Before AC : Black Flag, the closing realistic game about pirates for me is Sid Meir's Pirates (2004 version). Sadly, there are not much typical games with these kind of mechanic like this anymore.
there was also the Age of Pirates 2 game, more realistic looking and with different gameplay but giving a similar experience! I also played that game to death. Easy to mod too!
Not to forget the depth of the naval combat. You got different ships with different speed, maneuverability, gun number, crew number... Which you can also upgrade. You can choose how to fight your battles. Not simply shooting down a healthbar, and after that you have to bord the ship. No, can do that immediately. If you can manage a full, healthy enemy crew. Or you put canister shot after canister shot into a troop ship, until you dont have to bord it at all, because it just surrenders. Or... Or... Or... So many possibilities and no pirate game since captured that.
@@black_dahlia8256if this was their goal from the beginning it's even worse, this shit is boring AF, the best thing about ac4 was going to attack ships (actually boarding them) and when you got bored go do other things, like explore on land search for hidden treasures and all that stuff. To be fair, nobody ever said that you would get what you are talking about! Hell, even in the cinematic trailers there was no sword fighting. Don't get me wrong, i would love to get a complete game like that, but that would be a very very big project, even for Ubisoft!
@PirateModer But what was expected had already been done in AC Black Flag, so it's a reasonable expectation. I also expected the multiplayer to be similar to Black Flag, but they stripped it of everything that made it so fun. And a "very very big project". Dude we're talking about a billion dollar company who've made games like AC Odyssey, AC Valhalla, Far Cry 6, Pandora, all within the last decade, they should be able to do a multiplayer game where players shoot at ships and board ships, and travel to islands on foot.
I was excited to play this when it was announced, and randomly got a code to play the beta. After less the two hours I realized I could be playing Sea of Thieves instead….and I’ve never played it before. So I’m now 10 hrs in to becoming a Pirate Legend. Thank you, Ubisoft!
now this was the brutally honest review i needed... thank you man for the real advice! If they spent more time working on a grounded pirate life, this would be so much better. Hopefully Ubisoft takes the criticism and tries to make something better out of it in the future.

@@IskenderCaglarM41B441well, it doesn't need a remake. That's true. But, it'll be worth it in my opinion because we get to replay one of the best AC games out there and all that with modern graphics and a bigger open world with hopefully more stuff to do. Although with today's Ubisoft i'm starting to feel like their newest games look worse than their older ones especially when it comes to cutscenes and character models so my excitement isn't really that high. But, as far as gameplay and open world exploration, i hope they'll get a certain number of things right and actually make this remake worth buying.
Cool 👍I have no clue what your saying. I'd be more than happy with a 60fps update. I've bounced off black flag more than any other assassin's creed game because of the trailing missions, they ruin the flow for me. Which is a shame as the gameplay is some of the best in the series.

Cheers for the grounded review. It has been interesting seeing the various reviews for this across TH-cam, it sometimes feels very much like there are 2 versions of the game out there and being played depending on the review. It was going to take something extraordinary to kindle interest in the game, nothing about it seems to suggest you can live the pirate life. Sea of Thieves scratches that itch, even with all the bugs it has.

They were thinking of a naval focused game? Stop being a sheep, play Skull and Bones with the expectation that its entirely ship focused and you will find it is actually enjoyable. And lets not pretend getting off the ship in sea of thieves is a big deal, to do what? Dig up the same treasure over and over? Spam left click to smack skeletons with as much engagement as swinging a sword in minecraft? To slowly reload your gun with the 5 shots youre allowed until you run off to find a box with more cannonballs? Its garbage and you know it.

