  • You all probably remember the girlboss phenomenon of the last decade. Neoliberal individualism infested the west's once-emancipatory feminist theory and praxis and turned it into a hollow, performative act by upper class white women. What's the deal? Let's talk a bit about neoliberal "girlboss" feminism.

Expecting a man to understand and being helpful is futile. I recommend to learn feminist history. It clearly shows how women can get their rights only when they fight for them themselves, and they are normal people, not some perfect angels. This video not only steals feminist ideas, summarizing and misconstruing them without telling whom they belong (the critique of "girlboss" concept is feminist, the "reproductive work" is from feminist theory, and so on) but in addition it tries to put a wedge between different women groups which is a famous Machiavellian trick "divide and conquer". What ever bad were girlbosses they were not worse than men, and should not be compared against some nonexistent ideal.

So people doing reproductive work have to also do paid work in order to pay for the care of their families. The result is burnout and exhaustion. So either we need to raise wages or indeed let the taxpayer pay for it in the form of free childcare or family benefits. It's different from household chores (which btw also often fall on the shoulders of the one doing reproductive work) because those aren't a full time job.

I feel fortunate to have 2 myself, and probably would have opted for more but we struggled enough to make ends meet with the 2 I am grateful are happy, health kids- not enough space, not enough time, not enough resources. In this dimension, capitalism has accelerated it's own demise and catalyzed a shift to 'something else' (and what that will be, I don't know but 100% it can't be what we have now) via the inevitable, grinding, banal force of demographics. Simply put- you can't have a consumer based economy with no consumers and a bunch of retirees.
The demographic bomb set off by neoliberal economics (making the simple act of procreation economically nonviable for the rational masses) will reverberate for decades, if not centuries. You see the mad knee-jerk of China (which is a worst case scenario of self-inflicted demographic damage to be fair, but they would have gotten to this point eventually regardless) now that the powers that be realize what is coming given their population has stopped growing. They will not be able to reverse the trend for the same reasons as every other country that has gotten to that point before them, and thus far failed to lift fertility rates.
So I know with great certainty capitalism's days are numbered, but I also doubt I'll be alive to see it well and truly 'fall'.

    • @grumpyoldman6503
      @grumpyoldman6503 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@Zaydan Alfariz I agree that everyone that wants a child should be able to have one. The very problem is... people are more and more *opting* NOT to... the reasons (IMO) are -
      1. Because that is an option now for women (access to contraception, to say nothing of other family planning options)
      2. Education and "liberation" with respect to workforce participation for women- simply put women can support themselves similar to men and delay children
      3. The costs in time and energy relative to raising a child, particularly with respect to #2 (and which is the tension embedded in this video- that somehow you can magically "have it all" and that is the height of "feminist" achievement)
#3 can be mitigated, but the track record here for all governments that have tried to lift their fertility rate in a capitalistic social structure via just plugging the economic "hole" has been largely unsuccessful and is undermined by #1 and #2 regardless.
So unless the world goes full authoritarian Hand Maid's Tale... like I said, demographics will force a change in the world economic order within a couple of generations (climate change will also give it a push over the edge).

Women being oppressed is no excuse for upper-class women to oppress women of color and the working class, you as an upper-middle-class woman need to check and understand your own privilege. Understanding that some women will face unique difficulties that other more privileged women do is not a divide-and-conquer strategy but is just something called intersectional feminism something Angela Davis writes about and advocates for. In her books, she talks about the experience of being a black woman compared to white women because white women are more privileged. This idea that all women share the same exact issues is classic white feminism. Reproductive work is a Marxist feminist concept and so is the critique of the girlboss. Do not forget Angela Davis is a communist and applied those Marxist concepts in her works.

This is the exact thing that capitalists do they delude you into thinking that they are more inclusive by saying look we have women in the billionaire class while ignoring those women can be as evil as men with their treatment of workers, they say this while massive industries lobby against things that would benefit working-class women like paid maternity leave, who make up the majority of women.

