Aquarium Co-Op I have a 60 litre tank, I have a red Bette with blue on the base of his tail. He got on really well with his original tank mates 5 Zebra danios. I just added 3 platy fish and 5 neon tetra. He was chasing them with his gills out for a few days but now he seems to be pretty fine with them being in there. I am worried however as he has developed a lump again underneath his body and I’m not sure what to do.

I've had my blue betta with red highlights for 2 years in a 2 gallon fish bowl. Just recently I started a 30 gallon tank. I got a wealth of knowledge from Aquarium Co op and am so thankful it is nearby. So I bought 7 Corydoras, 10 Neon tetras, and introduced my Betta who had never been with any fish. It's day 3 now and all is well. The Betta is quite shy but is not skittish with the other fish. He is finding his way around the tank with a lot of rocks, and plants. The Corydoras seem to make him feel comfortable to come out and eat. I do have a few leaves floating at the top for the Betta to rest and sleep..

  • @horsepanther
    @horsepanther 4 ปีที่แล้ว +57

I had good luck moving my betta into an aquarium where the other fish were there first, AND it's a big aquarium (40 gallons), and with a few plants to break things up. I had him with 6 neon tetras, 5 black neon tetras, 5 glowlight tetras, 3 platies, and 1 mystery snail. The betta LOVED swimming in every square inch of that tank. He never bothered anyone. But the platies started breeding like rabbits, and they were kind of hyper (males chasing females around), and the betta started seeming very stressed/wanting to hide. So I ended up taking him out. But he didn't cause any problems. And by the way, don't listen to people who tell you bettas "prefer" to live in a tiny bowl. Try putting your betta in a bigger tank and watch how much he loves being able to swim all over!

I’m sorry to say, but I think your tank is over stocked. Usually a school of neon tetras need at least 25-30 gallons long. Especially with the Betta, and the harlequin rasboras, this is just too small for them. It can be hard to notice, but tetras can get stressed out if they don’t have enough room. I hope you take this into consideration, but otherwise good luck with you tank :)

I have a male glofish betta in a planted Fluval Flex 15 with a mystery snail and two Endler livebearers. I added the betta two days ago. I picked this betta because he was active, but not flaring at other bettas when I put their containers together. What I have observed so far - the betta once tried to nip at one of the snail's tentacles, but the snail pulled it back in time and there hasn't been a confrontation since. He does chase the Endlers from time to time, but they are too fast for him and they don't even seem to be afraid of him, as they will swim quite close to him. I really hope he doesn't hurt the Endlers. They are always active, play with each other and swim everywhere. Such a pleasure to watch.

Had a 29 gallon with platys, 4 cherry barbs, and a veil tail male. The betta used to eat the barb eggs, while they got in on in the plants. He also eventually started swimming with the platys, like he was one. He outlived them all (they were hand-me-down fish), and lived to about 4 years old.

Bettas have such different personalities. I have a half moon that's crazy, crazy aggressive and I have it in a 45 breeder with a female convict and a juvenile firemouth. The Betta pushes around the firemouth BIG TIME but leaves the convict alone because it's so much bigger. I wouldn't put my other Betta in the same tank because it would get killed but this half moon can look after itself. The personality of the individual fish vary so much that you really have to take that into consideration.

Before the internet, I had a 29 gallon aquarium, not really planted and I am totally surprised I didn't have any trouble with tank mates. I had a male betta, 2 blue gouramis (4 inches each) a dwarf gourami, 2 marble angels, a couple of cory catfish, and a black, red finned shark, and a few cardinal/black tetras. I must have been EXTREMELY lucky since none of them attacked or harassed each other. I had them for years, so should have bet on the lottery since my luck seemed to be exceptional. Weird huh? Oh, I also had a breeding pair of marigold swordtails, but they were usually in a separate tank since they had fry so often. Love Aqua Coop videos and Cory, you explain things so well and they are easy to understand, not like many others. Two thumbs up!