How do they do fk this up? They accidentally make assassins creed the best pirate game at the time, then make a generic pirate game. You made a game that has a complex but fun sword fighting mechanic (for honor). What is Ubisoft thinking rn?
I much prefer the ability to have each friend control their own ship I personally hate that in sea of thieves I get a I either steer the ship or shoot a single cannon when war ships are supposed to have dozens of cannons. Even the galleon in sea of thieves feels pitiful because the deliberate decision of making everyone work on one ship
@@esdrasfilipe431 That's why people play sea of thieves and will keep on playing it when S&B releases, but I think some people are looking for an experience where you get to be the SHIP and fire volleys of cannonballs at other ships. In black flag I felt that to be one of the most powerful and satisfying feelings in the game.
dumb dumb war ships have dozens of canons, and dozens of persons, each uses one individually, and one person helms the ship. Sea of thieves mimics that perfectly. You want to be able to drive shoot 20 canons and repair the ship all by yourself, yeah thats a lot more realistic....The only pitifull thing is you thinking that you made any kind of sense. Go play black flag if you want to play a racing game that shoots canons
I have a friend that said (while we were playing sea of thieves), that theres a game coming out like black flag. I knew what he was talking about and wouldnt listen to me to not get it (if it stays like this of course). Tbh, he did get MW3 (mw2 dlc). He was also saying "Some people we know would be asking to get and play it", and that he'd be "forced" to play it. I don't think he knows how bad of a game this is, and to top it all off- This is "Not" Black Flag or anything even close. OH WAIT, I know what this is like! It's like that one pirate game on mobile, that tried to copy the Mobile version of black flag. "*tried*"
Pretty much everything you mentioned is exactly what I felt about it when I played. To me, Skull and Bones looked more like that the devs of AC:Black Flag used as influence by saying "Hey...this looks like a cool idea. Let's amp it up and fix all the ways it screws up"
I installed yesterday, and the moment I realized I couldn't do anything besides roam with the ship and hit stuff, I felt like uninstalling right away. I still gave it a chance, "MAYBE it gets better" I thought, but I'm on my tier 4 ship and shit is the same, just tankier enemy ships... This game belongs on mobiles, definitely not a fully fledged PC/Console game. Feels more like a minigame. I'd play the hell out of it if they simply took all sea content from Black flag and made it an MMO, that should include naval battles, exploring islands, out of ship combat and all the shit you mentioned in the video. Doubt I can play this even if it goes free.
A Game with no campaign, no sword fight, no jumping, no climbing, no swimming or diving, no island exploration and no boarding... sounds like a pretty trash open world pirat game. And the best thing is that it costs 80€ plus future battlepasses. Im so sorry for everyone who bought this game.
It’s a fun game man. Check it out at release. There is a huge amount of unfair criticism surrounding the game by a fan base that’s been hurt and lied too by Ubisoft. The game is pretty decent as of the beta though. There is a lot of legit complaints but so much of it is personal opinion expressed as undeniable fault in the game.
The ships look cool and some effects are really nice but overall this game looks really rough especially gameplay wise. I also really hope this game gets updated a lot maybe a melee fight update etc...
I mean it looks great, the ship battles seems great from the looks of it. But, knowing you can even board and fight and its automated and there's not that much freedom which they could've done but, it's not like we thought so
The funniest part is that you can "miss" the boarding. If you are close to a boardable ship your crew throws out the hooks. Well their range is very short and it can miss.
@@thehiddenone2875I think it was an improvement compared to the previous mechanic of press button and 100% succeed. At least now they added a layer of player skill etc. I hope they can add more rpg elements to the boarding success like rope strength, rope length, furniture that boosts these stats, etc
I remember that after the game got announced, many many people compared it to black flag rather than sea of thieves (after it got released). Honestly we all wanted what black flag was, but multiplayer, obviously with some changes to adapt to the multiplayer style. Bruh i still dream of the black flag experience but in multiplayer, both boarding, ship battles and building your fort
Ubisoft hasn’t made a truly immersive assassins creed since black flag, an immersive far cry since far cry 3. Or an immersive watchdogs since watchdogs 1. This pink hair, firework rocket launcher, arcade style Ubisoft gotta go
As I was also in this beta, I completely agree with him, ship combat is fun but the boarding had me unimpressed. What I found the most irritating were the immense amount of loading screens and how long they took... Not worth 60 euros. maybe 20-30 is a better price
i played the beta and i had so much fun playing. swapping between things to do, doing quests, then hunt for blueprints for upgrades, get my resources, and sometimes just going around aimlessly and hunting random ships. I even did some trading! but most fun of all for me was, configuring your ship, your look, the customizibility just worked for me.
Sure but are you willing to pay 60-70 bucks for this experience. If it was half the price I might think about buying because I had fun playing it but the price doesn't justify it.
that's a fair point, i'd have to think about it to buy it at that price. like, i would buy it if i really feel the want to play it by the time it comes out. otherwise i'd give it some time. thing is i don't play a lot of games anymore and this one had my attention for a the whole 6 hours of the beta in one sitting. again, it depends of how much i want it by the time it comes out.@@Lorvay
Ubisoft management is a complete mess. They seem to ditch things people like, attempt making things that people did not want to b e made years ago and so on.
