This is really one of my go-to's. I get it here in alaska for $36. Such a warm and sweet rye that I use it for many of my whiskey cocktails and will sipnit straight all day long.
So, being a native New Orleanian, I have to note that the Sazerac was invented in New Orleans and still served all over the French Quarter. There are different versions, and the original was cognac and absinthe, but the version most often made now is Rye Whiskey, sugar or simple syrup, Pernod or Herbsaint (Anise liquor), a dash of Peychaud's Bitters, and a twist of lemon peel.
Nice vid! Also, there's also Peychaud's Bitters in the Sazerac. It's like an Old Fashioned but with different bitters and a glass coated in Absinthe. Cheers!
@@mfpeden why toss out perfectly good absinthe when a dash of absinthe in the cocktail has essentially the same effect as a rinse? Don't throw out absinthe my friends.
Please do a Buffalo Trace/Sazerac vertical rye. Start with the Sazerac, go to the Sazerac 18 and finish with the Thomas H Handy. That would give you a different look at Rye Whiskey.
The flavors you found in the craft ryes are found in MGP distilled products (High West and Bulleit are MGP produced). Which is typically where craft distilleries get their products to finish/blend.
@@tde2019 Bought one today in Baltimore County for $54.99 (pre tax), on sale from $59.99. I've bought it as low as $20.00. When I first started drinking it, about twenty years ago, I contacted the distributer and they gave me a list of all the stores that bought Sazerac and I would buy up what I could. It only comes out twice a year.
@@matthewrinehart2367 I was able to get a second bottle a few weeks ago at MI state minimum of $27.99 but only because it was offered to me from behind the counter at a store I frequent
Dude this rye is money. I really like this stuff alot. It's got a nice spice to it, a nice bite towards the end and a nice slight sweetness it's a good buy in my opinion. I'm not a sommelier by any means but that's what I got.
I am sipping on a glass of Sazerac now, and I love it. Rye whiskey is definitely a favorite of mine, and Sazerac rye is going to become one of my daily drinkers.
So I bought a bottle of Bunnahabhain 12 yesterday, and am I the only one that thinks it smells and tastes remarkably similar to a bourbon? I got lots of stone fruit/cherry and sweet caramel notes, which I get a lot with bourbon. I feel like this a great whisky to get someone into scotch from bourbon, or vise versa. Cheers!
Classic Sazerac cocktail: chill your drinking glass with cube ice. Mixing glass with 3 ice cubes, 4 shakes of Peychaud’s bitters, 1 shake Angostura bitters, 2oz of your favorite rye. Stir and set aside. Empty your now cold drinking glass and add enough Absente to coat the sides of the glass. Strain your drink into your drinking glass and squeeze a fresh lemon twist over the drink. It is a classic New Orleans cocktail that won’t disappoint!
I picked up a store pick single barrel for 19.99 while in the New Orleans. I have to hold back from drinking this whole bottle it’s sips so easy nice and sweet.
Daniel Correction marker... back to 0. The Sazerac is Rye/Brandy, Sugar, Peychaud Bitters with an Absinthe Rinse. Peychauds or New Orlean style bitters is almost always essential.
Recently started expanding my whiskey horizons past JD since watching your videos (especially the top beginner whiskeys). I thought Makers Mark was a good bourbon. Then I tried Buffalo Trace. I feel like i can finally see in color now. Thanks for the suggestions, knowledge, and the hilarious content. Also, Monkey Shoulder is pretty great too
Sazerac (cocktail) isn't really mixed with absinthe. Its in an absinthe washed glass. Some bars will have a little spray bottle to coat the inside of the glass, but it's still a minimal level of absinthe. Anything more than that and you'd only get the black liquorice taste
so i'm new to whiskey, and have really enjoyed the videos! I started with Makers and thought it was ok then i found the tribe and tried Glenfiddich 12 and became enlightened. What i'm wondering is if i should go ahead and buy a Glencairn or norlan as i continue to dive more into the world of whiskey. Will it really make a big difference for me, being brand new to whiskey, or will it not really make a difference until i get more used to whiskey as a whole? Thanks!!!