I've been writing a book on these issues for the last several years, as well as some issues like androsexism, right wing women, etc. And I'm so glad to see other people talking about it, because feminism as a movement has been severely reduced to a neoliberal, individualistic, defanged set of "personal" opinions (being fragmented into "well, MY feminism is blah blah blah") co-opted by a handful of sociopolitical and cultural forces rather than a collective radical movement it once was, as well as one that was finally starting to address issues faced by not just white elitist women before it basically died (and my book is about how it died but also how it can be revived again as an intersectional collective movement again)...
I'm also glad to see if I get to finish the book (which has been difficult as a single disabled mom of two young babies, lol) that there will be at least some interest in the subject, which lately it's seemed like there may not be lately, tbh. Thank you as always for the phenomenal content you produce, but also for the unexpected extra source of motivation to finish my next draft of it!

I’d love to compare and trade sources with you. I’ve been working on a book in this realm for a bit too, mostly about the history of class exploitation and debunking the “we only get paid so little because women work now” argument that I heard too often from men in university.
My thesis is essentially that women have always worked (inside and outside the home) but not always as paid employees, that men of specific classes have always been underpaid and exploited by the ruling class, that women *formally* joining the workforce didn’t demote mens pay, and that the ruling class/corporations have only supported feminist movements up to the point that it provided them with more bodies to exploit.
My background is actually in psych and specialized in trauma and attachment theory so I’m making connections between the traumas of the World Wars, how they were(n’t) handled, and how that has contributed to our current economic structure and family-work culture.
I’m planning a wedding this year so I’ve really slowed down on my research but seeing more people passionate about this general area of study regarding feminism and class/the workforce™ has me hopeful and excited to get back into it again. I would definitely read your book 📕

