🌎 : JUNG DISTRICT, SEOUL (9.5/10)
Me and my dutch mate @iGoBart explore the smallest, most central district of Seoul, which is on the verge of collapse. Corporate Korea is destroying it's history and culture, which, according to one of the workmen has resulted in death. This industry and the people that worked here for 40 + years are in dire straits due to the rapid redevelopment of the city centre. But there's also a positive side of the video, a spanking from an Ajumma, meeting a celebrity at the flea market and all the gentle souls we met during the day! #seoul #southkorea #korea

Friend of watch repair shop owner says total cost 12K won. Shop owner says 9K. Dan says let's meet in the middle at 10K. I like the arrangement. Everyone is a winner.
Good deals!! That's how i do business back in UK!! Have you seen my other videos from my LET'S GU series??
Dan I've been watching your videos from back in the pandemic and have never commented but this video tipped me over the edge. My wife and I have visited Korea six times, have been doing korean lessons with a tutor for nearly 12 months and will be back in 한국 in October this year with plans to relocate permanently there within the next 5 years. Your philosophy and way you capture the true essence of Korean culture and its wonderful people is truly inspiring. It's the Korea that we also fell in love with Dan, not aesthetic cafes or instagram spots but instead the local spots filled with some of the world's most interesting and warm people....food and drinks not too shabby either. Keep uo the incredible work.
Good to hear from long time subscribers, glad you finally comment i love to hear from people!! Hopefully places like this are still there before you make the move!! I recommend studying with Talk To Me in Korean, they're stuff is really good!

Keep up the good videos Dan!
Cheers lad!! Thanks for commenting on my video, really helps my channel grow!! :D
Hi Dan, this is only the 3rd Vlog iv'e seen and i'm impressed,
absolutely amazing.👍

thanks a lot!!
this is some CRIMINALLY underrated content! Found your channel through TH-cam recs of your vlogs in Japan and now I'm watching your entire library!
FAN BLOODY TASTIC!!
“sadly the old korea is disappearing”....that is so sad to hear...you can hear the sadness and disappointment in his tone
all that area will be demolished very soon!! i will show more things like this in future LET'S GU episodes!! :D
I just want to say I love those noises when you move the camera. At 0:48 when you turn the camera around, you can hear the camera gear clanking around and it adds such a likeable charm to your videos, which are all fantastic.
you know....i was editing and thinking about that, wandering if people like it....good to know!!! :D thanks a lot !!
Great video Dan my grandfather went to Korea in the airforce it's interesting to think he may have visited some of the same places in your vlogs although in the early 60s it would've been way different
I'm gonna go back in 20 years time and see how much it's changed!! I'd love to have been there in the 60's
Love your videos Dan! Really motivating me to learn more korean.
study study study lad!!!
Dan, you make such amazing content! How is it possible that you only have 8k followers? I wish you all the best, you definitely should be in one row with bald, harald, sabbatical etc. Actually your content is even better.
I used to live close to this area, so I often walked around these districts. I love the older districts, with it's little shops and fleamarkets and elderly people. It has such a charme!
I don't know why i'm not at their level yet... but i'll be there soon!! Thanks for the kind words mate
The guy at the watch shop DEF gave author vibes. What a sweet guy. Great video! :)
I searched him and he used to be VP of Yahoo Korea. Wonder why he was intelligent
100% from his style haha
There was a part i didn't include in the video and he was showing me his watch he go from YAHOO

I love your video. I think this would be so important treasure in Seoul history.
i think korea will watch my video in the future to remember what the country used to look like!!
Another great watch Dan, I appreciate these videos very much. These will be an amazing piece of history that future generations in Korea and around the rest of the world can use to experience 2023 in an authentic way.
i really hope so, that's the idea! Koreans and everyone can see what Seoul used to look like before it was destroyed!!
Love how your capturing moments in time. It’s so sad there tearing down the old areas, they were my favourite places to see when I was there. They have no regard for the older generations, whom I am sure realise things change, but it’s as those they are erasing all memories of traditional Korea. Keep the videos coming xx
Thanks xx
It's been so long since I've been to Seoul, would be about 4 years. Everything looks so quiet! Thank you for making these videos. Makes me want to explore more.
Thanks for watching and commenting!! explore and tag me on instagram when you're out and about!!

I can’t believe you just walked right by all that vintage audio gear shops without scanning all the boomboxes and 70s stereos, I’m sure you were right next to one when you bought the coffee, I was stationed in camp Casey/ hovey from 87-88 and bought a super jumbo boombox brand new in tongduchang, still looking to rebuy my old memory 😢
ive got a few boomboxes like that back in england!
Hi Dan, I'm also from the north of England! I've only just come across your videos. I lived in Seoul from early 2007 to the end of 2008. I lived in Godoek in Gangdong-Gu. I'm going to be going back to Seoul next May 2025 for the first time since leaving. After seeing your commentary on areas that have been knocked down, I'm intrigued as to how I will experience the city again after all this time.