I’d say to you it will make a difference if you really wanna get into nosing whisky but if you drink it in a rocks glass without really paying attention to what it smells or drink it on the rocks, don’t need a Glencairn! My opinion ;-)
Funny thing about the sazerac cocktail: you can make it using ingredients that are all made by the Sazerac company (except sugar and lemon peel). They make Sazerac rye, Herbsaint (absinthe substitute), and Pechaud's bitters
So my first actual bottle of whisky was green spot. I found it ok but couldnt really make out all the complexity like you guys did. I also couldnt find the infamous butter note that is supposed to be so common in irish whisky. when ever you refer to a buttery note or taste do you mean a oily texture or an actual taste of butter. just trying to understand the terminology a bit better. keep it up guys!
Thanks for the review guys. Can not wait to see you both at the opening. Also I hope you liked the other selection given to you. Daniel thanks for remembering that Sazerac taste like Barrel. I gifted a bottle of Barrel which was a store pick from Oak Liquor Cabinet on Research Boulevard, but forgot to give my name when I dropped the bottle off. Hopefully this does not get lost in the comments. Cheers you Magnificent Bastards!
Dang, was that you? For some reason, on our gift spreadsheet, the Barrel bourbon was listed as from someone else. But we just shot the video of it, and it's airing tomorrow. I'll message Chad to do the edits and see if we can fix that.
Its not a big deal. Thanks for reaching out. Never really expected you to get the time. Both of you have a lot of priorities. Also hope you get to enjoy the Clynelish too.
I gotta stop gifting so many whiskies to you guys and let other people get on the patron saint list. I feel kinda bad about dumping all those bottles for review. But the Woodford was great and the Knob Creek is even better in my opinion. Trying to help out the Tribe on bottle at a time. Just thinking about how many gift bottles you are going to receive at the launch party is going to be over whelming. Are we thinking about doing a community review of a certain bottle on the reddit/facebook/whiskeytribe website anytime soon? Having that would be a great guide for new and experienced whisky drinkers. So " the people" can crowd source and follow certain tribe reviewers. Finding a someone who has the same tasting profiles as you is tough, but the deeper the pool the easier it might to find those reviewers. Would love to help set something like that up if you are interested. Thanks for reaching out.
One of my first whiskey purchases was the Sazerac Rye and wasn’t a big fan. Since then I’ve had the Double Rye from Highwest and absolutely love it! Are those two just completely different ryes or is my pallet just changing?
I think they are fairly different. Sazerac has reportedly around 51% Rye in the mashbill and High West has a higher Rye %. It’s a blend of 95/5 Rye/Barley + another 80/20 Rye/Barley (not sure about the second cause I think it changed a few years ago..)
just grabbed a bottle of this rye, no dill on the taste but all i can smell is dill and pepper after hearing you mention that, idk if it’s the ower of suggestion or what but it’s freaking me out
I always feel like I get almost like a fresh picked mustard seed on the nose of this one which I’ve always liked. It was the first eye I ever really liked and I still love it to this day. There are better ones out there but this one never lets me down 😋😋😋
Automatic upvote for the "Three Amigo's" reference.
Automatic upvote for getting the Three Amigo's reference!
I found this at my local Costco for $23! Awesome price for a great rye!
To coat the glass with absinthe for a Sazerac, I keep some in a 2oz spray bottle. Much easier than trying to swirl it around to coat the sides.
This is really one of my go-to's. I get it here in alaska for $36. Such a warm and sweet rye that I use it for many of my whiskey cocktails and will sipnit straight all day long.