@BunniOfSocks That sounds AWESOME! And I would love to help however I can! Heads up, this is probably gonna be long as heck because I'm super passionate about it, lol. It might get ranty. But I'll list some sources to other reads at the end and think about some to give as I go along...
My background is primarily in sociology and women's studies, with most of my sociological research background being related to the sex industry and homelessness, both of which I also have personal experience with that led to my academic and professional work on both (I've taken a small break from my book lately as well to focus on some family issues and other activist stuff I've been working on - I'm starting a TH-cam channel on another account around issues involving the nonprofit industrial complex, so I can relate on taking a break from writing, lol).
I think that's also so awesome you have a psych background. I've always felt there's not enough people in the field of psychology looking at macro-level issues and not being hyper focused on solely the micro-level, and I'm really interested in attachment issues and other related topics you mentioned, too. (For a lot of reasons, but I also consume a lot of work from Gabor Maté and some others in my spare time too, as well as his son Aaron for other completely different issues, lol.)
That's pretty spot on with summing it up. Women have always worked, but the kinds of work they've done have been undervalued and/or unpaid for the majority of the type of work they've performed. But men have always been the ones to define what is even considered to be "work" in colonized capitalist societies, regardless of the innate value it provides all of society, and those same imperialist men have always relegated labor into two separate categories: private (domestic, hidden, etc.) and public (government, corporations, etc.), of which dichotomies of "either/or" categorizations also are emblematic of white supremacy and other forms of oppression by their nature. Even the laws in a society that are based on issues irrelevant to labor are built on the principle that the private is less worthy of attention, recognition, consideration, etc. while the public is what is given priority, ignoring the fact that they so blatantly coexist together and the separation is arbitrary at best, but it's still nonetheless a force that pushes oppressed groups even farther into the margins of society at its worst, in ways that can be lethal yet also completely invisible. We've seen this for thousands of years where anything that is deemed "private" is largely unacknowledged, such as rape, domestic violence, child abuse, hunger, elder care, abortions, and other issues that have through most of history, until the second wave feminist movement, seen as "private matters", only to be dealt with "in the home", and so on. It's why for centuries there weren't any laws around things that disproportionately kill/ed or caused trauma to women and children in our society, and why we still don't see as much progress as we should care to expect (for example, like how our government consistently fails to find millions of missing women and children, among other similar problems where the most attention they'll receive tends to be on local news channels for a few minutes or turned into true crime media glorifications of misogyny, white supremacy, colonization, etc.). That's the whole reason that the second wave feminist mantra "The personal is political!" was devised: to illustrate that all of these problems exist for very political reasons and within a macro-level societal context, and that anything that's deemed "personal"/"private" is very much still a political issue, despite it being unrecognized as such by and large. Whether it's food, childcare, transportation, or what have you - if it's anything that anyone is dealing with as a personal problem, it ALWAYS has a political context.
But in terms of said private labor, women have always been the ones invisibly producing trillions of dollars worth of labor and services to economies completely and/or predominantly without pay, and our society's social construction of gender is a major way that this is even possible still today. For example, the ways women are socialized from the time they're born to being more nurturing, soft-spoken, taking up less space, more considerate, etc. and the toys they're groomed into the roles for like with dolls, cooking sets, makeup, etc. and everything else similar up through adulthood where it's made clear that women are deemed responsible for the unpaid labor of childrearing, elder care, etc. and all the domestic labor that ends up being "the double/second shift" (the feminist term describing the second but unpaid job women perform for their families when they come home that is still to this day disproportionately skewed compared to men's contributions) on top of their own jobs they're forced to have today when men haven't had that additional burden added to their own paid labor performed. And although a great deal of these socialized traits and characteristics are often mistaken for essentialist beliefs of what women and men are "naturally", we have enough scientific evidence that shows us otherwise. (Cordelia Fine, Mari Ruti, and Angela Saini are just a few examples of modern feminists debunking a lot of faulty "science" on mythical gender differences with hormones, chromosomes, neurology, and a lot of other topics that are full of misconceptions, ones of which that have historically been used to subjugate women and are still used to justify misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia.) And issues like this signal a lot of the underlying reasons for why there's so much fear around trans rights and rights for gender fluidity, neutrality, etc. Because it threatens the role that cishet women are prescribed in our society and threatens capitalism itself, and the economic repercussions would be severe in the eyes of capitalists. (Plus, if more women realized they weren't obligated to fulfill these roles, it would be catastrophic for several different industries that depend on these patriarchal values to be upheld, and a lot of people in society that depend on women to do these roles for free, without any assistance from the government, and so on would suffer. In 1975, there was actually a feminist demonstration of the value of women's labor where about 90% of the women went on strike for one day, where for a single day they didn't do cooking, cleaning, childcare, etc. And the whole country recalls it as "a dark day in history", but their value was at least recognized as a result. Restaurants were packed but understaffed, too many people called off work to stay home with their kids so businesses suffered, and so on and so forth. But I can't imagine American women uniting to do that, lol. I remember back during the lockdown reading a NY Times article about how the value of women's unpaid labor in America is like, $10 trillion or some insane number I can't remember exactly, but the comments were just full of pushback, mostly men I saw being like, "Well, I work, too! I work harder so I deserve more money, and my wife loves working in the home for free!" as well as androsexist women stuff and so many just completely missing the point... Maybe they didn't read it, lol.)
And as far as women being unpaid for labor, there's somewhat of a few historical and cross-cultural exceptions, like sex work (I had a whole thing here on this to elaborate, but I cut it out because I think the comment was too long to post, lol)
And of course that's been a historical exception for white women, too, though they tend to have always been poor white women. I'm personally multiracial - Native American, Black, and White - and Appalachian, and the stories I grew up with of my Native and Black female ancestors made it clear to me pretty early in life that women have indeed always worked, even when men like the ones you spoke of claim otherwise, lol. Even some of my white women ancestors who grew up poor worked, too, usually as farmers or other rural occupations (plus, there's always historically been more white women working as teachers or nurses for hundreds of years, too). With the Native stories I'd hear growing up, my great grandmother used to tell me about how "unega" (white people) were so scared of the women in our nation because they'd have the same level of political power in the tribe's decisions, among other equal roles in all other aspects if they chose and vice versa for the men (of course, there were thousands of Native nations, and some of them were very flexible like this, others were pretty rigid with gender roles, and there's a whole spectrum that varies wildly), and when the white men would try to join them in meetings, they'd ask the women to leave because they were so afraid of them, lol. But there was also more gender fluidity allowed in a lot of Native nations too, and it was largely white *women* who felt so uncomfortable with how "undomesticated" they were that they were the ones to pressure them to conform and assimilate to white womanhood. And of course, we know Black women weren't exempt from brutal slave labor and treatment for being women, and they've been disproportionately working in lower paid jobs for the most part ever since.