21:20 the reason why '평화시장' the clothing market was closed is they don't operate on day time on Sunday. Also, they have like 3 hour break time before night time business. They open like 20 hours a day, which means they are open grave hours too. They are whole salers and lot of business owners come to the market to buy clothes night time.
i'm glad i went back there in the week to see how busy it was!!
Your smile at 42:05 lol😂😂😂😂 So glad you got to drive it!
I wish you had more time with the author. I cracked up when he whipped out the English on you. He was quite dapper.
Hearing the gentleman at the end speak about the rent prices… I felt his honesty.
Such a variety of characters in this video! My trip to korea is now complete!! I have finally driven one! :D
I walked through Euljiro a few times back in May. It was amazing looking at all the tiny shops, I'd never seen anything quite like it. I was blown away by it all. Highly recommended to visit before it's gone.
same, all of these areas will be gone in 5 years!
It was interesting to watch how the gentleman with the hat said 12k won and the repair shop owner said 7K won and you said to meet half way at 10K won haha. Shop owner looked cranky but seemed nice and honest

Omg that interaction with the Japanese tourist. You threw all the Japanese phrases at him then ended with “bon appetit” 😂😂

@@whereisdan Sorry to tell you you’re officially an influencer…

Hahaha, the comedic timing was great. I love situations like this in language learning though. At a point you reach this early intermediate level which sort of puts you in this no-man's land when it comes to interacting in authentic situations. You know enough to give the locals the impression that you can follow what they're talking about, but in reality you're not yet at a level to take everything they throw at you - leading to some real "deer caught in the headlights" moments. It's happened to me on numerous occasions too.
Good on you keeping this in and showing your vulnerabilty. Shows that you don't take yourself too seriously and that you're open minded - as if your videos hasn't clearly showed that enough. Looking forward to Dobong-gu next week.
Yeah you're right, a lot of the times I'm winging it and translate later what they actually said!! Thanks for watching my videos mate!! :D
20:07 전태일 평화 시장. 전태일 A laborer and labor activist in South Korea, he started working at a sewing factory in the late 1960s in a market known as the 'Peaceful Market.' From 1970 onwards, he worked as a foundation worker and dedicated himself to advocating for workers' rights. Seeking to raise awareness about the harsh labor conditions, he demanded adherence to labor standards from the Park Chung-hee government and capitalist enterprises. However, during a protest, he tragically self-immolated by dousing himself with gasoline and setting himself on fire along with the Labor Standards Act, ending his life at the young age of 22.

Please make a documentary about Hoehyeon Citizen Apartments in Seoul. The city Government wants to demolish it, offering low payments to mostly elderly owners. One foreign owner(Only one) might get nothing. The previous government wanted to remodel it, but the current one is pushing for demolition. This might happen to Sewoon apartments too.

TMI for You
Surprisingly, there is an apartment building near the building that was built during the Japanese colonial period. (Not even Koreans know) Numbers 1, 3, and 4 below are apartments from the Japanese colonial period near Hoehyeon Citizen Apartment.
..........(Apartment during the Japanese colonial era).........................................
1. Mikuni Apartment (三國APT) Built in 1930 ( 16-23 Namsan-dong 1-ga ) The building still looks new and still has separate owners.
2. Golden Apartment (황금 아파트) Built in 1937 ( 154 Euljiro 5-ga ) Although it is a very old building, there are still separate owners by room and land.
3. Cheong un jang Apartment (청운장 APT) Built in 1937 (99-6, Hoehyeon-dong 1-ga) (*Closed, 1 building owner) It currently remains like a ruin, but has one owner.
4. Chwi san Apartment (취산 아파트) Built on November 25, 1936 and converted into a company building (49-4, Hoehyeon-dong 2-ga) 아일빌딩
5. Chungjeong Apartment (청운장 아파트 )1938 (30 Chungjeong-ro, Seodaemun-gu) - Originally, the plan was to preserve its form and remodel it into a public cultural space, but the mayor of Seoul recently decided to demolish it.

26:38 "I sent the money." What does that mean? What currency can you send from a phone in Korea?
I’m assuming he just means he sent local currency (KRW) via some sort of money transfer application.. although maybe I’m missing something? Why would it be any different, are there specific restrictions on currency transfer in Korea?
If you look a few seconds earlier, she has her bank account information posted on the upper right. So he used a banking app to transfer her the money. Sort of like Paypal or Venmo, but in Korea if you have a local bank account, sending money to another bank, as long as you know the other person's account number is instantaneous over the app. I assume this guy has a Korean bank account if he lives there.
You can pay online via bank transfer