I think it's important to keep bettas in at least a 5 gallon and give them tank mates (a few small fish) to chase, as it keeps bettas active and healthy. If kept on their own, they get bored easily and are not as active, and are more likely to succumb to various illnesses that stem from inactivity, such as constipation. I can say from having 10 years of betta keeping experience, that they usually live longer when they are kept with other fish and are able to fulfill their natural instinct to chase or 'hunt'

I have a moon shaped aquarium, 3.5 gallons. Seems to be more than enough space for the betta and so I'm considering tank mates. Given what you said, even if it kills off a fish or two, I think a school of 5 red tetras might not be a bad idea along with some snails

    • @jacksonbutler1828
      @jacksonbutler1828 ปีที่แล้ว +5

@@outdoorfr3ak No. Im sorry, but no. You shouldn't get tankmates for your betta that lives in a 3.5gal. The minimum for a betta is 5gal. Having the betta in a tank that small AND adding tankmates to it, youre just going to stress out your fish.
Please, a ten gallon tank is easy to get, and its less than 20 dollars, Petco is having a sale right now where in store the tank alone is around 13 dollars. You'll need to get some other supplies, but it is so worth it. You'll be able to get some really pretty fish to put in with your betta too.

My male betta is super laid back, and I think it helped that the cories were established in the tank before adding the betta so it wasn't as territorial. My betta actually seeks out the cories for entertainment, doesn't chase them or anything, just follows them from a distance until he gets bored :)

My betta is in a 10gal and he can be pretty aggressive but I wanted more movement in my tank so I have 5 zebra Danios, 2 Black kuhli loaches, 5 ghost shrimp, and 2 snails! They all get along great, it definitely makes my betta more interested in his surroundings. It seems like a lot for my size tank but everything is going well. Frequent water changes and plenty of food to go around. The danios actually eat a lot of the food before the betta gets to it which is great because this helps with his over eating problems. I’m hoping the shrimp will breed so I can put them into an other tank.

What I've discovered but haven't really seen anywhere is that, yes, your betta can be aggressive and attack the other fish; however, as with my betta, it can also become stressed and back off. My betta, Xiao Da Bian, is very timid (so timid that rather than flare up at his reflection he swims away) and having tank mates majorly stresses him out. He hides between the heater and the filter for the majority of the day and sleeps there too. When he's majorly stressed out he hides directly between the filter and the tank wall (the wall is curved so there's a pocket of space that he can easily get in and out of). He started eating less and would barely move around so eventually I moved his tank mates into a different tank. After that he was back to his usual activities.

  • @Chiikasaurus

My room mate had a 5gallon with a betta, three neon tetras and two cory cats. The betta left the corys alone 100% and they never bothered each other, but he would stalk and hunt the tetras all day long. One ended up dying, and another now has an issue with balance, likely from being rammed into. The betta was super aggressive. We had to say goodbye to the betta two nights ago because something caused his entire body to paralyze and he died. All of the other fish look very healthy, aside from the one tetra who sometimes struggles to right himself (It sort of comes and goes, but he has all of his color back and he eats and swims with his buddy just fine). And she now has a Golden Killifish in place of the betta.
Long story short, this betta did not like his neon tetra tank mates. Not one bit. But the corys worked out great.

You will find more success w rasboras in a 5 gallon w bettas bc the rasboras already naturally live in the wild w the betta, are smaller, and less active. Hengeli, lambchop, or neon green rasboras look awesome w bettas. Although I just edited and realized this isn't your tank lol.

20 gallon tall with 1 male delta tail betta, 12 harlequin rasboras, and 6 panda Corys. It did not work nearly as well when it was just the betta and the panda Corys. Betta stalked them and was very semi-aggressive in behavior but that made me opt for the harlequin rasbora over the Embers because they were bigger and less colorful and when they went in everything calmed down. I honestly was preparing to pull the betta at that same time if in fact he was going to make the rasboras stressed and vice-versa. But my tank is solid now and there's enough safety in numbers for the harlequins and pandas to exhibit normal behaviors and enough activity in the tank that while my delta is still the tank boss, he can't panther hunt any one fish in the tank. This was the video that introduced me to Cory and ACO and so I wanted to come back and say thanks for all the great info to help me get back into the hobby.

Platinum red dragon plakat male went in a week or two later, did just fine. He was so peaceful I tried adding shrimp for cleanup.... and he went wild. Even the rasboras were targets for the first day. Meanwhile the betta I knew would be a terror is happily building bubble nests in his tank and ignoring the snails.