@@BunsBooks (Sorry... I know I'm long-winded and working on it, so please don't hate me, lmao. I had to split it up for length...)
You're right on point with the labor issues, though. Unpaid and undervalued domestic (or "hidden") labor is one of my favorite subjects to talk about in terms of intersectional feminist issues. It always has been, but it's pretty relevant to my personal life these days, too. (Long story short, my ex husband I'm still divorcing was/is abusive, and we separated last year. I have a 1 year old and a 4 year old that I devote 16+ hours of unpaid labor to raising, grooming, homeschooling, feeding, clothing, etc., but because I have several disabilities and yet can't be eligible for disability somehow lol, my options for having a stable income are extremely limited. I can't even perform most WFH jobs because I can't do anything over the phone with babies screaming over me and getting me fired lol, and I have no social support to have any consistent work hours with, and definitely can't afford daycare even if I wanted to go that route with how attached my youngest still is to me. At every turn I'm constantly pressured to find work to put them in daycare though, which even the 4 year old is too young for preschool being born two days after the cutoff date, even though putting them in daycare would mean I'd have to work at least two or three jobs just to break even financially, only to pay strangers to perform the same unpaid labor that I do myself. But for some reason, society wants parents to work like dogs to pay a second mortgage's worth for strangers to only put in a fraction of the work of raising their kids for them, when daycare workers are also underpaid and yet don't do most of the remaining domestic labor that has to inevitably be done. Like grocery shopping, doctor appointments, other errands, etc. Not to mention, kids in daycare get sick so often that parents often even lose their jobs trying to pull it off when they have to miss work so much because of it, especially since COVID still isn't over, and for what? To miss out on your kids growing up, lack any form of attachment to them and cause them and yourselves emotional trauma, and to go back to work when your body usually isn't physically ready postpartum? All to sacrifice for a job you most likely despise or at least resent as a result? Or if you do enjoy it, you have to choose between sacrificing all the time with your family or your career with no compromise? So yeah... I'm able to make ends meet for us, and this last year has been rough, but I'd do it all over again in a heartbeat if it means I can form a good bond with my kids and give them the best start possible in life in terms of parental love and the education I try to give them, and we have enough to get by thankfully. I figure I can do what we need to get by at least until they're older, and I can be content with staying up late every night to do a few things I'm passionate about by carving out a couple hours after they're asleep. But it's crazy that this is the "choice" families get: work endlessly to only work and never see your family and for it to only end when you die, or choose destitute poverty and still probably die early from the oftentimes literally crippling stress and the lack of basic means to survive.)
Anyway. I didn't mean to make that all about me, I promise, lol. Just wanted to vouch for the fact that I do totally get it on a personal level too, but more importantly that I'm definitely not the only one in this situation (I know what it was like too when still with my ex husband and when we couldn't BOTH work and afford daycare AND didn't qualify for public assistance because we earned barely too much, which so many families are in that spot, too). There's very few sources of information, news, etc. that I hear cover these topics, especially from a Marxist or socialist or otherwise anti-capitalist perspective, and consistently. But I'll list a couple below for that, too.
I wholeheartedly support your work though, and I bet once you finish it that a lot of people will benefit from it. As far as a few other sources go, here's a few right off the top of my head that are on the subject of women's labor, particularly from Marxist and/or socialist perspectives for the most part:
      - Alice Kessler-Harris, "Women Have Always Worked: A Historical Overview" from the 80s, I believe, but if you haven't come across that one yet it's a good start
      - Angela Davis, honestly any of her stuff is amazing, but especially "Women, Race, and Class" for this topic
      - Marlene Dixon, a radical socialist feminist whose work still sounds like it was written yesterday, which there's audiobook videos you can find on TH-cam for her stuff, too
