet known how to study a subject or simply for ADHDers, but for those who have already mastered 1 or 2 foreign languages it may not be a good choice, it will be too basic for them. But still I appreciated this book and I like how artless the author is, I would like to read more of this author if he ever wrote any profound theory around language studies.

Luca Lampariello comes up with the good stuff for us again.
This is an excellent book, full of useful ideas.
One amusing thing is that the author warns about using bad English grammar, but some of the English grammar examples he says are wrong, are actually perfectly fine.
For example, he says on page 63. 'She is in hospital' is wrong and 'She is in the hospital' is correct.
But 99% of the time we would say 'She's in hospital.' and leave out the article.

Thanks Luca for this suggestion, I feel it's properly what I need at my point of learning english. The difference that you linked between language skylls and comunication skylls has been a really important clarification for me. I'm often too concerned to the grammar and it makes me feel stressed about speaking, despite to try to use the tools I just have in a more effective way. I'll buy the book right now!

There is a new edition (5th one) from 2021 where the book is substantially cheaper than the usual price one would have to pay for it.
For years I saw this book costing £130, £80, etc. You can still see those prices for the old editions in many websites. Really expensive for a 118 pages book. I know it is a book from the most famous FSI teacher but still the price sounded really prohibitive for most of us.
Luckily, nowadays one can buy it for £11.00-£12.50 if you buy its last edition.
This new edition has the same content than the one Luca shows in his video but the letters in the cover (excepting the "Immediately") are purple.
    Hope it helps.

The only problem I have is that I would like to learn Italian, which I love, and French, but I've heard that it's better to start with Spanish, which I like the least of the three. And then move to the other romance languages, is it worth to learn that way? Any advice?

Luca, eres impresionante.

      Escuchar, hablar, leer y escribir..
Lo más importante es enfocarte cada día y nunca permitas un día sin estudiar.
Yo aprovecho cada segundo que pueda. Cuando estoy en camino a mi trabajo leo y escucho español, uso duolingo y otras aplicaciones también.
      Escuchar es lo mas importante..

It´s easy to use what I like when I know at least basics of the language. I can read the books, I can watch tv… But how do polyglots learn from scratch? What do you use for study when you know nothing at all? I want to learn Croatian now and I am pretty lost. I do not know what to do and I have also problems with materials because there is almost nothing for that language. Mobile applications I saw were pretty useless. I learned English and Italian at language school before and it was quite easy. But... there are no courses for croatian here so I have to rely on myself. Do you have any tip for the learning language basics please?

Hi Luca, A pronunciation note for you. You seem to have concentrated your English language efforts in the US English/Standard American English dialect. That happens to be my mother tongue. In that dialect the word "clothes" is pronounced as "close", just as if the "th" were not in the word at all. Here's a link to a youtube video demonstrating the pronunciation of "clothes".

Thank you! I’ve just jumped a bunch of steps to fluency, I think, even if a little farther from accuracy!

Hi in Australian English we pronounce it as clothes (clozes) True there is a difference in English pronunciation, USA, UK and Australian and to throw more into the mix listen to Kiwis / New Zealanders !!!! Good video Luca 👍

"Clothes" pronounced as "close" actually isn't universal in the United States.

@@paulbuckley1715 Hi Paul, I didn't say it was pronounced that way everywhere in the US. I said it was pronounced that way in the Standard American English dialect.