Ubisoft should hire this guy for all of the ideas and creativity for all of the new games, just looking at one tenth of his videos and there's already a ton of exciting and intriguing ideas and content for new Assassin's Creed games and even some others like Watch Dogs. Ubisoft should start asking the fans for opinions instead of just choosing and hoping for the best, and what other guy is more fit for this?
playing the open beta now, and I agree 100% with your thoughts.. it's not good. and certainly not the "quadruple-A" game ubisoft execs are claiming it is.
I played in the open beta and I enjoyed it more than most games I've played. I definitely want to buy it (and will do so when it's discounted, as I do with all games I buy).
I think they know it too. Thing is, they took federal funds to create the game, so they're legally bound to publish something. I think money ran out, and they wanted this thing off their backs after all these years. I have a bad feeling they kept it restricted at 6hrs so players wouldn't see the entire game, and get disappointed.
For me skull & bones reminds me to Pirates of the Carribean Online from like 2007. Easy to play, just a relaxed and lay back kind of game. In the 3 hours of open beta i played, i didnt meet any kind of spawn camp/griefers. Everyone was chill and when in combat with AI ships, other players helped me killing the AI and when I helped others they didnt attack me aswell. So great community so far.
I just wasted three hours of my life on the open beta of this mess. The last hour was trying to get acacia logs, that were taken by other players before I could get to them. I am grateful that I got to see how crappy it was in time to cancel my preorder.
if a game launches unfinished, you should never buy a game from that studio until they repair their reputation, ubisoft havent made a game worth praising since the 2nd assassins creed
@@neodiniankatanaflake9666 that’s not true at all. They’ve released a few bangers since ac2 even if you don’t agree. And arguably it is complete. The whole live service thing kinda sucks but it’s gotta start somewhere
I would pay $60 for it I think. After having played a few closed betas and the upcoming open beta I think I’m willing to pay $60 for it. However I will. Or preorder or buy a premium edition. I think both of those are poor practices for any game/company. Regardless I personally do think it’s worth it for ME. And it’s not unfinished. It’s the same as most of these live service games where they add content over its life cycle. And in that respect Ubisoft actually has a pretty good track record and have shown some future updates/ more ships they are gonna add ect. Take Rainbow six siege for instance or the division or for honor. These are still supported with content from Ubisoft. Prolly more than ea can say. A low bar I admit lol but still I think we should give it a chance and if it’s garbage when it releases than we can all agree to go in on it and Ubisoft.
I've never been less interested in a pirate themed anything, ever.... Why tf aren't they listening, more importantly, why the fuck are they still bothering 😅
The best thing Ubisoft could've done is remake black flag on today's technology with the previous ac titles formula of a huge open world, character customisation, unique pirate myth/ legendary weopons and items along with sea creatures making what would've been the best pirate fantasy instead of this tragic mess there charging us for including dirty microtransactions 🤮🤮
My little conspiracy theory is that Ubisoft wanted to scrap this game YEARS ago but didn't, because they are contractually obligated to complete this game due to a deal they made with the Singaporean government.
This game was a money laundering operation that lasted a decade. This is to be expected when nation states subsidizes a private company with tax funds. (Singapore)
You know its a *ubisoft* game when it has been delayed 6 times, reviewers going in with little expectations and it still disappoints being called boring uncreative generic and overall meh?
Played the closed beta aswell and they just don’t seem to listen to the community and if I look at the naval combat the naval combat from black flag was 10 times beter
Played the alpha in December. Based on that gameplay and the roadmap, it's not worth a purchase. They explained to us on the side when we tested it that rare cosmetics will affect gameplay, season passes, and a warthunder-like grind for non premium users.
It's still a lot of fun. The CB was a small snapshot of what the game really is. Been testing for several years and people are in for a treat. Yes, I wish the ground game was like AC:BF but the rest of the game is a lot of fun, especially in groups.
Its just, I want a game that gives the progression that I got even in a tablet game (Assassins Creed Pirates) but gave me better graphics and was just better overall as I like sea of thieves but I have an itch that I cannot scratch with that game, which is progression and customization ( I mean weapon customization, not looks) and there is no other game that gives me that so even if it will be quite meh, I will probably buy skull and bones because there is just no other current game that can give me that sensation of starting as a small pirate and then having and controlling my own galleon and fighting other players on a wide map. This is so frustrating because I know it is not what I want completely but there is also nothing like it so I guess...it is what it is.
Ubisoft is like that company I just desperately want to do good. Like a disappointing sibling who you see making all the wrong decisions in life but you still want them to get better. They have some of my favorite IPs with so muchhhhh potential Assassins Creed is literally my favorite franchise Far cry is one of my favorite shooter franchises And For Honor is my most played Multiplayer game of all time. I can go on about how much I love the series they’ve created but holy crap have they just missed and missed. They need a new direction or CEO or something. I know they’re talented developers but they just can’t help but make mediocrity. Not cuz they’re not good, but because they don’t seem to have the right direction. I really want Ubisoft to succeed. But it’s hopeful