      - For anything sex industry related, I'd recommend Gail Dines, Andrea Dworkin, Robert Jensen, and Catharine A. MacKinnon to name a few. Also my mentor, Dr. Bernadette Barton, with whom I helped with writing and research for a few of her books.
      - There's an article called "The Buffer Zone" by Paul Kivel, and I think it's a really crucial topic to explore with anything to do with women's labor, particularly "trenchwork" direct services type of work that's largely feminized (like I mentioned with nursing, teaching, social work, etc.), but there's so much more to explore with it that I think you'd appreciate too possibly, and you can find the PDF free if you search for it.
      - Also so many things written by bell hooks. Literally anything by hooks is a masterpiece, but she's got some wonderful work on this subject, too.
      - Kimberle Crenshaw, the feminist who counted the term "intersectionality", definitely has a lot of work she has on this topic, too.
      - "Hood Feminism" is a great read too, and it's probably the newest on this list since it was just published a few years ago, but Mikki Kendall digs into a lot of contemporary intersectional issues and their histories from an anti-capitalist perspective on issues like cultural childcare expectations, food stamps and other public assistance, housing issues, and other stuff from a feminist lens that often aren't seen as feminist issues, and she ties a lot of it into labor, as well.
      - One work that I think gets severely underappreciated is "The Dialectic of Sex: The Case for Feminist Revolution" by Shulamith Firestone. It's been years since I've read it, and I think there may be some myths in it purely from a white feminist perspective though I can't remember for sure, possibly some trans issues in it too since it's from the second wave and that was common whether intentionally or inadvertently, but in it she definitely made a lot of predictions about the future of capitalism, women's labor, technological advances intersecting with fertility medicine and how women would be hypothetically freed from capitalist patriarchal oppression given certain technological developments, and other things that make it seem still extremely relevant and at the very least super interesting to read. And if you talk about anything with essentialism like I mentioned before, this might be a valuable addition to the list. (Especially since some of her predictions that were thought to be crazy are turning out to be actual technological advances we've made or are in the process of now, lol.)
      - Interestingly enough, I know most of these sources are focused on WOC and poor/working class women, but an interesting book that blew my mind about wealthy elite women's work that I read several years ago is "The Power of Good Deeds" by Dianne Kendall. It's about the value of unpaid (or at least not directly paid, and still labor that men relegate to women) labor and philanthropic work that women do that ultimately makes rich white families even wealthier and is basically a form of domestic labor performed primarily by women that benefits wealthy families. It's absolutely infuriating and fascinating at the same time lol, because there were so many things that most people who aren't ultra wealthy might not even be aware of that are talked about at length in it (like I legit didn't know that rich people have balls and other customs to try to set up their heir and heiress children together and strategize doing so with company mergers and other stuff talked about in it... Blew my mind at the time.) And with the work I do on the NPIC, I can attest that I've found a lot of research since then suggesting this has been a historical trend for white rich women for a long time with charity and philanthropy and such.
      - This one's actually a series from Democracy at Work, but Dr. Harriett Fraad has TH-cam/podcast content that I HIGHLY recommend for radical intersectional feminist and socialist issues and current events. She's one of my favorite people I follow on TH-cam, and her husband Dr. Richard Wolff too is another I can't listen to enough, but she has a series called "Capitalism Hits Home" that I listen to religiously that might be relevant to your work, too.
I know there's others I'm trying to think of... And if I do remember some others I'll be sure to come back and comment again. But is there anything regarding any specific other topics you'd be interested in with this that I could help with? I sincerely hope that any shred of this comment has been remotely helpful, assuming TH-cam even lets me post the whole damn thing, lmao (... nope, definitely had to cut some out, even across two comments, lol). But regardless, I'm stoked to hear about your book idea and wish you the best of luck with it!! I'll be keeping an eye out for it too, for sure!

