Alright I just finished watching all your playlists and I got to get this off my chest. You are perfect for this and your videos are great. It's raw, genuine, quirky, self-aware, and as natural as I have seen. What's on camera is the same as when it's off is my guess. You're real and just a good, funny, and interesting dude. Your companions are the living proof, from watching their channels and their progressive reactions. And that's so awesome. We all want deep inside these kind of experiences. Every video made me relive some of my travelling experiences, memories that I haven't touched in a long time. It's so effective because it's so pure. It doesn't even matter where you've been, or what it is, just some weird random connection opens up some of the highlights of travelling I forgot. And it's very informative and great promotion for the countries and people you visit as well! Ever thought of doing a livestream?
wow wow wow what kinds words!!! Firstly, thanks for watching all my videos you've really made me smile with this lovely comment. Yes you're right, i'm the same on and off camera, in fact when i'm off camera i'm sillyer and quirkier haha. I would do a livestream, but need to choose a platform. TH-cam livestream, or twitch? Wha would you like to see? :)
Fantastic episode! Trying on wigs with a crowd of onlookers was hilarious. That shop owner was definitely wearing one!! Then you hit up a stranger for a cig with the drunken "EOPPSeoYEO!" Followed by getting some footage inside one of these casinos. I've lived here ten years and never visited one. It was cool to see what they look like! Also, it's great that you randomly visit smaller shops that would never expect a waegukin to stroll in. Leads to some fun interactions and shows a real side of Korea no other channel seems to embrace. Good on ya!
Cheers Doug lad! I say "EOPPSeoYEO!" because in one of my earlier videos when i partied in Seomyon in Busan i asked a lad if he has a girlfriend and he said "EOPPSeoYEO!" haha More fun interactions in random places to come!! :)

Koreans don't want to bother the others with no reasons mostly. Korea is a very busy country, works so hard and everyone's in hustle living their lives. However, they will do almost everything they can possibly do to help you if you ask.
I really enjoy your Korea and Cuba videos, very entertaining and informative! Having lived in Korea for about 5 years on and off in the 1980s, Korea has changed dramatically. The areas you enjoy with the older homes were mostly constructed in the 60s and 70s after they tore down the old, tiled roof homes. Displacement of families was an issue back then as well. Unfortunately, due to the skyscrapers being constructed they have displaced many elderly people which created a high number of elderly homeless especially in Seoul. Rents and mortgages are unaffordable for many on pensions which are minimal at best. I was stunned to still see the "Kay-goki" market. I thought those were outlawed prior to the 88 Olympics. Korean men believe eating it is an aphrodisiac. An interesting fact you may not be aware of; when most Korean homes were gated, a string of Go-Chu peppers used to be strung around the gate to signify the birth of a boy. Thanks for your work and safe travels mate!
Thanks for that fun fact, i might share it in one of my upcoming videos! :) Also, thanks for commenting on my video, it's helpful for the growth of my channel and i like to interact with people that watch my videos! :)
@@whereisdan You are quite welcome! I could tell you some stories! Prior to the Olympics in 88, within a block of every major train station in cities such as Seoul, Taegu, Pusan, Taejon etc... they used to have "Ki-saeng" houses. In these small districts there were "shops" with large plate glass windows behind which the women would sit in fancy dress with numbers attached to their dresses. The Ajima would wave you in, if interested you picked a number and off you go... These areas that usually catered to Korean businessman and were posted with signs stating they were off limits to foreigners (Way-gook). Most foreigners did not know they existed. They were fairly classy streets, safe and the "off limits" restriction was rarely enforced. Prior to 2000 and all the exposure Korea has received, there were literally areas of Korea that reminded me of Sodom and Gemorrah. I remember one evening drinking with a gentleman by the name of Caligula...Lol.

The Chinese Yam is eaten for it’s “special quality” after having been finely grated: It gets super slimy. although it is also boiled in chunks like potatoes

