    Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:

    ** What's with the necklaces?
    Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
    See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
    Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
    Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
    ** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
    Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
    Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
    It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
    ** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
    Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
    The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
    ** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
    There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
    Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
    There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
    Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

    Hey guys, love the content and have been a long time sub! I would classify myself more on the "new" side of whiskey though have tried many since I begun following. I honestly was holding back from trying Laphroaig 10 as when you have described island scotches in the past you stated "not for the faint hearted"
    Anyways, I bit the bullet this weekend past and man oh man did I LOVE it! Each new whiskey I have purchased I drink along to your past reviews but can't seem to find a Laphroaig 10 as the main review.
    I get cinnamon on the nose....is that right??? I mean Christmas candy cane cinnamon! Do you get this?
    Keep up the great work and never stop the shenanigans!

    Hey Daniel, what's the significance of beading in a whisky? I recently came across a bottle of Laphroaig Madeira and noticed that it throws out more beads than a pervert at Mardi Gras, and the beads linger long enough (30-40 secs) to make the whisky look frothy after a good shake. I've heard contradictory things about this with a source saying that it's a sign of the whisky being fake while others claim that it's normal for high proof whiskies.

    I wish I could live in TX just for your whiskey prices!!! I live in MD, and all of the whisky that was recommended is easily over $45 most places. Ardbeg 10 tends to be closer to $60 in most places. If you want a budget Islay, try Smokey Joe. It's a blend of Islay single malts, and very good.

    Hey does peat prefer aerobic or anaerobic conditions? Also does it like acidic or basic conditions? I’m pretty sure it prefers wet conditions I’m just not sure about the other parts.

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peat isn’t a plant, but it is made up of plant debris. Peat is formed by long term plant debris build up water rich areas such as in bogs, fens, etc. Peat only truly forms in predominantly wet conditions where it accumulates over time and isn’t disturbed. Bogs are permanently wet and build up peat faster than fens. Fens are seasonally semi-wet/dry so conditions aren’t optimal for peat formation and preservation. Peat creates a naturally low oxygen acidic environment and the organic matter or peat naturally chelates or chemically binds many toxins and heavy metals such as uranium and thorium. Bogs and associated wetlands serve as important natural water filtration systems and that’s one reason they are protected. Human and animal carcasses long buried in peat bogs in Europe have been found in near perfect condition because of . the low oxygen and acid conditions. The carcasses were effectively “tanned” and mummified while buried in the peat. Peat and peat derived soils are called histosol by soil scientists and are the subject of a great deal of ecological and geochemical research.

    When I went to the distillery tour in August, the Westland folks mentioned sourcing their own peat from an old military base, all the other peat in Washington is "protected wetlands". They said they wouldn't have Washington peated product to release for a few years.

    Question: i have heard that the north side of a bourbon rick house is often where the good stuff is found. Is there any truth to this or is it just shenanigans? ( i ask because my local store picked their private select 4 roses from warehouse E on the north side)

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hill Billy It’s generally cooler on the north facing sides of buildings without climate control in the northern hemisphere. So yes, there is a temperature difference that probably influences the barrels and aging process.
      The reason the north side is cooler has to do with Earth-Sun geometry and is simple in principle but kind of complex to actually explain. I used to help teach a science class in college that was filled with business and music majors fulfilling their non-major/elective degree requirements. When it came to explaining Earth-Sun geometry and the equinoxes you could see their brains shutting down. It was incredible. 🤯

      Parts of North America recently received additional bottles of Glenfiddich Winter Storm. In Calgary, AB, this is a $300 bottle, not sure about pricing elsewhere. It is very nice...easy to sip with a good balance of sweetness.
      At 21 years, though, the barrel notes do start to come through rather strong at times. The first time I tried it, I got the sensation of a mildly peated whisky (and had someone else comment with a similar sensation). The second time I tried, I let the glass breath for a while, and I think it made a difference...the ice wine notes came through far more readily.
      This is not uncommon in older whisky (in my experience). If you think about it, peat is vegetation and so is oak. It isn't a real shock to find similarities...especially in whisky that's been sitting in a barrel for a couple of decades :-D

  • @dant1349

    Question on climate’s effect on aging: assuming all aging is happening indoors, why don’t distilleries simply control the temperature and humidity of their warehouses to age things slower? I’m assuming there’s some reason that isn’t possible but I don’t see why.

    • @the-chillian
      @the-chillian 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Consider that in the traditional whisk[e]y-producing regions, this has been going on for hundreds of years. Up until the early 1900s it simply wasn't possible to climate-control a warehouse, and even then it would have been prohibitively expensive until fairly recently. So now you basically can't do it that way and still preserve a whiskey's regional character.
      For newer craft whiskies with no history behind them it's certainly possible, I'd think. But even then I'd guess slower aging isn't always desirable.

    • @ericschwab409
      @ericschwab409 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The cost of doing this would really eat into profits and the alcohol in the air in the necessarily closed off building would be a fire/explosion/health hazard beyond current conditions that would have to be mitigated through engineering means. In the end, the whiskies would all cost a lot more.
      Also, you need some seasonal variation in the temperatures in the rack houses in order to get the whiskies in the barrels to permeate the wood. In effect, the natural heating and cooling cycles in temperate areas of the world are the best and cheapest means to effectively age whisky.

    You need a chandelier in the destillery made from nothing but old Macallan M bottles. I raise my hand to volunteer

  • @CheeseTaterson

    Man, the cheapest for Ardbeg 10 here (Indiana of all places!) is $50.
    Then again, this state's never really had much of a drinking culture aside from Budweiser. :/

      Leave the Land of Mullets! Go to Kentucky or somewhere that there is a drinking culture.

    Why no peated and sherried Westland? for shame your moochiness. Also a sad day as I learned Hibiki 17 will be phased out of production soon.

    Crap! Rex grabbing bottles reminded me of a movie. I can see the scene. Can't remember the actor's name. He is walking down the driveway in a robe, picking up things as he goes along including a deck chair. Crap!!!! It is on the tip of my tongue!!

    I miss the higher level of sheer adolescent ridiculousness between these two. It's lacking in the current videos. Normally, I would say "Get your (CORK NOISE) together!", but in this case, "Get your (CORK NOISE) un-together and start (CORK NOISING)ing around!"

      I agree. My favorite part of these videos is when Daniel nerds out. I get that Rex wants to make the videos more entertaining but when it gets to more jokes than whiskey, I feel like I'm missing out on the som knowledge.