Picked up a bottle of this today for $23. For the money, one of the best deals in Rye Whiskey
Best rye with rittenhouse and sazerac. Or Bulleit bourbon for mixing
Daniel forgot the Peychaud's bitter in the Sazerac. Zero days sir.
DAMN IT

Sazerac is one of my go-to rye whiskeys.
Maybe it's because I'm in Louisiana, but I just bought it for 25 dollars after tax. Very tasty for it's price!
I’m in TX and picked up a bottle yesterday for $26.99. Really excited to try it!
In Metairie. Rouses has it on sale for $17, I think? Total Wine also lists it for $17.99. Not sure if it's a Louisiana thing or not.
Only one bottle near me in NJ & it’s $90! Luckily my friend from upstate NY got one for me for $28 loll
The flavors you found in the craft ryes are found in MGP distilled products (High West and Bulleit are MGP produced). Which is typically where craft distilleries get their products to finish/blend.
Saz may be budget, but it's often damn hard to find.
Thus making it no longer budget is some parts of the country. Today was the first time I've ever seen this on a shelf near me and it cost me $39.99
Total wine and more Nola 17.99. Price

If you live someplace Flaviar ships to, it's $26 there (May 2022).
MSRP is $30, but many places treat it like a limited edition and price more in the $50 and up range.
Luckily I was able to find it for $30. The place I bought it from sells one bottle at a time, and makes your promise not to resale, but to drink.
I just bought a bottle for 26.99
I think his love of Islay Scotch has distorted Daniel's view of what "budget" is.
contentioushackery agreed
Honestly! As a bourbon drinker “budget” is under $20, this stuff is $30+

I get that same citrus note. I love using this for whisky sours, it’s delicious.

Sazerac is really good in a Manhattan. Add in some Woodford Barrel cherries and it is magical

the cocktail is rye whiskey, sugar, Peychaud's bitters strained into an absinthe rinsed rocks glass. It's served up.
Got lucky today with the allocation. Ended up with Blanton’s, Weller Special Reserve, and Sazerac Rye. I’m very happy.
Bought it in TN today $31
100% agree this is a great budget rye. I hate to say that I don't love the Sazerac cocktail, but maybe it was just the bartender making it.
I'm not a fan either, but I really don't like absinthe.
Peychauds is an ingredient you forgot to mention that really gives it the nice spices to the cocktail.

Just got a bottle of this and hated it. (Im a peat head) - but that's interesting history - I'll have grab some absinthe.
Good luck finding it for $30 lol anything linked to Buffalo trace is high
Its 19.99 in the bay area. Some of the best value rye there is.
A variable plethora is a favorite saying of mine!!
The best use for Sazerac is to mix it with something. It's fairly smooth, but flat. It lacks the body of a good rye. Compare it to Knob Creek.
Templeton Rye is another nice rye. Not quite budget, but not a wallet-buster. I get it in NYC for about $45.
Given the plethora of patron saints, what's the Whiskey Vault pantheon?
What rye would you go for before ??
Im surprised i havent seen a j&b rare review yet considering how popular it is. Would fit right into this budget reviews

Love the Three Amigos comedy !! A plethora
Just found this video. Kudos. Sazerac rye is a very good cocktail whiskey, not so much a sipping whiskey.
Also in the uk it’s not budget, I paid £50 on master of malt!!!
Was it worth it?
$30 MSRP
Need to review Hochsteters vatted rye
Absinthe wash, paychauds bitters, sugar / syrup, rye
Baby Saz is very tasty. Goes down smooth and refreshes all the way through the finish.
you guys need to review kentucky owl rye
Just got a bottle in the clearance isle in Walmart for 15 bucks!!!
Do you guys have a core expression in mind for the new distillery? Bourbon, Rye, Scotch etc?
Definitely not a budget rye in Europe. Pretty expensive but still my favorite for Old Fashioned cocktails
not budget in Australia either $140 bucks a bottle
Damn I love Sazerac. Too bad not available in Finland. Only in some bars.
Hey legends, can you please review that bottle of Royal Brackla 12 behind you? I have been eying it off for episodes now. Thanks mateys.
Another great video!Glenfinnich 21 rum cask
Use to be a budget bourbon now $65
Why does that bottle cost the equivalent of $70 in the uk ? Is it still budget at that price ?

14 distilleries. Holy moly. It will be glorious
$56 in Canada at the LCBO... double what I would consider budget. 😔

kinda new to whisky what is the best temp to keep it at

I'll be waiting.