I started with my Betta in a small DIY tank out of an old display I snagged from work, which was roughly 2 gallons without hardscape. Since then, I've pulled my old 29g out of storage and he's now living happily with way too many fish! I have at least 20 Zebra danios (my LFS was selling the fry as feeders so I bought ~10$ worth and they've since grown out), 5 dwarf neon rainbows, 5 feather-fin rainbows, 5 khuli loaches, 5 bronze cories, 3 SAEs, a trio of young sailfin mollies, a lone white skirt tetra, and there were some cherry shrimp in there ar one point but I have only seen one lately.
He did harass the young zebras and the young mollies because they were so small, but he lost his interest once he realized how fast they were. So far, everything has been going great and its a beautiful community to watch with the lone bright red and blue sheriff patroling the tank.

I love, love, love kuhli loaches and other serpentine typed fish. But after doing my own research I'm really confused why you would recommend them for a five gallon space. Pangio Kuhlii not only get to 4 inches long as adults, but are also school/shoal fish that prefer the company of several of their own kind like neons, rasboras and tetras do. If you put the recommended minimum of 6 Kuhlii necessary for a stable, gregarious school in a five gallon you're going to have overstocking issues which requires a lot more filtration (plants, bio-media, water changes) and fish math (hides, surface area, etc) to keep the chemistry/behavior stable in the tank. You're more likely to want 15-20 gallons MINIMUM for this species with ample hides, plants and soft (sand) substrate for them to feel most at home.

I saw him nip at one when I first put guppies in but the put the betta into a breeder box for a couple days to let them adjust. Since they’ve been fine. The guppies help to clean up the food the betta doesn’t eat. I should note the betta is an older rosetail and mostly just lays on the plants all day as he has issues turning quickly or really doing anything quickly.

She killed overnight his only 3 egg carrying ghost shrimps & 6 neon tetras, the solution? I quarantined her in the cup she came with when we purchased her and placed it right next to the 20H fish tank for a couple weeks where she watched the others swim by and after giving her another chance now she's as sweet as she can be, doesn't bother the tetras, lonely shrimp and snail, she just swims gracefully past them or observes them and be busy exploring the tank, maybe she learned what would be the consequence if she did attacked again, we plan on adding a few more shrimps and fish companions with more hiding plants and see how that goes with her (finger crossed)

I have a very HEAVILY planted/scaped & well established 10 gal. community tank. Inhabitants include more than 12 diff fresh water plants, one galaxy koi Betta, 8 White Cloud Mountain minnows, 4 hearty Julii Cories, 6 Amano shrimp, 1 tiger nerite snail, 1 ivory mystery snail + I’ve had pond and Malaysian trumpets hitch a ride in on plants as well. It’s one of three Betta community tanks I’m currently running & definitely my favorite. In my kitchen-5 gal scape, I have 9+ types of plants, one royal blue veil tail Betta, one black racer nerite snail, 4 Amano shrimp, one Kuhli loach and 5 gold White Cloud Mountain minnows. Lastly, I have a 5 gal with a blue marble half moon plakat Betta, 2 Amano and one zebra nerite snail. All inhabitants in all three tanks have coexisted harmoniously for extended periods of time. I have never truly experimented with any tank mates that weren’t researched or vetted & considered to be “safe” choices by reputable hobbyists. However, the individual Betta’s temperament MUST be considered prior to putting in a community. I also worked really hard to create the ideal environments to accommodate each animal’s preferences. I’m proud to say, I have some pretty well working little ecosystems. It’s important and comforting that I have contingencies for re-homing livestock, if ever the need arose. My husband has a fish room in our basement...also runs communities, a pea puffer tank, guppies, a nursery and a quarantine.

I sure discovered this at an opportune time. I put a few harlequin rasbora in with my betta yesterday, he chased them for about 10-15 minutes, then he realized that he's a fast betta, but the tiny torpedos are faster. They're settling in nicely, he's stopped lunging and they'll swim within 1/2" already. I need more for a proper school, but it's fine for now. They're in a 10 gal and my plan is 7-9 rasbora, 4 nerite snails, 3 ghost shrimp, and the star of the show. I hope he doesn't eat the maids (the shrimp especially), that would be unfortunate.