It's not conceived at all, though. Capitalism is there by nature. Having an advantage of any kind can be used to develop other advantages, which in turn opens the way to even more advantages, creating ever increasing power. This principle is even already present in gravity: mass accumulates. There are also other forces, of course, but capitalism is no human invention. It is something which can have benefits and can cause huge damage, like fire. It has to be handled the right way. Trying to fundamentally abolish it is futile, impossible. It is as if the fire department would attempt to eliminate the existence of fire itself. Everything can be capital. We must look for effective methods to harness it in a socially acceptable way.

I know it's not talked about a lot--but neoliberal feminism also reinforces a lot of ableism by encouraging overworking, and certain jobs that can be extremely difficult for neurodiverse, chronically ill, and/or disabled women to achieve. Especially if they have to deal with other forms of oppression such as racism and/or queerphobia.
Like, being the head of a job where you have to deal with more sensory input to get to and from work along with during the day (such as the lights in an office, loud noises, smells, etc.) would be an extremely hard job for women, and all people, with sensory issues and differences that often include sensory issues such as autism and ADHD.
Or a job that requires a lot of phone calls and digital meetings is gonna be a lot harder for neurodiverse people.
Jobs that require travel are a lot harder for disabled and/or chronically ill women, and all people, especially with TSA constantly breaking assistance tools like canes and wheelchairs and constant questioning and searching about medications. (Which chronically ill people tend to NEED a lot of to be able to not be in pain all the time--tho of course varies on the condition and individual.)
Just...so many things. Capitalism is ableist by nature, so of course this is baked into neoliberal feminism, but it still just boils my blood.

This probably doesn't go for some situations but I am wondering how work pressure has been changing in the last, say, fifty years. Which I imagine should include whether purchasing power has increased, decreased or remained roughly the same for individuals, couples and families and worker's rights (like protection from being fired without a valid reason) and certain expectations like overtime that even if the employee may have the right to say no to, they may fear the consequences of.
      Sorry, rambling.

I'm beginning to wonder if innovation happens because there's a need to fill, not necessarily because there was a capitalistic impetus driving it. Competition does spur innovative ideas because any restrictive environment breeds creativity around those restrictions, but from my point of view, competition also encourages secrecy, selfishness, and discourages cooperative endeavors. I think people miss the point why not many women were in higher positions in economy in the first place.
Its because most women were just not raised to be a heartless, egoistic and confrontative asshole hungry for nothing but their own financial success, which is what helps you to climb the ladder in many companies.
More women in high position do not necessarily mean capitalism gets one bit more humane, it often just means it got acceptable for some women to behave like some men were raised to do.
In return you cant really expect those women getting into those positions by the toxic and egotistical manners, to help the general success of other women within the society. Instead of changing the problems it comes down to the advice of just changing yourself towards becoming part of it and selling your goal of equality for a bit of individual financial success, but cementing the unjust system.
The priorities need to change entirely for anything getting better.

Agreed. Every single oppressed minority whether it is women, BIPOC communities, disabled folks, or the LGBTQ community, and every intersectionality under the sun cannot have real emancipation under capitalism.
The neoliberal understanding of what constitutes equality is not equality at all. It's just taking a small number of individuals of oppressed minorities, placing them in positions of power in the capitalist system, and telling them to behave like the white male capitalists have always behaved all while leaving the rest of them impoverished and continually under the boot. It's like watching black cops murder black workers.

Expecting a man to understand and being helpful is futile. I recommend to learn feminist history. It clearly shows how women can get their rights only when they fight for them themselves.

@@maiiabakhova2474 ok, we get it - you don't accept the criticism because it is a guy doing it.

@@Jamhael1 This is an obvious projection. You do not accept critique because a woman does it, and you cannot even understand what I said.

The episode we never knew we wanted, but know now that we needed.
(I laughed so hard hearing S.T. saying "Girlboss" over and over again!)
Another great video! So glad people like ST are here to give us HQ theory in an interesting and humorous way.

Women want to be treated like men but after they get treated as man they complain they want to be important to society and here are some jobs that have 90% or men that are important to society. Miner, plumber, electrician and etc and feminists know that feminism is for an advantage.

Thank you for touching on this, I definitely have felt this way but people just sweep it under the rug.
