** What's with the necklaces?

Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.

Interesting side note. Buchanan's 12 is pretty popular in the Mexican community due to it being popularized by cartel gangsters (don't ask me why or how they landed this brand let alone scotch). It's considered posh so a lot people drink it out of fashion and the marketing department at Buchanan's totally picked up on that. However, they usually add canned pineapple juice and turn it into a god awful mixer. I think its ok, wouldn't go out of my way to buy it. For my money in a similar price range I'd go for JWB or Monkey Shoulder.
InjuryBound also a lot of Marisco restaurants and paisa nightclubs offer bottle service at $100-$300 for "Bukanas" 12 lol how most waitress pronounce it.

The 750ml bottle is only 28 at Total wine. You found the 1L price of 45 bucks. And personally at 28, I've seen it on sale at 25 at Total wine on occasions, this is definitely a bottle to keep open in your bar.

The Buchanan's 18 is always one of my "house whiskies." Probably the best balance of quality to price I've ever seen in a blend, and honestly I prefer it to most Single-Malts.
I need to try that. However, I work and get most of mine for free but I have acquired a taste for Scotch so now I'm spending a little more than I like to.
My brother is in love with 18. I definitely need to mooch some. Also is it just me but from the front Rex looks like a 90’s teenage girl with a beard. Bangs and poodle puff included. Props man for pulling it off

An OLD Black Bottle!!! That's AWESOME! Its high on my "always check the dusty back shelves of every liquor store for this" list. That's a find for sure.
I just got this yesterday at Total Wine in Daytona and it came with a nice Shaker with a leather tag around it. I have not tried it yet because I'm still drinking my single malt.

Every time you guys talk about the distillery a tiny Jeff Goldblum in my head says "You were so concerned by if you could that you didn't stop to think if you should." But in a good way.
I just got a chance to try this and I got BBQ flavored sunflower seeds. Great Scotch!

This is my favorite budget scotch bar none. I've picked it up as cheap as $28, got a bottle last week for $33 you can't beat that for the price

Bhuchanan's is extremely popular among the Mexican comunity, specially the one in the US. Half of Mexico loves it, half of Mexico hates Buchanan's bottles.
The reason for its popularity is due to the free marketing it gets from folk cartel related music. So much so that there's even a narco-ballad band among many, called "BuKnas de Culiacan" known for their ridiculous performings and lyrics. Like if gangsta rap had a drink of their choice. Hence loved and hated.

Can you talk a little about how a whiskey can go into a barrel at near 80% volume, then lose some of the alcohol volume over time and then how it gets to 40% in the bottle. Do they just mix it with water?
Yes! That's called "bottle proofing". When it comes out of the barrel at 60%+ (bourbon), they add water to it to bring it down to whatever proof they want for the flavor profile.
I know you’ve said that once it’s less than half full it starts to change very fast. Just curious about how long you usually let it sit before you HAVE to drink it. I know I remember seeing the almost empty bottle of macallan m in the back for a long while and was wondering if there was ever a point in a whiskey where it needed to be drunk
I believe that whisky is Good from six months to a year depending on the whiskey. The bad thing is mine never makes it past a week or two if even.

Finally! Total Wine Glendale beats Austin in price! Buchanan 12 is $25 here. Of course I'd much rather have some of that $35 Ardbeg 10 that Daniel mentioned a week or 2 ago. It's $60 here

True confessions: Still a novice with Scotch, so I don't know if I should feel embarrassed...
Was recently given a gift of a mini of the BDeluxe12. And said waaiiit a minute and pulled out my other Christmas gift bottle of JW Blue Label. Should I feel dumb here?!? While I can certainly note subtle differences such as the Buchanan's feels a bit soft on the palate ... a bit less complex on the nose, but Dang if I can tell if the Johnnie Walker high end blend is 6 times better that the Buchanan's ... sheesh, a Very nice smoky experience

Hello gents. First time, long time.
My wedding is coming up in July and I'm looking to purchase a nice whisky for myself and to share with my groomsmen (to go with some flasks I purchased them). I'm giving and thoughtful, unlike Rex.
The groomsmen are various levels of whisky drinkers. So I'm looking for something that is good quality but accessible to those with different pallets. Price range is abour $200.
I was thinking of Johnny Walker Blue, but is that too boring?
Any thoughts or recommendations would be much appreciated. Thanks!

Highland Park 18, Old Pulteney 17 (if you can find it), Glendronach Parliament 21, literally anything but JW Blue.
I'm going to agree with Jimmy and say that the Glendronach Parliament 21 is probably the most generally approachable in his list. It's a really lovely scotch.

Where do you come up with these oranges and pineapples and sweet caramel apple. I only come up with medicine or rubbing alcohol is my nose something is wrong with my nose I think.
Different palette. Also, are you actually holding it in your mouth for like 3 or 4 seconds and Swinging it around to get the tastes.

I know everyone loves JW Black….but I feel Buchanan’s 12 has more character. Actually a nicer smoke and sweet than JW Black. The nose just blows Black Label out of the water. I like JW Black, but I love Buchanan’s 12.

I notice you guys do reviews on Compass Box a lot and you really love those. (So do i) Pretty much every time you do a Compass Box review you mention Douglas Laing but, i dont think reviewed any yet. Any plans on doing those soon? IF YOU DO, Could you please include some information on their Campbeltown bottle called the Gauldrons?