I’ve been able to see the evolution of the yogurt carts. They were once just push carts, then they used push carts that were electric assisted (I can’t use my words today. 😂), and now… they can ride those suckers, have a Sun visor, and a hard top. Very cool! The employers seem to look out for them. One summer I even saw a mister attached to keep one lady cool (perhaps it was her personal mister).
Someone else commented and said their mum used to hand deliver yakult to people's houses and had to walk around for 12 hours a day! I'm going to try to drive one in an upcoming episode!! That would be a dream come true! :)
The guy dancing with the scissors is doing an old fashioned way of selling cheap traditional candy called yoet. They'd push a cart around town and sing and do the bit with the scissors to let kids know the candy guy was there. Once enough kids came, they'd make the candy on the spot out of a really simple set of a couple of ingredients and the scissors were part of the kit needed to make the candy.
For Yakurt lady, you can call them as " Fresh manager" that has been called and named by HQ at Korea Yakurt Company. I tried it when I was in Korea, most of them asked me .... Wow,,,,, this is the first time they been called.. every Korean call them "Ajum-ma" instead "fresh manager"... believe or not, they love to hear from anybody on street.... Also, Most common word of cheer by Korean always saying is "Fighting" not "Hwaiting" whatever you been saying.... Take care Dan.
3:39 The Yakult ajumma (middle-aged women) started their initial activities in 1971 with a group of 47 members. Yakult Korea, with its flagship product Yakult, embarked on the idea of creating a door-to-door sales organization utilizing the spare labor force of housewives, with the goal of providing consumers with fresh Yakult to drink every day. This marked the beginning of the Yakult ajumma's journey. The absence of male personnel among Yakult's door-to-door sales representatives stems from a similar context. According to a Yakult Korea representative, "The decision not to recruit male sales representatives is based on an internal assessment that consumers may feel somewhat uncomfortable with male sales representatives approaching them, initiating conversations, and visiting their homes before anyone else." They further stated, "There are currently no plans to recruit male personnel as door-to-door sales representatives.
The SimCityfication of Seoul is a shame!! I know some Koreans agree with it since Seoul needs housing and is the heart of Korea, but still, the city is losing its charm :( This also highlights South Korea's dependence on the Seoul capital area, which is certainly creating problems for the country and its other cities and regions Anyway excellent video like usual! You really went off the beaten path and showed us so many intricate things I didn't know about I saw quite a lot of ads while watching the video and let them all play through, I hope you will gain some monetization money from it!!

got a lot of time for that old boy, haha. the more you read or watch about the korean war and years following, you realise they pretty much went through hell on earth. korea received food aid and assistance from the world community until 1984 - undernourishment and springtime famines/lack of food were common even then! by the way, you in a wig needs to be a mini-series. you look like a tv presenter from 1970s east germany.
I know I'm going to get a lot flak for this but... I can't believe something that still exists in an advanced country like Korea is dog meat restaurants. You know these dogs are kept in a small pen all their lives exposed to hot summer and freezing Korean weather elements, never allowed to walk or run, only to be later brutally beaten to death for meat. I cannot imagine a life on earth worse life than that. I know TH-cam channel like this focuses on the pleasant sides of Korea but I hope people don't forget the dark realities as well so that necessary changes can be made. Dan, sorry about this kind of comment. I enjoy your videos.
It's crazy to think it still exits. @@peacew6 Good point peacew6. When me and my family were protesting against racism and violence against Asian Americans, one lady drove by and heckled us, yelling, "What about African Americans!" i'm not sure why you are so against modernization. the conditions of those old buildings are so bad. mold, bad plumbing the list goes on and on. honestly, would you live in one of them? they razed the area right across the street from me where i used to live until earlier this year. they would protest in the middle of the night for hours. i know not why. mostly i think it's due to financial reasons. that and all the shops on my side were turned into real estate agencies. i live in a high rise now. it's not all that great either because the monthly fees are basically racketeering. not sure if i'm making some sort of point. i'm just rambling :). basically, i'm saying i understand both sides and korea has a long way to go.

i'm glad you like my nose, even those it's quite large and protrudes out into the world! also i'mg happy you're enjoying my GU series! :)
It's so sad how many of the charming old neighborhoods pf Seoul have been torn down and now have no character. 1982 was an explorers paradise living in Seoul. And it was a novelty being a foreigner there. Most people in.many neighborhoods had never seen a foreigner
i wish i could visit then !
The Chinese Yam is eaten for it’s “special quality” after having been finely grated: It gets super slimy. although it is also boiled in chunks like potatoes
Sounds..... disgusting.
HA! Your are enjoying real Korea!!! Great
i try to in all my videos brother!! :D
I was in Korea about the same time as you and one of my most memorable experiences was eating and drinking in a place just like the one where you stopped for 막걸리. The people were so friendly. It will be sad if those places disappear 😢
This was one of my favorite districts! I'm trying to capture all the places like this in Seoul before they disappear !
Hi dan just found your channel love your videos the dog meat one was interesting you are very respectful of all the people you meet love kdrama so i was interested-to learn about Korean lifestyle keep the videos coming dan are you a Brit?
i'm british yes, where are you from? have you watched all the videos from the LET'S GU series?
I found some makgeolli in a store here, going to stick with wheat ale's.🥴
Could you hit up a bike repair shop, I'd be curious on what style of retro bikes they'd have.
haha it's not for everyone! i hated it when i first tried it, now im addicted to makgeolli haha. The retro bikes here are used by the textile industry to carry carpets, most people have new giants and specialized bikes
This was great entertainment………. Thanks for bringing us along……. Like your new hat bro….. but would have liked to see you get that wig….. A bit pricey just for a gag……. Take care…….
Maybe i'll buy one and wear it in an upcoming video!! :)
Hey like your content, consider making some shorts maybe you can do one like. " Asking koreans if they know this Famous korean song and getting there reaction from it " Cheers
i'm going to start uplooding shorts everyday in July when i get back to england, i have no time now!! Thanks for watching!! :)
oh wow you're from Leeds! Finally another northerner on youtube doing vids on Korea^^
Ey up!
14:02 "말이" is a word meaning "rolled". Not counting animals.
ahhhh ... but is it spelt the same?
@@whereisdan They are different in spelling. 말이 is rolled, and 마리 is counting animals. ex)돼지 한 마리, 개 두 마리, 돼지 백 마리