I have a temporary 10 gallon housing one angelfish moving out when bigger, one crowntail betta, a tiny Electric Blue Jack Dempsey who will be moved when he is a little bigger and 2 blackskirt Tetras
Tank has been awesome minimal aggression. This betta is thriving and colored up nicely

Nightshade (black/blue vt m) lives happily with Tusk (mystery snail) and three glo tetras (Misletoe(Moonrise Pink), Parsnip(Sunburst Orange), and Wolfsbane (Cosmic Blue)). He does corral the tetras when they start fighting like children but he NEVER bites anyone. I went from a 1g bowl with Nightshade and Tusk, to a 5g tank with Tetras. Nightshade takes the top and back, Parsnip tends to be in the mid-center level, Wolfsbane and Mistletoe tend to switch mid-left and mid-right. Tusk just goes where he pleases (Nightshade does play peekaboo with him. Its cute). I will admit I had no idea that the tetras were considered nippers, but like I said, they tend to stay in their spots unless they are getting scolded. Then they go into one of the corners for a few minutes under the watchful eye of Nightshade.
Is the compatibility like this because I only got three? Or did I just luck out with the perfect tempermented Betta and combination of random Glo's? I don't know, and I don't care, because I love all five of them!

Ive heard koi bettas are more aggressive. I have a female who chases tetras. It is now on its own. Have a baby pleco that was born in another tank and didn't want to risk it with the betta. Also she beat up a male betta instead of breeding. Is that true about koi bettas?

Jerome Perner My male koi was very sweet and would swim away from his reflection 😂. On the other hand, my 2 female koi bettas in my sorority are the alpha and #2. That being said, I don’t think I have enough evidence to make a solid conclusion LOL

Koi are typically a plakat form, which tend to be a bit more high strung. My koi female is super active for a betta but very peaceful, as she lives with tetras and a pleco among other fish without even a flare.

In my 29 gallon I've kept my betta with around 12 Glo Lite tetras with no issues at all, and a tiger nerite snail. There is also an older longfin blue danio who just won't die in there too. The betta has several places to hide and be by himself when he wants to. This betta will flair at his own reflection sometimes but never at the glo lites. I've had no issues with Nerites in any of my tanks. That same betta was in with some juvenile mollies that I had to grow out (never again!) but I found the mollies started nipping his fins as they got older. I've tried keeping a betta in my 10 gallon with amano shrimp and I'm pretty sure all the amano shrimp jumped out. I never saw the betta go after them but I did find an amano on the floor several times and... my cats love seafood. I've kept a betta in with guppies in a 20 gallon, that went well. He wasn't a very aggressive betta.

My opinion is that you have to make your own experience with things. While Google says that two fish don't come together nicely it must not be true for you. I'm not saying to put 2 bettas together but you get what I'm saying😉

I have pond snails and an apple snail. There are no problems but a bit of hilarious reactions sometimes. Like the day I thought my betta was dead. He was floating in his tank near the bottom, facing the floor with his tail going straight up towards the surface. Not even a fin twitch. I tapped the tank, my signal that there was food. Nothing. I tapped harder, and stirred up the water. His eye moved to look at me then straight back down.I rushed off to get my glasses. He was watching the teenyest tiny baby pond snail I have ever seen. Nothing broke his concentration for a very long time.He is very fond of his snails and dose them no harm at all.

My betta tried to eat my ADF’s 😂 Didn’t work out for him. Also, I need to express how angry I was just now because I was just at a Petco, and I found a BEAUTIFUL betta that was black and blue, and as I was running to show my mom (we were about to buy it) Someone took it and bought it. I let that one slip right out of my fingertips just like that 😢😭😡

    With my Bettas I have
    Tank 1 (30gal): 10 x Head and tail tetra, 10 x neon tetra, 10 x glowstick tetra, ? guppies, ? ghost shrimp, 2 x fluorescent danios, 2 x saimese algae eater and 2 x 5 different type of Cory Dora
    Tank 2 (15Gal): 10 x Glass bloodfin tetra, 5 x flame tetra, 2 x guppies, 1 x hillstream loach, 1 x kuhli loach, ? ghost shrimp and 2 panda Cories
These tanks have been going for 9 months now with nothing new introduced besides what ever has been born in there (guppies and shrimp). I also have tons of snails :/ I dont know if the bio load is too much for the tanks but they are heavily planted and everyone seems like they are thriving.

10 gal with male betta, 4 guppies, 1 nerite and 1 mystery snail. We used to have a dojo loach but he was nipped at guppies so we got rid of him. Guy at pet store said at 3 inches loach was full grown. After doing research we learned dojo loach was way to big for our 10 gal and they grow very large.
