I am 66 years old, as far back as I can remember Florida has been having hurricanes, these events seem fairly common so to call them a disaster seems strange, just as strange is people who would live in a area where there is a chance every year of losing your home.
Wow....my thoughts are with all those affected. Anyone still thinking about moving to Florida? Its only gonna get worse in the coming years with the rising sea lvls and the 80 to 90 degree seas around the peninsula.
Trying to understand hurricane risk in Florida by watching the news is difficult or impossible. The point that's lost is that Florida is a big state. It has 1,350 miles of coast line (2,170 km for you). A hurricane hitting in the Sarasota area does not affect Miami, nor most other people in the state. Even when this storm got to me (it got within a few dozen miles), all it could do is knock over a banana tree. What I'm explaining is that if you see a hurricane hit next year, that doesn't mean it's the same area or same people. I've waited 35 years for a hurricane and didn't get one (until I finally got two in two weeks!). Where they hit is random, and any given spot is infrequently visited.
Its time to rebuild Hurricane proof homes. The idea is simple , have a house built like the old miltary Quonset hut military houses. Made of one foot thick concrete with re-enforced steel . The round shape of Quonset house will prevent lift. At wind speeds of possibly 300 miles and hour. Plus the city needs deep under ground sewers that can handle tons of water coming in. To prevent houses from getting flooded. Remove all big trees near houses. Or power lines. This might prevent power lines from going out. Also it could be very frightening knowing that Florida has mosquitos , snakes, and aligators. That might flow in this dirty water. The houses need to be built like Quonset hut. With concrete and re-enforced steel . This is my suggestion. I welcome any comments. To please prove me wrong ?
What about Quonset hut style storm shelters for those who don’t want to live in them all the time? Would they be super expensive to build? Places where neighbours could gather in the event of a major storm or hurricane? Just trying to think of alternatives. I live in W. Canada where we don’t get hurricanes. Edit: My condolences to those who have lost loved ones.
You don't need any of that. Normal houses built according to post-Andrew codes did very well. Protection for windows and hurricane rated doors (including garage door) is all you need. Houses that flood are typically houses built in areas without adequate drainage or elevation. And yes, Florida does have varying degrees of elevation and there are maps of flood zones. Don't build in a flood zone, and don't build so close to the ocean or a river, and typically you'll be fine.
Live near the ocean and this is the price. I should not have to pay for people's stupid decisions. Let them deal with the consequences from their own pockets. The best thing the government can do is abandon people to their own poor decisions.
Research weather manipulation people the us government has the tech to divert these storms yet these storms are more frequent these days an destructing cities where voters are mainly trumps 🤔 wow
That is true...I remember the National Guard on Jupiter Island 1/4 mile from my home in Hobe sound back with Hurricane Wilma and others. They not only cleaned up and restored power but kept out anyone who didn't live there. My place a hop skip and a jump away, was ignored for about a month...power out for weeks.

Let's all pray maybe that will help. But aren't all these prayers going to the same God that caused the hurricane? Maybe we can pray for more humans to make poor life decisions and live near a volcano next.
If that's the case, then why do different states have different premiums and different coverage and exclusions? Insurance is regulated at the state level.