I agree. It should've.
I went back to sea of thieves the second I realized I couldn't leave my ship, what were they thinking
I much prefer the ability to have each friend control their own ship I personally hate that in sea of thieves I get a I either steer the ship or shoot a single cannon when war ships are supposed to have dozens of cannons. Even the galleon in sea of thieves feels pitiful because the deliberate decision of making everyone work on one ship
I prefer that tbh, it feels more immersive and realistic

dumb dumb war ships have dozens of canons, and dozens of persons, each uses one individually, and one person helms the ship. Sea of thieves mimics that perfectly. You want to be able to drive shoot 20 canons and repair the ship all by yourself, yeah thats a lot more realistic....The only pitifull thing is you thinking that you made any kind of sense. Pretty much everything you mentioned is exactly what I felt about it when I played. To me, Skull and Bones looked more like that the devs of AC:Black Flag used as influence by saying "Hey...this looks like a cool idea. Let's amp it up and fix all the ways it screws up"
I just wanted Black Flag but with multiplayer, man...
I'd play the hell out of it if they simply took all sea content from Black flag and made it an MMO, that should include naval battles, exploring islands, out of ship combat and all the shit you mentioned in the video. Doubt I can play this even if it goes free.
Our expectations were low but holly shit it just keeps sounding worse and worse

It’s a fun game man. Check it out at release. There is a huge amount of unfair criticism surrounding the game by a fan base that’s been hurt and lied too by Ubisoft. Ubisoft hasn’t made a truly immersive assassins creed since black flag, an immersive far cry since far cry 3. Or an immersive watchdogs since watchdogs 1. This pink hair, firework rocket launcher, arcade style Ubisoft gotta go
The one of the things I don't like about it is it's more focused on multiple player
Sadly Ubisoft is finished. This is the nail in the coffin. I miss the good days of assassins creed.
I feel horrible for anyone who had to work on this game. Imagine putting in chunks of your life to make a game that was doomed from the start.
I also got a private beta code and I very happily declined
I just wasted three hours of my life on the open beta of this mess. The last hour was trying to get acacia logs, that were taken by other players before I could get to them. I am grateful that I got to see how crappy it was in time to cancel my preorder.

But would you pay $60 for that? It appears to be rather a typical $20 game about a specific genre and to be played a few hours.
if a game launches unfinished, you should never buy a game from that studio until they repair their reputation, ubisoft havent made a game worth praising since the 2nd assassins creed

Literally all they had to do was revamp black flag with multiplayer and people would have been happy, wtf is this
I wouldn’t mind another delay if they added melee combat. I wanna jump on someone’s ship and go wild.
(Singapore)
we gamers are simple, we just want black flag with more options, like choosing ship, crews, basecamp, and way of life
You know its a *ubisoft* game when it has been delayed 6 times, reviewers going in with little expectations and it still disappoints being called boring uncreative generic and overall meh?
It’s all about HELLLDIVERS right now for me incredible game...
No melee combat? Yeah Im out. Ubisoft missed with this one. Ill just go back and play black flag instead
Played the closed beta aswell and they just don’t seem to listen to the community and if I look at the naval combat the naval combat from black flag was 10 times beter
I feel like this was a review of Black Flag not Skull And Bones.
The naval experience looks really arcad-ish too in my opinion. Sinking ships in 2 or 3 reloads within 10-20 seconds is not exciting at all.
WOW! I was really looking forward to this. I'll wait for the $19.99 sale price. Thanks!!!!!

They need a new direction or CEO or something. I know they’re talented developers but they just can’t help but make mediocrity. Not cuz they’re not good, but because they don’t seem to have the right direction. I really want Ubisoft to succeed. But it’s hopeful
As a person who only played black flag for the naval combat this looks pretty good to me
They need to not release this game until they have sword combat. Idk how they expect this game to sell well
