    ** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
    **A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.

I've dabbled with "higher end" bourbons and this time decided to grab something from the bottom shelf just to see what it was like by comparison, and I've gotta say I was pleasantly surprised! This stuff is good! It might not be the most complex drink out there, but it definitely holds its own, and I like the history behind it too. So, cheers! A big thumbs up (and bottoms up) to good ol' James Crow!

Old Crow is $9 here. $9. NINE! Where I am in Oregon, by the way. Notes are always kettle corn and sweet molassesy goodness then it’s gone with no lasting finish at all. It’s a background whiskey even when trying to sit and think about it.

What I have always liked about Old Crow is that while it is somewhat rough, there is a definite note of sour, fermented corn that carries through into the finished liquor and I really don't find that even in more expensive bourbons. At some point I need to throw some oak charcoal into a bottle of Old Crow and see what happens.

    • @leeeiner7188
      @leeeiner7188 ปีที่แล้ว +3

So, done did it. Put a half-gallon of Old Crow on two ounces of toasted French oak chips, let it set for ten days, and strained it.
I have no regrets. The results are smooth and yet with plenty of flavor and backbone. Don't take my word, try it yourselves and see what you think!

I'm becoming a fan of budget whiskey. In my city (Omaha, Ne), I can get a 1.75 of Old Crow for under $21. Sometimes closer to $19. When looking for something just to drink or something to mix, Old Crow is my go to for price vs flavor compromise. It doesn't replace my absolute favorite whiskey, Suntory Hibiki harmony, but if I'm looking for a whiskey I can share with a lot of people, Old Crow has it's place.

I have to laugh at this stuff. My wedding was held at a fairly upscale place. Before the wedding my Dad and I went to decide on the liquor list. At the end of the meeting I told the owner thatI also wanted 2 bottles of Old Crow added to the list. The owner became very indignite and said that Old Crow was not a brand that he would even think about serving a drunk much less a patron of his establishment. I explained to him that a very dear and old Uncle was attending the wedding. Uncle Nick was bringing an envelope full of $5 bills and every drink that he had that was not Old Crow he would burn one of the $5 bills. After some heated discussion and threatening to move the wedding ton another establishment the owner finally but ungraciously decided to allow the Old Crow. I guess 20k did a lot of talking back in the day (1978). Yep and Uncle Nick came thru with 100 $5 bills.

Bottom shelf price $3000 a shot. No joke. They have many pre prohibition and bottles aging during prohibition, as well as great cognac, scotch, rum. Worth knowing if you like good liquor.

Wish Beam would revamp this-at least make a bottled in Bond version like they did with Old Overholt Rye (and while they’re at it bring back the screw cap/generic Old Granddad Bonded bottle design and thus complete/bring back their one time “three olds” ad campaign). Beam-Suntory honestly pissed me off when they started redesigning their bottle shapes/packaging (ditto with Wild Turkey). I miss the days when the look of a bottle of bourbon said “unhip old man” and brands weren’t trying to be new and sexy. This bottle of Old Crow (like 9$ in much of the country) reminds me of those days.

Old crow TODAY has the same mash bill as Jim Beam, is made by the same company, and is simply aged 3 instead of 4 years. Unless you really know your bourbon I seriously challenge you to sip some Old Crow neat and some Jim Beam normal white label neat and tell me the difference. For all intents and purposes it's the same. You can definitely sip it neat, over ice, or it's perfect for a cocktail and you won't feel bad about it because it's not a $50, $100 or $300 bottle. It's sub $15 a fifth around me you can get it for $10/750ml. There ARE some disgusting gnarly "whiskeys" in that price range like Canadian Mist/Five Star/Ten High etc. This isn't one of them. My favorite budget bourbon hands down.

John Christensen What do you mean by effects on other distillers? I can’t imagine that it will. There might be some special edition bottles, but really I don’t see those barrels changing the market much. Especially given the survival of many of the barrels. 1792 and Very Old Barton might get slightly more expensive. But that’s all I would imagine.

I have a question about grains. So bourbon seems to always have barley and either rye or wheat along with the corn in the mash bill, and all of these grains are used to make whiskies on their own except for wheat it seems? Is wheat too simple on It's own? Also what about grains like oat, quinoa, triticale, millet etc?

About the heat in Texas in August... (distillery launch party)... I've been to SIGGRAPH in Dallas in August numerous times, and the experience for me was always just spectacularly amazing heat. Even flying there from Daytona Beach I was routinely blown away by the heat. I remember that biz about "it's a dry heat", but it was just so hot! I remember needing to go indoors ASAP to get in to the air conditioning.
How can you have an outdoor event in the Austin area in August? What's the plan in case your 1000+ guest are suffering in the heat?
Major sized tents to offer shade? Maybe those outdoor 'misting' gizmos that make a cooling spray?
I assume everyone will be drinking whisky. That should make it worse. Water. What about cold bottled water? Iced. What about lots of ice.
Even if you don't reply here... I just think maybe my question and my skepticism and possible suggestions might help...
    Cheers!

For me, depends what you're doing.
If you're in the shade, Houston feels hotter. Out in the sun, you know that feeling when you open an oven and get punched in the face by the heat? Austin is like that but the feeling goes on for hours."
Oven. Punched in the face by the heat. Feeling goes on for hours. (Ba-dump-bump)

I can get Old Crow at my local Market for $8-$10. It's meh. I like Evan Williams better for Bourbon. But for that price, $10 for 1 liter of Trader Joe's Blended Scotch is my choice. I love that stuff.

Dr Crow recipe lost - my bet is its close to KC single barrel like they when they used to ship barrels and the bartenders would bottle it.

I was expecting a or an opinion /comments from you on the B.T. bourbon warehouse crash. ' read several news stories all say 9000 barrels fell. No one has given an estimate of broken barrels, one and I forget ... said there was visible liquid running down a hill from under the co lapse. If anyone I know has an inside to this it's you.

If there’s a special event happening or anyone’s bday, then yes I purchase Maker’s Mark or whatever the folks prefer, but just to keep in the house & drink for a buzz before bed, Crow is good. Who needs a “fancy, expensive buzz”?! Plus, I have Marine Corps & Navy friends who drink like they’re dying tmw, so NOT gonna waste money on whiskey that is gone in a day every weekend.

Legend has it that when critics of Gen. Ulysses S. Grant complained to President Abraham Lincoln about Grant's drinking, Lincoln replied, "I wish some of you would tell me the brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals."
Grant's favorite brand is said to be Old Crow, a Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey ...
Rex, just cause Daniel says he don't Prank, don't me he don't Prank, it just means you don't know when he Pranks ... ever got an unexplained bellyache, had unexpected car trouble, can't find your keys, your WALLET ??? Why do you think the Somm almost always wears a mischievous grin?