@@whereisdan yes!!!!!!
The guy dancing with the scissors is doing an old fashioned way of selling cheap traditional candy called yoet. They'd push a cart around town and sing and do the bit with the scissors to let kids know the candy guy was there. Once enough kids came, they'd make the candy on the spot out of a really simple set of a couple of ingredients and the scissors were part of the kit needed to make the candy.
thanks bro
For Yakurt lady, you can call them as " Fresh manager" that has been called and named by HQ at Korea Yakurt Company.
I tried it when I was in Korea, most of them asked me .... Wow,,,,, this is the first time they been called.. every Korean call them
"Ajum-ma" instead "fresh manager"... believe or not, they love to hear from anybody on street.... Also, Most common word of cheer by Korean always saying is "Fighting" not "Hwaiting" whatever you been saying.... Take care Dan.
how can i say fresh manager in korean?
It is simply called Fresh Manager, which is the English pronunciation.
There is difference between 말이 and 마리. 말다: roll(v) 말이:roll(n). 마리: unit of animals/fish counting. So 계란말이 is egg roll.
마리 is for animal counting !!!
thanks :D
Thanks for the info....maybe i can be the first male yakult sales ajuma in Korea?

The SimCityfication of Seoul is a shame!! I know some Koreans agree with it since Seoul needs housing and is the heart of Korea, but still, the city is losing its charm :( This also highlights South Korea's dependence on the Seoul capital area, which is certainly creating problems for the country and its other cities and regions
Anyway excellent video like usual! You really went off the beaten path and showed us so many intricate things I didn't know about
I saw quite a lot of ads while watching the video and let them all play through, I hope you will gain some monetization money from it!!
Thanks for watching the ads haha, TH-cam decided what ads to play and when!
SimCity Seoul is such a shame, i'm going to capture as much of this city on camera as possible before the charm completely disappears!! Thanks for watching as always! :)
Do not assume you know about this country after watching a couple of TH-cam videos coz Seoul area is certainly not creating problems.
@@hyukjaes South Korea's dependence on the Seoul capital area is actually something I learned last year in my population studies and demographics class at Hanyang University
Bloody hell another Northerner were a rare breed on here mate. Looking at heading to S Korea possibly and just come across your channel quality stuff
Hardly any northerners on this side of the world. They're all down the pub or drinking buckets in Thailand.
I'll be here till June 28th, then i fly back to Leeds to spend the summer drinking Bodingtons cans, Yorkshire tap water and spoons ales for £1.99 a pint.

I really liked that philosophical ending. Did you went to China? They had giant cities for much longer than us in Europe, it is because the farming of rice require a large united group of people it also explain the Asian mindset and the lack of individuality.
I've never been to China but i would love to go for sure!!
The official name of those ladies in Korean is 야쿠르트 아줌마. Just simple like that, and the company never hire men for that job positions. Only for ladies and esp. for 아줌마.

it's sad isn't it, i've seen a few of them!

Curious, how many languages do you speak?
3, very badly.
Hamburger? Lol do they have hamburgers too? Lol
yeah...but they're not too good! ...
got a lot of time for that old boy, haha. the more you read or watch about the korean war and years following, you realise they pretty much went through hell on earth. korea received food aid and assistance from the world community until 1984 - undernourishment and springtime famines/lack of food were common even then! by the way, you in a wig needs to be a mini-series. you look like a tv presenter from 1970s east germany.
I was thinking of buying a cheap wig and wearing it for an episode! I love the old korean ajoshis, they're a human race of their own haha
Dog meat ,horrible about time they banned that .Man's best friend.heartbreaking .
Damn, I really thought the dog meat days were gone but you really found a place like that!
There were a few places in that market, i didn't film them all!!
Dan you look like Anthony Kiedis from RHCP in that wig.

You are not in the tourist area that's why the dog stew sign
The only people i can imagine giving me slak for this video are koreans sat at their air con office desk thinking their country is perfect and be angry at me for showing something like this. It will be k-pop coffee shop instagram losers that will be annoyed. Poor dogs! Thanks for your comment!!

i'm not sure why you are so against modernization. the conditions of those old buildings are so bad. mold, bad plumbing the list goes on and on. honestly, would you live in one of them? they razed the area right across the street from me where i used to live until earlier this year. they would protest in the middle of the night for hours. i know not why. mostly i think it's due to financial reasons. that and all the shops on my side were turned into real estate agencies. i live in a high rise now. it's not all that great either because the monthly fees are basically racketeering. not sure if i'm making some sort of point. i'm just rambling :). basically, i'm saying i understand both sides and korea has a long way to go.
